Aliens: Colonial Marines review thread of broken dreams and movie references

I'm a huge Alien fan so even if this had been mediocre I would have been there first in line to pick this up. Doesn't even seem to be run of the mill which is just sad. Guess this thread has saved me $60 at least.

Never expected it to get brutalized this bad. My time with it so far doesn't lead me to believe it's anywhere close to a 4/10 game.

I'm going to pick this up in a Steam sale for £10 and no doubt enjoy it.

I just wanted to say a big Fuck You to Gearbox. Or at least, to everyone in there that obviously didn't give a single fuck about this project.
Alien is my favorite movie ever, and I love this universe.
Now comes Gearbox, and they take about 5 fucking years to develop this game and then it turns out shit. Well fuck them. Fuck them for not understanding what Aliens is all about. Fuck them for giving bullshit interviews saying this is canon and they were very careful not to ruin it. Fuck them for making the shitiest trailer that could ever be made for a game like this.
They should be imprisoned in space with a fucking xenomorph in their fucking ship so that they would finally understand how we want to feel when playing an Alien game.

Tomonobu Itagaki should make the next aliens game. Talking about Ninja Gaiden, he once said something like, "Enemies aren't there for you to kill. They're there to kill you." That's the concept that needs to be at the core of a real Aliens game. They should be there to fuck you up if you let them get the drop on you. Not be pathetic cannon fodder.

True, Aliens shouldn't be some easily killed cannon fodder.

That is one reason why the marine campaign in AvP (1999) worked so well. Aliens spawned randomly and could kill a player in couple of hits (health didn't regenerate). Facehuggers and predator killed you instantly if you weren't ready. And before patch, every death threw you back to the beginning of the level instead of some convenient checkpoint couple of seconds ago. All of that combined made truly intense experience that worked, and I was waiting a game that could offer more of that.

It really does seem like these guys loved the source material so much that they couldn't deviate from just aping it and referencing it at every opportunity, and like i said earlier, forgot to make an actual game that expands upon and leverages off the movie to make something really exciting. Instead SMOTHERing it with love like Diane Keaton.

I remember I playtested this game in an early form in a focus group thing back in 2009 or 2010. And frankly, I thought what I tried out was pretty crappy back then.

Also they didn't listen to me and stuck with the terrible subtitle. I'm sorry, "Colonial Marines" is a fucking awful title for anything.

Just like with DNF: production took ages, dozens of studios involved, one big puke at the end. RIP Alien franchise.

Brandon Justice wins the Official Doritos Papal Hat Award For Ethics in Games Journalism.

This, 9 out of 10 should be given to games that are possible game of the year contenders.

Would love to see an Alien game that takes inspiration from condemned. Poor lighting, strange noises and fewer enemies. What I want is less Aliens more Alien.

So the Xenomorph went from one of the scariest enemies in cinema history to a pussy piece of shit generic enemy in this game :( No respect.

For some reason I thought/remembered that this game was pretty good looking graphics wise but watching some gameplay videos its got some awful geometry and textures. Too bad, it could have been an interesting game, especially on the Wii U.

Some quotes from Penny Arcade Report. The title says it all really.

Let’s start with the most basic problems. There are animations missing in the game and the cutscenes are ugly to the point of distraction. The characters don’t seem to have any physical boundaries, or are unaware of each other. When you have two characters in an action scene, they tend to stand inside each other for some reason. “I’m going to be okay,” a woman tells a man in one scene, and then reassuringly places her hand inside his chest.

Because people aren't allowed to disagree? There is no objectively bad, I'll remind you.

'Things are even worse in co-op play, where the frame rate plummets and the graphical spasms become almost unbearable. Thick-skinned fans of the movie may be able to suffer through this parade of technical blunders to get to the small kernel of movie nostalgia inside, but you have to ask: if this didn't have the Aliens branding, would it even have see the light of day?'

Oh dear!! I thought Co-op was one area this game may redeem itself.

Trust no one. Eat steaks.
Maybe this is why it was delayed on Wii U, because it didn't meet Nintendos Seal of Qwalerty.

Looks like Sega will have to rethink its four pillars consisting of Aliens, Sonic, Football Manager and Total War.
