Maturity, bitches.
We lament the sudden break in GuP's schedule part way through a tournament, but Saki Episode of Side A was even worse.

Asks questions so Ezalc doesn't have to
What is this magical place? Something seems different here. It's beautiful and serene. Have we made it too the promised land?

Haha, I loved how you guys ended the last OT.

2012 Best Cosplay(?)
That's what happened at the end of the last ot? I missed the chance to post the best sfw ficlet of fall 2012.

“What would you do if I died?” “…huh?” The question caught him off guard, not because it broke the silence, but because it was the last thing he’d expect to hear leaving Mahiro’s lips. It was quiet aside from the whisper of waves washing over the rocky shore, and Mahiro sat still as ever, cross-legged and gazing out at the once-blue sea now painted red by the sunset, the same shade of scarlet that colored his eyes. He was so very peaceful, it was hard to believe he was the one who’d voiced the question. It would’ve been easier to believe it was just the wind.

“What kind of question is that?” Yoshino murmured, glancing up at the blond from where he lay in the grass. “Answer it.”

“I…” “Would you have any regrets?” The brunette’s jade eyes fluttered shut as he mused over the question. A silence hung in the air, though it was different from the silence they’d shared before; Mahiro was waiting on an answer.

“Who can say?” Yoshino sighed at a length, before subtly cracking open one eye and throwing the question back at him. “What about you? Would you regret anything if I died?”

Unwavering, the blond’s gaze remained lost at sea. “Yeah.” You’re probably thinking about all the apologies you owe me, Yoshino whimsically thought to himself, letting his eye close again as a sea breeze swept over his lids. “In that case, you should use your chance while I’m still alive.”

“Shut up. I know that.” A silence fell over them again while Yoshino sunk back down into the grass, so serene he’d nearly drifted off to sleep. At least, until he felt something curiously soft brush over his lips, and the warmth of someone’s breath sweeping his cheek. But it was only when he felt the tickle of Mahiro’s silken hair framing his face that he suddenly realized… he was being kissed. His cheeks glowed pink, his eyes closed tighter, and the brunette could’ve sworn he’d forgotten how to breathe for only just a second. But he breathed a long needed sigh when the blond finally broke away, wondering if Mahiro could see his heart pounding as clearly as Yoshino felt it drumming in his chest.

“W-w-what was that?!” “My last regret.” To Yoshino’s horror, Mahiro placed a hand over his restless heart, clearly anticipating how flustered the brunette would be. And with his ever-teasing smile he muttered, “You’re free to die now.”

So with the new Gargantia PV, I was thinking about the mecha design a bit, and also about what Branduil was saying about the uncomfortable abundance of 3DCG mecha animation in newer shows. And then I thought about it some more, and I realized that as far as some of the specific shows we're talking about, there's actually some sort of connection which explains the more frequent use of CG in mechanical stuff, aside from the previously discussed factors.

Makoto Ishiwata seems to be a common factor in several of the more... notable (?) recent projects with mecha or complex "mechanical" designs - Fate/Zero, Robotics;Notes, Psycho-Pass, Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, and Valvrave the Liberator. He's a designer on all these shows, in various different capacities. On Fate/Zero he was one of the additional designers, probably responsible for some of the guns and vehicles. On Robotics;Notes, Gargantia, and Valvrave, he's the original or main mecha designer. For Psycho-Pass he designed the Dominator gun.

So who exactly is he? And how is it that his only previous involvement in anime before all this recent work, is being the mechanical designer for Blassreiter over 4 years ago? Well, for those familiar with these projects, the connection should be rather obvious - Nitro-Plus. Aside from Valvrave, every single one of those projects including Blassreiter are Nitro-Plus projects, either by involvement of Urobuchi, or an adaptation of an existing Nitro-Plus work.

Ishiwata has a design studio called Polygon Bangcho, which specializes in design and CG work. His main client is Nitro-Plus, and he has been involved in many of their game projects over the years. As Nitro-Plus got more popular outside of the Visual Novel industry, it seems Ishiwata did as well. He now has much more designer cred, and he's even able to land a major new Sunrise project without Nitro-Plus' involvement. It's pretty interesting to see how a relatively obscure designer who previously didn't even work in the anime industry managed to get successful by association with the company he works with.

It's of course not surprising that his designs lend themselves naturally to CG given the sort of design background he has. So in these cases, it might not be so much that the studios are unable to find mechanical animators for these projects, but rather the designs themselves helped determine the form of mechanical animation for the shows.

It would also explain why people who dislike one of the designs in these shows tend to have a negative opinion of all the designs in the other shows, since it's the same guy doing them.

Not to be "that guy", but isn't calling the Winter thread OT4 sorta...cheating? Whatevs, I don't give a fuck.

Less posts in OT3 than OT2. Gotta step my game up.

Wow, if you tell me this is written by Gen Urobuchi I wouldn't believe it.

We made it! *throws confetti*

*looks at thread title again*

Hyyyyyyype!

Oh my.

I was going to post Haruka Ouma from Guilty Crown, but I fell asleep.

Yum.
Gotta give Production I.G credit for one thing, they know how to draw sexy women figures as evident in Guilty crown and Psycho pass. In fact they should do Rail War!

Oh okay.

I still don't think I get it.

I didn't get it either. Then I watched Medaka Box Abnormal. I'm not saying you should, because the show isn't very good, but the final episode which is totally stand alone and totally random was very entertaining. This is a... homage of sorts.

Duckroll is trying to make it difficult for us to reach Winter OT4 since it will now require 8 threads.

Nah, it actually continues to go down. -5, -6, -7, etc. Lulz.

Kumagawa da gawd is a Minus and not an Abnormal, hence -4.

This should actually just be in the OP. As should the link to the IRC, as it usually is.

There should also be a simulcast list and other useful information too. Unfortunately, Kumagawa disagreed. We'll just have to wait until he calms down or something. Remember,『It's not his fault!』

Oh wow, didn't know the winter season was this bad. Only Tamako Market and Sasami-san look good. I guess there is MMY, but I will most likely get bored of it if it follows the manga too closely.

I wake up to Kumagawa erasing the existence of OT4. Does his evil know no bounds!? I bet he also erased the work done on the winter OT, so now we have to stick to that chart for the whole season.

Thanks for the gift duckroll.

Winter season is truly backlog season.

What shows were sorted out for the group backlog, anyway?

I'm going to watch Trepeze and Mononoke as promised. I dunno if anyone is going to watch them with me. I haven't decided when I'll start yet though. In general, the "planning" for Winter is a mess because many of the good shows in Spring are still airing, most of Winter shows suck, and there were a lot of interesting announcements for Spring. So I don't think we really reached much of a consensus on anything. Then dresden stabbed me in the back with the thread change!
