[Eurogamer\DF] Orbis Unmasked: what to expect from the next-gen PlayStation.

New IP got the shit kicked out of it after 2008, and even then, some of it really struggled. When a hardware generation starts, you've got 3-4 years, maybe, of people looking for new things. Then they want iteration. That might not be what you want, but it's what the market does. That's honestly the second most exciting part of a new generation: new IP. The first obviously being "HOLY SHIT LOOK AT THAT THIS IS AMAZING."

I don't hold much hope that that's going to be the case this time, not to the extent that it was during this generation. Call me cynical, but I'd wager that new IP push is going to be replaced with the usual mantra of less risk taking sooner than we'd all like.

There's quite a bit of difference between having netflix, a web browser, and cross-game chat on your console and the likely goals that Microsoft is going to push.

Hence why PS4 is allegedly only allocating 512 MB of RAM and Durango is going for 3 GB.

And Sony is also pushing TVs.

3D, 4K, advanced motion control gaming.

Hell GT5 was pushing more Sony stuff than any other PS3 title.

We really can't go off what we see in rumors. At E3, all intents will be clear.

That's why I'm not getting my hopes up completely. I don't think there is a lot of "wiggle" room for New IP's that won't in some way be an instant hit. At least in the AAA space.

Yeah, I know.

We won't be seeing PS4 producing an image of Agni's Philosophy like in the trailer, right? Watch Dogs? 1313?

That's all I'm saying. It would have been nice if it matched those, at least.

This post is ridiculous.

Do I need to remind you that the PS4's rumored specs are around 10X that of the PS3 currently?

And PS3 produced Uncharted 2 & 3.

Agni's Philosophy will easily be exceeded on PS4 by Sony's own studios.

There are already three new IPs announced for next gen and the consoles haven't even been announced - Ryse (technically new, definitely next gen), Watch Dogs, and 1313. You're going to see a LOT of new IP at E3 this year. I would go so far as to say 50 percent? Maybe more?

You'll also see some pretty major reboots. There was another one of those off the show floor at last year's E3.

It's not that far off in characters.

You can bet that virtually every second team at Sony (1st/2nd) is working on a new IP: Sucker Punch, Guerilla, SSM, Quantic, and more. Microsoft seems to want to deliver a new experience through Black Tusk and others.

I wish it was comparable to a GTX 680. Apparently that's what was running Agni's Philosophy at 1080p/60fps.

I have a 7870 for my PC, so the 7970M doesn't seem all that impressive to me.

Ah well. Games are still gonna start looking a whole lot better as soon as the new consoles drop. It would be pretty cool if Agni's Philosophy is running at 1080/30 or 720/60 on these new consoles, while running at 1080/60 (or higher) on PCs at the very same time it is released.
Euro gamer seemed to be guessing based on the GPU

You will. Really. Square didn't commission Luminous so they could fuck around on PC.

That's what I was thinking. Same deal with UE4.

But then what's all this talk of a 7970M? Again, I'm under the impression that it's about as powerful as a 7870, and that doesn't even come close to a GTX 680, which is what's needed to run Agni's at 1080p/60fps?

Again, correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not really a tech expert.

People guessing the specs and making assumptions. Nothing out of the ordinary.

And nobody under NDA will reveal the real specs... Not yet at least.

Naughty Gods or Guerilla can trump that if the Orbis specs are true.

It's been speculated that the PS4 will have a "lite" version of the OS while the game is running and a larger 1gb OS outside if games. Simular to what the Vita does.

I'm leaning towards Sony this gen. I can't wait to see what they both produce.

I am too simply because Sony has so many first-party studios that can blow my mind. I'll get the Xbox at some point down the road but it's easier to justify the purchase when there's a lot of a exclusives I like. I seem to be a PC/PS3 person plus both handhelds and the Wii U will be mine a few years later once Zelda and shit is out.

It's good to be a gamer. It's bad to be a broke gamer with no change in my future for a while. I need to find a place to work from home for my crippled ass...lol

A lot of people here seem to underestimate the power of CLOSED systems. It might not have a 680 in it, but you'd be surprised what they'll get out of the PS4. I mean, look at God of War and The Last of Us this year on the PS3 and just think what the PS4 has in store for us.

What we need are not ceilings but benchmarks.
Benchmarks as to show how close to the ceilings we get. And on console, we will only get benchmarks via games.

I did wonder why the few next gen games we saw at e3 used a GTX680. At the time I thought it was because it was the best graphic card on the market.

Sooo.. are games like Crysis 3 going to be easily achievable on these machines, or what?

If one targets sub 720/900p with no antialiasing, tessellation, or other dynamic options at 30-40 fps, then yes.

The same applies for Agni's Philosophy and Samartian Demos. They will NOT be at the same level as what we saw in the videos last year, neither in frames nor graphical quality.

Or just use the same PPAA for Crysis 3 on PC that frees up performance.

You're really low balling the work Crytek is optimizing for next gen, which will be the baseline, not benchmark going forward.

I'm going to post this again because I don't think anyone saw it and because I am interested in opinions. It was a couple pages back:

Is 512mb RAM future proof on PS4? What if something becomes popular like cross game chat did?

Honestly I've been wondering about this myself.

XBOX360 has 512mb total, and it did fine, even with all those ads. lol

I'm not talking about cross game chat specifically. What if there is another feature that blows up and becomes popular which requires more hardware requirements?

EDIT: To clarify, I am not talking about cross game chat specifically. What if some crazy feature, lets say streaming, becomes an option on Durango. I'd love to do that on my PS4, but could it do it? Sony couldn't include cross game chat because of hardware limitations, I am asking if that would happen again in the future.

Right. Some weird media feature, I'm sure. If the initial footprint of the OS is small, yet satisfies what you want the PS4 to launch with -- then it might not be such a concern.

512 will be plenty in my opinion. The OS just has to perform its core functions and have as few bloatware as possible. And besides, that's just the RAM limit, not the storage limit.

Am I the only one that can't get excited over this technical mumbo jumbo? Anyone able to tell me in basic terms. :p

Whether it be pictures/footage of the graphics or something!

Much appreciated.

When it comes to running Agni's Philosophy i don't think that is out of reach can't talk for Crysis 3.
Reading about the the demo it was very unoptimized and was running on a i7 3770K @3.5 GHz ( but did not need it since the CPU usage was really low)
The GPU was a GTX 680 but it was only using 1.8 GB of VRAM @60fps with 8x MSAA + FXAA + Depth of Field for AA ( you can cut down on that )
Yes the PC had a extra 32GB RAM but that was also running the editor software simultaneously .

EDIT looking back at the thread i was wishing for 4GB of GDDR5 i guess it happen .
