Steam Linux actually runs smoother than the Windows counterpart for me, I currently have 30 linux games on steam:

Although getting games to run is another issue.

That looks so neat. Too bad I suck at Linux, I can't even install programs.

That, and the lack of compatibility for games of course.

Ever since a recent update my client crashes constantly, I can't even launch a game under Ubuntu 12.04. Up until then I'd have agreed almost completely, except that I've also had a few issues with hearing the chat notification sound but being totally unable to find the actual chat window.

I did upgrade from 10.04 to actually Steam Linux, right now I'm trying to work out how to red rid of Unity.

Steam BPM runs amazingly bad as well on Ubuntu.

My exact experience as well, lol. The client is not only smoother, but more responsive as well. And that's with the fact I have Ubuntu installed on a ~10 y/o 5400 rpm harddrive. Just goes to show what you can do with the OS if you actually put some effort in.

It's just a shame game support is shit. If you do manage to get it running, the performance is shit because the drivers are shit.

You learn a lot getting things to work on Linux, so I'm loving it, got Steam running on Mint cinnamon which is a much better desktop than ubuntu unity imo.

Recently I build a PC, my first Linux Ubuntu PC.

The second Application I've installed was Steam (first, Chrome).

The only problem with Steam Linux is to have Psychonauts in list, but not playable.

Never tried this but this will probably work, in terminal:

1. to remove unity

sudo apt-get remove unity unity-2d unity-2d-panel unity-2d-spread unity-asset-pool unity-services unity-lens-files unity-lens-music unity-lens-applications gir1.2-unity-5.0 unity-common indicator-sound indicator-power indicator-appmenu libindicator7 indicator-application indicator-datetime indicator-messages libnux-2.0-0 nux-tools libunity-misc4 unity-2d-common

2. to install cinamon

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cinnamon

oh cool, I'll try it out when I can.

I'll probably buy Brutal Legend on PC, despite the wonky RTS stage boss battles I thought it was a pretty great game. Loved the soundtrack, loved all of the cameos, loved the writing and the art direction. That game is like an interactive Frank Frazetta painting.

The third time's the charm for me and Darksiders, but I still think DS 2 is the superior game. And Derrick's schtick about the fetch quests are laughable to me. Cause this game has got a bunch of really obvious and annoying padding. Give me DS 2's "fetch quests" to new areas any day over some of this stuff.

I really like the game (now that I didn't bork my precious upgrade points during the most difficult stage of the game... the beginning), but it's a ridiculous argument IMO to knight DS and crucify DS2 in this area.

Dota 2 - My nephew plays HoN and enjoys it quite a bit, so I want to try a MOBA. I want to try this out but I get the feeling I'm going to be completely clueless on how to play it and wind up sucking hind tit every game. Is there a match-making system that gets all the clueless players into the same game so they can fuck up without screwing up experienced players?

There are a few quick starter guides that will help acclimate you to the basics of gameplay and heroes--like How To Play Dota 2 in 4 Minutes or Dota Cinema's 2-3 minute long character-specific guides--but nothing will replace practice. Play in bot matches on your own and try out a few different heroes after looking at guides of characters you think you might be into. If you've got an experienced friend, try playing in coop bot matches with them. Once you're kind of familiar with gameplay basics and a few heroes you think you like, dive in to coop bot matches and try playing with others against a team of bots. If you go into a public match, at least somewhat prepared, you'll find your teammates to be more receptive or helpful if they perceive that you at least kind of know what doing and aren't just mashign your keyboard.

Have a mic. Use it. At the very least use text to communicate.

I would recommend trying a ranged/support hero since they're strictly level based, you just have to stay where the action is and not worry about last hits since supports don't really require gold or gear to be helpful to their team. If you buy a courier and ward, at least at round start, you'll immediately have thankful, friendly teammates. If you assist in ganks, even more gratitude.

Ultimately you'll want to probably try out each hero at least once. You will want to know who might face and what they are capable of. Also you never know which hero may appeal to you until you play them. But support is probably a good place to start.

Edit: I understand that there's a lot of information to digest and that's intimidating, at first. However, once the game starts to click that's what you love about it, that there's some much to learn.

I remember a while ago seeing a site that collated all of the indie bundle info in one place - humble, royale etc. I forgot to bookmark it at the time. Does anyone know the site I'm thinking of?

Sort of related since it's Steamworks - has anyone managed to stream Sleeping Dogs to Twitch using Origin's built in streaming?

I tried before, made sure Steam Community was disabled for the game and Origin In-Game was enabled, but it doesn't work. Origin In-Game doesn't even show up, so I'm guessing that's the root of the problem.

I have a little question regarding the original Deus Ex, and I thought this thread was the best place to ask it. I've beaten the 3rd level
(the one that takes place in Castle Clinton, and then in a park, a hotel and an NSF building with a generator I had to destroy)
and I didn't kill any enemy, yet everyone (including my player character) seems to think I'm a mass murderer. Could it be because the game counts the enemies killed by my allies as if they were killed by me? If that's the case, then I'll never be able to achieve a no-kill playthrough, and it sucks.

That's a well-known bug/quirk of that level. Basically, if you go the frontal assault route, the game puts the "killer" flag on you for that level, so you have to use one of the alternate entrances (Vending Machine, Big crate) if you want to avoid that. Once you infiltrate using one of those other entrances, you need to stay away from the front entrance until your mission in there is done, otherwise it'll trigger the frontal assault route.

I'm not really sure Deus Ex was designed around a no kill run in terms of dialogue.

Fuck, so now my no-kill playthrough is ruined. I'm not going to start again, but I'll keep that in mind if I ever play it again. Wish I'd known that sooner :/

And the worst part is that I actually went through the vending machine entrance, but I wanted to explore the whole level before entering there.

Now that the IP is back in DF's control they can rename Brutal Legend back to the name it always meant to have, untethered from the suits and the marketing people.... VTA225260

It's an attempt to stuff the cat back into the bag. That's not going to happen, though, the internet being the internet, and if you click the "History" tab you can view the sub's previous state.

Oh, you're right, in the History tab I can see the previous state, thanks Jase :)

The marketing department at work again. It tested better surely.

But this happened to all entries in the Steam registry?

Hmm, installed drivers for my laptop gpu and still running problems trying to get games running on Steam Linux.

I was trying to get HL1 Beta to work to no avail.

2. to install cinamon

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cinnamon

this worked like a charm, thanks.

It probably feels pretty rewarding as a game designer to be able to still throw a small portion of the Internet into a tizzy with a port of one of your games 4 years or so later.
