Netflix launches 'Super HD' and 3D streaming - for certain ISPs

Are you sure your not getting 5Mbps? I am not exactly a fan of Cablevision, but all of their plans in the NY Tri-State area offers a minimum of 15Mbps

You're right, I was confused. I thought 5Mb/s meant 5 Megabytes per second, I didn't realize that Mb/s and Mbps mean the same thing. Speedtest.net says that my download speed is 18.84Mbps.

:D

As I said before, I don't think things are going to change with the major providers like TWC, FIOS, Comcast, etc. So if you have those, don't expect to get Super HD for quite a while (if ever).

Sorry, should have been more clear. I'm getting Netflix in Australia using Unblock Us on my PS3. SirMossyBloke said it stopped working for him. I've had no issues at all.

I'm not sure unblock-us Super HD is working. I see the Super HD icon but I get about the same transfer speeds as with regular HD. I tested with the movie Sahara and episodes of House of Cards.

With unblock-us 'Super HD'. First eight minutes of the first episode of House of Cards. It spikes to 6.5Mbps for the first minute but then settles down after that. This spike happens with regular HD too so it's not indicative of Super HD.

I havent run tests like the above, but I'm using unblock-us, getting the SuperHD label, and watching House of Cards on ATV/Netflix I do subjectively notice a jump in quality. It looks really sharp.

vazel, "super HD" might not just be a data rate increase, but a better codec/higher profile H.264 mode or somesuch. Do we know it is actually supposed to be higher data rate?

edit - looking back at OP I see "targeted for 7 megabits"... assume the old "HD" was 5? at any rate it would be hard to compare a like-for-like scene, the required compression might simply not be any different...

Yes, we're supposed to get higher bitrates. It's in the OP. The entire point of partnering with ISPs is so Netflix can reduce their load.

360 Netflix is behind a pay wall and they can't get this?

I'm surprised they're blocking the 360 due to resolution but are letting the WiiU pass on stereo output.

What does pcm stereo have to do with video bitrate and 3D?

If there is a Netflix Super Sound edition, I'm sure 360 is in.

It's pretty wonky right now. We're trying to figure it out over on the thread we have going at AVSForum. Come on over and post your results, we'd appreciate it.

As far as we can tell, just the Win8 Netflix app (US) and the Canadian Netflix servers for dedicated platforms (PS3/Blu-Ray players, etc) seem to be reliable for SuperHD w/Unblock-Us.

I'm glad I decided to do my due diligence before I started paying for unblock-us. I'll hold off until this all gets sorted out.

It could be more than just Unblock-Us. It could be that SuperHD just isn't working properly and we were the first to notice it. I doubt many would test it the way we would over at AVSForum.

The fact it works fine on the PC and Canada gives me pause. Those are both different servers.

More ISPs must have been added. Just noticed I'm getting Super HD with Cox.

Wii U lists the stream as X-High though, which makes me wonder if they're just the old encodes...
