The combat is completely bogged down by must-have long cooldown skills and defensive abilities.
PoE is a lot better for hack slash combat.

Anyway, lost my 26 HC ranger I used in a party. We were actually pretty suprised we made it to these lvl's xD none of us was playing extremely serious.
Considering OB is coming in the next couple of days, I honestly couldn't care less about losing any of my HC characters.
I kicked in funds to this game months ago because I wanted to support it, but didn't really want to play much until it was kinda finalized. Now I'm looking through these build of the week videos and holy shit does the game look deep. Gonna take advantage of these last days of closed beta and play around with some stuff.

They haven't mentioned FFX but they did say that the gem-system was heavily inspired by FFVIIs materia!

Gems are your skills. You'll only unlock passive-stuff from the tree; not stuff you can actually activate or use.
I think you press U to open the "spellbook". Not sure though :3
Gems are the skills. The tree is only passive stuff. If you played FF7 then that's roughly how they work. If your armor has linked slots, you can use a support gem along with a skill gem to alter how that skill works. Ex linking a projectile skill with the fork support gem makes your projectiles split into two upon impact.

Oh wait, you said support gems, sorry I read that as skill gems for some reason. Not sure, I can't recall ever finding a support gem in act 1.

I think I waited half a year and still didn't get it. That was a while back.
To add to what the others said, gems are your skills that drop from monsters like any other item and even can have random properties. You also get gems as rewards for completing quests. There is no spellbook as the gems are like any other item and can be sold/traded. If a gem is socketed then that skill will gain experience and eventually level up causing it to be more effective.

The skill tree is not a skill tree, its a passive skill tree. There is no active in the skill tree at all.
The gems are all the skills in the game, you need to socket skills in your armors or else you dont have any skills. Also the gems level up, the more you use it. You can also boost skills by linking gems to other gems. So you have to balance between what skill you want and what skill you want boosted.
But the tree unlocks the ability to use certain gems? Or does it augment the abilities? I think its really cool, just having a hard time wrapping my head around the intricacies. Only have a level 8 witch so far.
