Aliens: Colonial Marines |OT| Game Over Man, GAME OVER!

Aliens 3 is amazing and everyone who hates it, as far as I can tell, has been justifiably turned off by the Fox edit, rather than the re-edit that fixes the shit out of it.

Hating on Aliens 3 is like hating on Blade Runner 'cause of the original ending.

I don't mind any of the endings actually.

Don't forget A3: ASSEMBLY CUT.

Count me in the A3 fanclub. Don't get the hate,
probably because they killed off hicks and newt.
(which I don't have problem with)

I've just realised I know nothing about this game.

I think its a first person shooter, aliens are involved, other than that....?

I think the trailer, if it was stand-alone, would be fine. But it isn't stand-alone. There was the movie on which it's based, and the apparent lack of creativity Gearbox has put towards the game is astounding. It's like they didn't even take the time to think about the universe or explore the myriad possibilities they had in front of them, and instead just watched Aliens and said at the beginning of every scene "We need to figure out a way to shoehorn this into our game". Yes, everyone quotes and cites and loves Aliens to death, but so far it seems like they've taken a far too literal approach to transferring that into a game.

And I've asked three times already, and still no one can provide an answer as to how there's still a Hadley's Hope at all when a gigantic fucking nuclear explosion went off a mile away.

I fear that with the squad-based tactical portion of the game being removed, the corridor shooting gallery alone will not sustain a full campaign here. I think they should taken more risks with this I.P but at this point, just getting it out of the door is a success.

If it was up to me, i'd have made a X-COM style Aliens game, where you have a drop-ship as the 'base' and have to explore the planet gradually.

The assembly cut was indeed much better, although I prefer the dog chest bursting scene to the (oxen? cow?) one. I think people would view it more favorably if they watched that edit instead. But still, the movie has a bunch of other problems which can't really be fixed with a simple cut. For starters there's the abrupt end of two characters that audiences really liked, which you mentioned. Which is not only depressing but it also kind of diminishes a lot of what happened in Aliens, which many consider to be the better film. Actually that reminds me of that Back to the Future gif...

spiderman356k.gif

Not only that, but it's mostly a retread of the first film (one alien, isolated environment, no weapons) except now the alien isn't really scary anymore because we've seen so much of it already - there's no mystery to it. It's also a really depressing ending for Ripley after the first 2 movies had her narrowly escaping death, only to finally see her die because somehow an egg got on board the Sulaco. It just feels forced and kind of insulting. Not only that, but none of the other cast members really stick out. I honestly preferred watching a mangled Bishop make a cameo than watching any of the other characters. Also, what was with the doctor she had sex with, and then he just dies?

I don't know, I recently watched the making of Alien 3 of youtube (highly recommended) and after seeing all the shit they went through behind the scenes I appreciate what they were able to accomplish in that scenario, but I find it strange when people say they don't get the hate. There's a lot to hate in the movie, and even the director hates it.

That OT fantastic *slowclap*. Yeah marketing i have not seen anything anywhere. Not on websites or even the newspaper here in the netherlands.

Fan fiction seems like an apt description.

It's like Gearbox made a cake from looking at a picture, instead of the actual recipe. Aliens is probably the coolest franchise to work with, but it's also the hardest. It's the very reason for some of the biggest action games throughout history to even exist. It's a shame that this ended up as such a blunt and literal game, with seemingly no understanding of what made Aliens great. It kinda reminds me of the Watchmen film adaptation in a way.

I'm getting this regardless. I HATE what Cameron did with the Alien itself, turning it basically into a non-threatening piece of cannon-fodder, but I love the military aspect, the weaponry and the machinery of the film.

I kinda agree with this, but I think the point was to look at it from another perspective. Even though the xenomorphs were extremely deadly, we had the hubris of ridiculous firepower. So while we theoretically could easily beat them, it wasn't the guns that failed us, but human nature.

No, I totally agree with your point. I like the way he took the film and the concepts in it, but on the other hand I think he took it way to far in the action-movie direction. It totally lost that Gothic space horror vibe that was so amazing about the first film. I mean, in Alien, once the creature boarded the ship, the environment of it itself felt like it began to change, IMO.

I'm not saying Aliens is a bad movie in any regards. I don't think it deserves the praise that it gets, but watching it now as an adult after I saw it in theaters as a child (my dad took me to see Platoon too . . . when I was 10 :) ), it doesn't seem as 'cool.'

Edit: that's a great new trailer, btw.

Its just a game... :p

I think it looks great as I am a huge fan of Aliens the movie. I realize its not realistic to the movie because Hadleys Hope was blown up but I am excited to return there in digital form.

What did he give Vanquish?

"And to reflect a different opinion, Arthur Gies tweeted :

"since the embargo is up, i don't have much good to say about vanquish. it's repetitive, clunky, and irritatingly punitive. very japanese."

Not that it matters for me personally. I don't expect everyone to enjoy every game. Plain and simple. To each their own.

/raises hand

But $44.99... thanks Amazon and PC?

But yeah, that pulse rifle. Don't care if the game is utter crap, I get to shoot that thing and my inner 13 year old at the Aliens movie back in '86 with his dad is going to squeeeeeeeee.

Basically me too. And I'm getting the collectors edition for that figurine as well. Though I don't think it will be bad, just average perhaps. I forgot, around these parts liking games that don't blow people away gets you the stink eye :p

And yet they love Binary Domain and Vanquish around here. Crazy, ain't it?

I miss old "average" style shooters like Rage. Just send me down some corridors in some Aliens-y type mess and I'm all in. Hell, throw in some monster closets! I don't care!! AHHH AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA

I like posters like you Slasher that you can tell just love videogames, period. I'm the same way and its disheartening to always see such negativity on the internet.

I actually dig both versions. Im one of the few that really love that entry in the series.

I've definitely come to appreciate it more... but when I first saw it in the theatre I was let down. I expected some semblance of the action of Aliens or the horror of Alien and that was blown away in the first few minutes when I found out Newt and Hicks were dead. It was hard not to resent anything that came after that.

It was jarring and unceremonious to be sure. I've watched the series a few more times since then, and while I've come to appreciate 3 more, I just can't get over the idea that it just doesn't belong.

Guys...guys I just had a thought! What if they've barely shown any of the game because secretly it's actually a survival horror game after the first couple of action heavy levels. Same way as the movie, your team go in all gunho and get annihilated and the rest of the game is all tense lonely scary Aliens style.

Still a crappy OT? OP still not juniored? Ok.

It would have been helpful to get some basic info on the game, but I guess GAF is letting its standards slip.
