God of War Ascension Screenshots - Best looking Console Game this gen ?

So um, do you think this will be on PSN before release? I wonder how long the Total Recall movie got exclusive rights to it.
I don't remember exactly (so you might as well ignore this) but I think that the GoWIII demo never went public. Or, at least, not for a very, very long time.

Edit: Nevermind. I guess it did a month or two before the game came out.

It'll probably be up end of January or early February. That's what happened with the GoW3 demo that was packed with District 9.

the animation in GOW 3 and now this really bother me.
they look really cartoony but everything else is so realistic that there is a strange diconnect between them

Wat. Kratos has always had an exaggerated, cartoony face. You can see it in the enemy design too. It's a good thing. Helps make the ultra-violence easier to stomach.

In the GOW HD Collection I remember watching a documentary where they talked about not rendering parts of the world that the player wouldn't see because the camera wouldn't allow it. Trust me, I think GOW3 and this look amazing, but being able to restrict what the player sees must help them somewhat. Still, the best part is the higher framerate than most other games this gen, while also looking drop dead gorgeous.

That's probably true. But GOW:A isn't the only AAA game using motion blur.

I mean can you seriously say with a straight face that it's going to look miles better than Crysis 3 on console?

In motion I can see how that's possible, especially on PS3. Crysis 3 will likely be running sub-HD and have a sketchy framerate.

not only is it not particularly technically impressive, the art itself is awful.

LMFAO the art is bad?

the art is phenomenal and the game in motion looks like something peter jackson would put together. no hyperbole. it looks incredible.

the way kratos animates, the natural lighting and texture work is just outstanding.

I'm out of this thread.

I think I remember an interview about GoW3 where they said the best thing about PS3 hardware is they don't have to fake out scenes like they did in GoW1 and 2. so I think the Kronos level for example, really did have the entire model and texture stored in the ram and they didn't chopped off part just to show the arm and head for example.

Funny you mention Peter Jackson since several points during 48fps Hobbit it reminded me of GoW.

He's talking about GoW3 specifically. And i'm guessing that he'd know about how things work with it considering that this is his occupation

easily on par.

I have played the demo over 30 times now and every single time I boot it up i am in complete awe. It looks like pure cgi in places.

They've animated his rage so well.

Wonderful.

It looks like he tripped on a plank on the ground and he exerts his vengeance on it.

It may LOOK better than everything else out there, but in motion the last of us will probably beat it from an overall technological standpoint. The animation will be better, the AI (miles ahead of everything else), not to mention ND will probably bring back their crazy physics from U2/U3 (which no other game has still matched). If they bring back their snow and water effects too, their pouring salt on the wound.

Not to take away from GoW though. Its second best.

I'm curious as to what you're referring to with Uncharted's physics. I just played through 3 again yesterday and I haven't seen anything in any of the games that is impressive from a physics standpoint. I've played them A LOT too.

Oh yeah, I forgot those were all real time. Still, the basic ragdolls and other environmental stuff (barrels, etc) aren't all that impressive and I'm not sure anything like those larger scale set pieces will be in Last of Us. Not taking away from the games as a technical accomplishment at all. I adore them and I also agree that Last of Us is going to be an achievement.

In 2 there is a train scene, the train actually moves and affects the gameplay. Its not a simple background movement.

The equivalent concept in 3 is the entire boat level and ship graveyard chapter.

Edit: Beaten.

ND has said that they are translating that technology for something in TLoU, but arent talking about it.

And I think the ragdolls and environment stuff are also seeing a big upgrade, if you watch the gameplay video (the 15 min version), you can see enemies reacting way more realistically to various gunshots and explosions etc (you can even see exit wounds). You'll also see how the environment is way more tangible, and is affected by player movements, much more so than Uncharted.

I love how freakishly pale Kratos looks in GoWA. I hope SSM doesn't listen to any of you fucks bitching about the lighting or anything else because it already looks phenomenal. It looks better than GOW3 to me.

TLOU, GOWA whatever, they're both PS3 games so all PS3 gamers win!

Ah, hadn't heard all that about physics in Last of Us. Been on a pretty strict media blackout for it.

if someone told me this is screencap from God of War cg movie like RE Damnation, I'd totally believe him.
The motion blur in that second shot is perfect. If we can get that standard next gen I'll be ecstatic.

GOW3 looks much better than Crysis 2 on consoles. Dunno about Crysis 3 and GOW Ascension.

GOWA looks better then GOW3 sorry. Ok it's stupid to say it based on demo, but if we judge based on DEMO, yes it looks better

The IQ is among the best for a console game. But I'm still more impressed with what I've seen from "The Last of Us" in motion.

This is true for every modern 3D game though.

2 questions mostly relevant to this thread.

1, how can one get hold of this ascension demo?
2, is there a similar thread to this / the PC gaming one which is 'all upcoming console games, amazing screenshots' thread? (and I mean this gen, not the next gen) - I assume the 360 and PS3 still have many tricks up their sleeves TBH.

1. Via Total Recall bluray [GoWA demo is not present in all regions], and PS+ users will get it "soon-ish". Demo is also available for cfw users, but that is not really legit way of accessing it.

2. No. Currently we dont have many announced nextgen games, and half of them are tech demos.

Wow, those shots look phenomenal!

Nope. There's still nothing that does GoW's style of combat better. Until that happens, it's not dated.

I think alot of people just think GoW combat is incredibly simplistic, compared to for example, Bayonetta.

Im one of those people.

God of War and Bayonetta have very different goals with their combat. GoW tries to represent an unstoppable brute of a fighter where Bayonetta is skilled, quick, and lithe. There is also a lot more depth in GoW combat than most people realize, particularly in 3, but it's not necessary to learn unlike in Bayo, DMC, or Ninja Gaiden. Ascension seems to be spicing it up a bit more.

Necessary for what?

Necessary to proceed through the game, presumably.

I think it's similarly true of those other games as well, though. You can get through any action game with a limited arsenal. The fun comes from doing more than is necessary.

On the other hand, Robo's point is supported by the fact that NG, Bayo, and DMC reward skillful play using the game's economy to a much greater extent than the GOW games do. So playing simplistically will get you through the game, but it may make it a lot harder because you won't be able to buy useful things. Nonetheless a player could master the basics and become very skilled at using them to proceed in the game without ever touching advanced techniques.

LOL..I gave in and bought Total Recall just to play the Ascension demo. :D I've gone through it about a dozen times now and I can't get enough of it. The first time I booted it up, I was amazed. It actually felt like I was playing a next generation console game. In addition to the superb visuals, the combat system is easily the best of any GOW game. As of now, this is my#1 most awaited game of 2013.

Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 3 look better and have a varied palette.

God of War III looked somewhat washed out and slightly blurry up close.

There's nothing in those two games that approaches GOW3's first twenty minutes. Or any game.
