Edge #250 - The World's 50 Greatest Developers

Technical prowess and creativity. Yet one of the most significant technical achievements aswell as one of the most outspoken first person shooters: Killzone 2 by Guerilla Games not even mentioned makes me think these Edge guys really need to get their heads out of their arses.

Unreal Engine 4 in the next issue?

To be more specific, it's this exact image from an ever so slightly different direction:

Mojave made a game that's appealing to just about everyone without dumbing the gameplay down. They respected that people want depth in games, they didn't rely on cut scenes or graphics to bring people in. Hence why they're No 2.

Would of been shocked if Valve wasn't #1. Steam alone is keeping them a good distance out front.

In a list talking about greatest developers i dont think Steam should be a factor at all but just the games they developed, if it is then it wouldnt be a greatest developers list but something else imo. Like a most influential game company list or something.

BTW Mojang 2 rofl, i had forgotten who they even were until someone said it, now if you said notch then i would have known immediately. So your telling me if someone walked up to them and said who the greatest game devs are they would say Mojang ROFL

This list is nothing but crap.

Ninja Theory? Lulz. They don't deserve recognition. All they've delivered so far are two mediocre games in Heavenly Sword and Enslaved.

Why is Mojang 2nd? Minecraft might be popular but it's nothing new or really creative. Many things in the game feel unfinished or lazily done.

Quick question, isn't Nintendo EAD basically all their teams? Like just saying Sony Studios and throwing all their studios like ND, SSM etc. under one banner? I thought the teams had numbers or something.

If that really is the case, I'd say it's probably unrealistic for them not to be number one. I mean, Wii Fit, Wii Sports, Mario Galaxy 1/2, Metroid Prime 3, Zelda Twilight Princess, New Super Mario Bros. etc. all make a pretty good argument for output, influence and quality to be number one.

I believe the numbers are more to do with the producer / director groups than any teams. Nintendo works with a big pool of actual developer teams that shuffle from project to project.

This has some insanely questionable spots, the biggest one of course being Mojang at #2. That honestly blows me away. I don't know how they could even be included in the top 50 at all, let alone #2. Sony Santa Monica also seems kind of low considering their constant great output. That's just a couple things though; there's so much wrong with it altogether.

Nintendo's development process is still rather obscure and really only discovered through hardcore research. The media will commonly just say Nintendo EAD or "miyamoto". But there are actually two EAD departments (Kyoto and Tokyo) and also Sakamoto's SPD which all three are the main internal development arms of Nintendo Japan.

EAD Kyoto (Nintendo)
New Super Mario Bros. U (2012)
Nintendo Land (2012)
New Super Mario Bros. 2 (2012)
Animal Crossing: New Leaf (2012)
The Legend of Zelda: SKyward Sword (2011)
Mario Kart 7 (2011)
Nitendogs + Cats (2011)

EAD Tokyo (Nintendo)
Super Mario 3D Land (2011)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010)
DS Make Your Guide (2010)

SPD (Nintendo)
Style Savvy 2 (2012)
Brain Age 3: Concentration Training (2012)
Kiki Trick (2012)
Rhythm Heaven Wii (2011)

I just googled and came across all these games made by Nintendo EAD since the beginning of the generation:

Nintendogs
New Super Mario Bros.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Wii Sports
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Super Mario Galaxy
Wii Fit

Mario Kart Wii
Wii Fit Plus
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Super Mario 3D Land
Mario Kart 7
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
New Super Mario Bros. 2
New Super Mario Bros. U

I mean, really? If you're going to throw Nintendo EAD in there, I don't even understand how they wouldn't be number one. It's basically every Nintendo developer. Look at that shit. The titles in bold make a very strong argument to be number one for various reasons. The other stuff is really good too.

love the list. A lot of the companies that are higher on the list are definetly more innovative in gaming and it's great to see.

Bungie, valve, arkane all provided revolutionary gaming concepts and people bitching should do more research on their influence.

Why does Kojima Productions get on the list exactly? This has been the most unproductive generation for them, not to mention MGS4 <<<<<< MGS3.

Capcom has a way better portfolio than Konami / Kojima.

As someone who likes Notch, Mojang over Nintendo EAD is probably the dumbest thing I have seen this year.

Actually, anyone over Nintendo EAD is pretty bad.

And Quantic Dream in the Top 50 is another bad one.

This list goes beyond quality of games produced. Valve is privately owned and is a big player in the PC space. Their unique corporate structure, desire to improve and encourage modding communities, and ambition to improve player input (whether it be through hardware or software) is second to none in the PC space. If there's anyone running at the forefront of PC gaming, I'm glad it's Valve because they've made (imo) the healthier choices to make for consumers.

Valve I agree with. They've made some outstanding games in Half Life and Portal. TF2, CS and LFD I thought were OK, not much more than that, but I can certainly see why people went ape for them. Valve aren't in the business of releasing duds and industry leader is a moniker that fits them well. It's also a pretty good company to work for, and people love ol' Gaben. I just wanna grab his cheeks and squish them until his mouth makes a weird shape. Who doesn't want to do that?

Mojang at no2 I'm not so sure about. I love Minecraft, and that game really blew up, become a cultural phenomenon and made 'stars' of people on youtube and twitch. But they've only had the one hit. I don't think they should have been placed so high.

They establish the list as rating the all-time performance of a developer by putting Valve on top, and yet Blizzard and id are at 17 and 37, respectively. Mojang at #2 is... baffling seeing as they've made a grand total of one game but is part of a trend on the list of extremely small developers being given disproportionately huge recognition (had to google a few names).

Some good devs on that list, I'm not going to nitpick. But I will say golden-age Rare > all in my incredibly biased opinion. I realize this list is in reference to modern developers, and now I'm going to stop typing.

Valve is good but the rest of that list is shit.

Edit: Actually, I'm fine with Mojang being #2.

A lot of those dev shouts are ridiculous.

343? Halo 4 was great, but come on, one game?

Playdead? Again one game? Limbo was sweet, but hmm.

And Mojang at 2? Again, one game?

One product isn't enough to judge the talent of any creator.
You have a Hayley avatar so I'm gonna give you cred for that, but how is one game not enough to judge the creative ability of a developer on? I mean, this is GAF after all, and we eat a developer alive and claim them as shit when a single game made by them bombs.

No@Telltale? The only real succesful developer of episodic games? That only does adventure games of all genres? That made the game most people seem to think is GOTY last year? No, why should they be on a top 50 list. :p
Have you played Jurassic Park?
Have you played the Wii version of Sam & Max? (and other console ports...) An absolutely dire conversion that often hangs the Wii and cuts the end off every line of audio.
Have you seen their track record on patching their buggy games?

Are you effin kidding me? The developer that refuses to patch its games?

Guys, this list isn't so much about the quality of the games as it is of the philosophy and motives behind the developer. (I guess, haven't read the article.)

There is no way to make a list like this good.

Anyways, I still dont agree with most of the top 10. Subjectively of course, but Valve for instance hasnt made a game I enjoy since forever so I dont realy consider them a great developer.
