Games don't start at a 10 and lose points for things they do wrong. They start neutral and go up or down from there based on how good the overall experience is.

There's been games I had a hard time articulating any specific negatives about that I still wouldn't give higher than a 7 or 8, just because it didn't do anything to push itself into that top tier.

IGN hasn't given any Bioware game this gen a 10. In fact Bioware's best games scored... right around a 9.4.

Anyone else in the U.S. miss out on the Wizard version picking up the EU Wizard version? Sucks that the EU Wizard is missing items... not sure if I want to keep that EU preorder :\

I assumed it was the griffurnace or something. The text says that Griffy can evolve into more deadly forms, griffurnace and griffrigerator.

I'm really excited for this game! I'm a huge fan of Studio Ghibli and Joe Hisaishi, and though I don't have tons of experience with Level 5 games, I thought Rogue Galaxy was quite good even if I didn't finish it.

Got the CE pre-ordered for months now, and I'll be going in fairly blind as well - I've just watched screenshots, played the first section of the demo and only have a very basic understanding of the story, so it will be fun to discover more about it.

A bit of a shame that Europe gets it a little later than the US, but no big deal.

He's actually one of the main reasons I am hyped for this. Love him, he should totally do more video games.

Not that I can say myself but I'm sure as with the golden rule of JRPG's is that no matter how chummy and cheery things are shit will always hit the fan eventually.

The rpgland review was written on 10/28. Isn't that when the demo was released? Did they write that review based on only the demo of the game? Seems a little disingenuous if so

Was worried after first part of demo, recovered after playing 2nd part of the demo, but great to hear. May buy earlier than intended then.

That sounds great. I wasn't able to purchase the Wizard's Edition and I'm not in the US so I can't get the steelbook, but I'm getting the guide for sure.

The IGN review brought me back into the "will probably buy" camp. I was concerned it was going to be a typical jrpg and the side quests were going to be typical basic fetch crap, and while that seems to be there I liked that idea of the stamp card or whatever it is. It also helps that this game is coming out when just about nothing else is.

Probably based on the Japanese version of the game, which was released more than a year ago.

Really surprised at those reviews scores. I thought this game had so-so WOM when it came out a year ago in Japan. I don't remember it making much of a splash with J-GAF.

I was planning on skipping it until it hit bargain prices, but reviews have convinced me to give the demo a spin and go from there.

Not many people here played it. But I've continually said that it's one of Level-5's most highly rated games in Japan. The most major complaints about it are fairly minor (poor voice quality, crappy AI, difficulty spikes).

Anyway,

Can someone (without any spoilers), tell me if the story is actually compelling? That is the only thing holding me back. Is it light and fluffy on the top with some more mature themes running underneath the surface? (Like every excellent JRPG, especially from the 16bit era).

This is what I'm debating I got my Game pre-order in but thinking about just getting the Prima guide and game from Amazon. ughhhh I don't want to wait but I love the idea of the spellbook in English.

The Japanese spellbooks are gorgeous. Hope the English ones are just as nice.

For what it's worth, namco are really trying to push this in the UK, possibly more than I've ever seen with a jrpg here actually.

Well at least I can wait to hear what you guys all think about the english spellbook and if it doesn't sound up to the standard I'll just cancel my order. That's one advantage to waiting a extra week I guess.

For me... I tend to look past bad game elements if I enjoy everything else. (Voice acting is a little harder to overlook but like crappy AI or difficulty spikes, they don't tend to bother me)

I'm glad you think that way.

Ni No Kuni continues to climb the amazon charts. Currently sitting pretty at #12 in all of video games. Good accomplishment for a non-Final Fantasy JRPG. Hope the overall sales are strong.

While Ni No Kuni might still be a week away for gamers in the United States, the game has already appeared ready to download on the Japanese Playstation Store. And you are not going to enjoy the downright magical size of the download.

How big is it? Nineteen gigabytes. It hurts just to type that. Sure it isn't the largest game installation ever, but you have to keep in mind that the Playstation 3 requires at least double the size of the game's download size to be free and accessible in order to install the game, so you actually need to have 38gigs free on your hard drive to download it.

So if you're looking to go on a magical adventure on your PS3 next week, then you better start making space for it.

That's why the installation step is super lame.

For digital distribution to work, it has to work like XBL or Steam where you download the files and you don't need extra space after the download is completed. There are so many complications that can be avoided by doing that, too, beyond just reducing the amount of space necessary. Like being able to fix a broken installation without redownloading the whole thing.
