Steam breaks 6 million concurrent users.

90M for registered users would be an interesting numbers. i expect Steam to brag about the 100M registration anytime soon in that case.

It would also make Steam the biggest (non mobile) platform for gaming, also the more hardcore (because based on digital downloads).

Valve only communicates about their active userbase (somewhere around 50+ Million), they've never bragged with total number of accounts.

i have maybe 2 steam accounts I forgot about but i do know people with multiple accounts as well but if that is straight up a unique 6 mill that would be pretty crazy

PSN numbers are also mixed with multiple accounts and multiple consoles. Also the case for Origin.

6M is not the number of unique gamers, it is the number of people connected at the same time (mostly all the time).

I find it interesting that none of the games within the top 5 are made by Valve.

I'd think it works the other way around. There probably aren't many people who really look for deals outside of Steam (which is probably a small percentage of the total Steam population), while I guess a lot of people will see a Steam sale and be happy with just buying it off Steam. But maybe eventually some are more willing to look from out of Steam and see what other DD sites are offering in exchange for Steam keys.

In both the Amazon and Steam sales threads, we all found out CODBLOPS1 was going to be 20$ on Amazon and it came up 20$ later on Steam. No one on GAF was going to bite but if you checked back later in the evening, it jumped up the Top Sellers chart for a while really quick, so I wouldn't discount a large portion of the Steam userbase.

Sure people look everywhere for deals. Unfortunately we dont have any hard numbers to compare, but what we do have are the threads on GAF and elsewhere when the big Steam sales roll around. Big Steam sales have become an event that has grown bigger every year.

Last years Christmas sale thread was so hyped even before the sale began that you saw Amazon Tony try too attach himself to the thread like a parasitic leech hoping to draw at least some attention to his sad little sale thread. Make no mistake, his job is like any other. He gets graded based on metrics such as how many posts and views his thread on NeoGAF got, and how many sales and views came from links clicked within the thread. Any parasite has a natural instinct on where to go to find the best host, and that is why Amazon Tony tried to embed himself in the Steam sale thread.

Just a quick update, I just noticed this:

Not sure if that's the absolute record, as there was no quick link to stats during those sales and I didn't bother searching less direct ways to access this page, but given how recently they broke the 6,000,000 barrier, that's an impressive number of concurrent users.

GO is fine, theres a reason why the top 1.6 players are switching or coming back to it when they never did for CSS

Its not a carbon copy of 1.6 but the differences are very minor

Yep.

Also

26,771 31,360 Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

Its numbers are fine and steadily climbing. For a non free to play game it's doing very well and will probably end up eventually replacing source when more people move on.

Not when that game has been on sale at 50% for the past 2 months. You had the BPM sale, and then 2 weeks of Winter sale.

and they will keep putting it on sale cause that's what they do with their games. Source was always on sale and same with 1.6. It's one of the most played games and most people agree its at least better than source. The competitive community is also backing it, so I don't see it going anywhere.

Not sure where to ask this question, so I'll ask it here:

I don't own a PC. I have a Mac without Steam loaded on it (didnt have much of a library that interested me on Mac). My nephew got a new PC for Xmas and I was wondering if there's a way I can gift him titles in Steam from a web interface, or am I going to have to install Steam? And if so, can Steam users on Mac gift PC versions?

http://store.steampowered.com/ Should be able to login in the top right and do purchasing/gifting just like you do from the client. Not sure if it automatically changes the store to be only Mac games if you're browsing on a Mac though.

You can send the gift via email at checkout.

It's the record I believe. There is a thread on the Steam forums that keeps track of the peaks: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1431974&page=43

The last year is quite possibly the best year for Steam's growth. In a year the MAU has jumped by at least 20 million accounts (when it's normally 10 million) and concurrent users have jumped by 3 million (when it's normally 1 million).

A little tangent, sorry; I'm so confused. Is Dota2 even out yet? It's the most popular game on Steam? Whaaa?

What BrokenEchelon said and it'll probably be an invite only beta for a few more months as Valve ups the server capacity, add the remaining heroes, add tutorials, and work with Perfect World Entertainment on getting the Chinese (and Korean?) versions released.

I played it for over 24 hours in my first two days of buying it. I've slowed down since then with work and all, but if you were to add together all the hours I've spent playing FM and CM before it since 1999 then I've probably given it at least 6 months of my life.

It's a ridiculously addictive game.

why? I've never played it, but what is the hook exactly?

I think your memory could use a rejig. ;)

Edit: So it did! What a stark difference two years makes.

There was an update to how Steam collects those stats which excluded servers running older server protocols and non-Steam versions (which there were a lot of). For some reason the Steam forum archives don't go that back so I can't find a link for it, but most of those servers used amx so you could still see them on sites like amxmodx.

edit: found one link for it http://steamreview.org/posts/playerstats/

Ah, right. Interesting.

To think, I got sucked into steam just because they offered Portal for free a while back...
Now I've got a whole damn library of games I'll never get to play/finish D;

Haha, ok, now I'm even more confused. I went to go see if Dota 2 was even on the Steam store, and it says "You already own Dota 2" yet it isn't in my library.

Computer games hurt my brain.

I believe you have the spectator client. If you want, you can relieve me of one of my actual copies of Dota2 sitting in my inventory
go away guys I asked him first

Oh wow, that's really nice of you. I'd take you up on that... if I wasn't a Mac user (it's not available on Mac, right?).

As someone who played CS for countless years, I had all but stopped over the last few. Despite GO not being perfect by any measure, it has rejuvenated my interest in the game completely because of the matchmaking system (which has even been broken half the time).

Hopping on with a couple of friends and jumping right into a 5v5 match is amazing. And its so much better to be playing CS than any other shooter on the market.

CS still played more than CSS and GO? I approve.

It's easier to run and more popular in Europe. The NA 1.6 scene is almost dead. GO won't overthrow it for a while, but GO is getting more players than CSS in the North American evenings.
