Media Create Sales: Week 48, 2012 (Nov 26 - Dec 02)

Again - to put that "30 people at yodobashi" queue into a little context ...

here's the Vita queue at the same location (we had to queue over from the main enterance)

The queue looped all the way round too. 300+ or so, perhaps Johntv can remember as i think he was counting.

Wow, all Vita owners together!

Went to 3 stores. Sold out at two of them.

In other words, you can get a Wii U in my town, but you might not be able to get it at the first place you look.

This is not like the Wii, PS2 or DS that were just gone from every store and you would be lucky to find one at all.

But it is also not like the PS3, 3DS, 360 or Vita that were never sold out anywhere in Japan.

Anecdotes are useless without numbers shipped, but so far it looks like it was not a bomba but also didn't set the world on fire.

As an anedoctal note, for what it's worth - since we haven't shipments/sell-through numbers, besides they launched in different periods - I have just done some research about launch weeks sales of said consoles(correct me if I'm wrong on any of these numbers):

PS3 84.000
3DS 374.000
Vita 325.000(it reached 380.000 the week after that, more than 1/3 of LTD sales)

OK, now this makes it seem worse than I thought it would be. Bamco wants 350k lifetime sales? I could only see that if they had gotten 250k+ first week. I'm hoping the drop in 2nd week won't be too big but I'm not expecting anything.

I think Banpresto is way over their heads with this attempt of pushing out the OG series as the main SRW title, the first 2d HD game. The OG series has its fanbase, but it's obviously smaller than the fanbase of the main games.

Although, really, I think there are problems with their strategy in general. Back during Alpha 3 SRW a hyped up "main" SRW could break half a million at least, but now none of the main games can do that and aren't even expected to. Maybe focusing on HD sprites rather than spending resources to make a game with good 3d animations was a mistake? All 3d SRWs have had pretty poor animations compared to the 2d games, but that's just Banpresto's own fault and not really an inherent limitation of 3d graphics.

And even i am moderately surprised

one SMBC analyst mentioned 3-400k for launch - but nothing official. I'd expect some numbers tuesday i'd have thought.

I seem to recall Vita had a lot of hype in Japan pre-release, which quickly fizzled out. The first week sales were pretty high, no?

Yes, it was pretty hyped before the launch, also thanks to a good launch line-up, which was really appealing the Japanese in general.

cant believe i was in japan at vita launch and didnt get one

retrospectively was a good decision though as i might get one way cheaper now.

What? No, it was the complete opposite.

Actually the opposite has always seemed to me a misconception.
Japan Vita's launch line-up had 26 games, and only 7 of them were Western titles.
It had Hot Shot Golf, Dynasty Warriors, Ridge Racer, Disgaea, Dream Club, Katamary, two fighting games, two promising Square Enix games (though one new IP, and the sequel of a not popular game)... It had a really good line-up for Japanese tastes, let alone the fact that some of them were spin-offs or porting (this always happens during launches). Furthermore, Uncharted is probably one of the most successful IP from a Western Sony studio in Japan lately.

Hmm true. If LvsP drops 80% then that puts it around 25k. And if AC holds steady from last week that puts it's upper bound around 100k (doubtful). So Nintendoland is in that range.

Unless Mario does like 200k or we have some amazing holds this week, software for the Wii U is not going to match the Wii's launch which had Wii Sports, Play,Zelda and Wario Ware.

Poor Mario could not even touch Yakuza 5, Japan must be tired of you.
ZombiU :(

Are they reliable?

Is this something different from the beta trial code included in the Premium bundle?

This is the Wii version of the game. Tsutaya stores (with assistance from Square Enix of course) are offering a "rental" of DQX, after which you pay something like 4,000 yen for a registration code for the full version if you decide to continue on. Not only do you get to play it for a bit for free up front, but the 4,000 yen is considerably cheaper than the price of the normal game.

Are they usually reliable?

They are reliable because they are a retailer that are showing a rank of games sold on their stores only.

They're not a sales tracker for the entire market. They're simply another Amazon and Comgnet ranking (just a bigger retailer, although I don't know if they sell more games than either).

i hope nintendoland failing to become the next wii sports means nintendo knocks that shit off in the future. bad enough they decided to make that and basically the same sort of game with game & wario right afterward.

"I wish Nintendo would stop making fun games because I don't like the genre they are."

Nintendo Land is a tougher sell than Wii Sports ever was and may not pull in the same numbers, but it doesn't mean it isn't fun. What is so bad about them making it as a launch title, as opposed to NSMBU or Wii Sports 3?

i think 8-4 or another podcast mentioned nintendo saying wii U would launch with less units than wii in NA and even less in japan. 200-300k seems more likely.
