Looks like activision has a winner on it's hands... the game looks amazing, the concept allows the world to be expandable, and im sure bungie will deliver on the gameplay. look like there's a another pillar activision has outside of call of duty and world of warcraft.

The polygon report said that
"When it's coming out. Activision and Bungie have not announced when Destiny will come to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, or when it will come to next-generation platforms. Activision says it's not factoring Destiny into its financial guidance for 2013. "We'll have announcements about release timing when we're ready," Activision says."

Is that FY2013? If so that means "Not before october this year." If it's calender, then not in 2013.

FWIW, Claude confirmed no Microtransactions was stated at the event over on DBO.
This is an important thing to note. I would imagine it means FY2013 as that quote most likely came from their most recent investor call. Which could leave Destiny the holiday release window that would be reported in FY2014.

I can't imagine Bungie/Activision will want to miss out on the inevitable crazy holiday season this year.

seamless world with micro transactions all over the place... look like there's a another pillar activision has outside of call of duty and world of warcraft.

According to at least one person at the event, micro transactions were ruled out.

Colors.
Skyboxes.
General Movement.
Sci-fi.

You've got to understand how limited some posters game view is. I'm sure a good chunk of these posts don't even care about shooters in general.
I certainly couldnt critique most other genres without huge generalizations.

For example, JRPGs. I'd probably get banned for my honest opinions on the genre.

It's really the laziest criticism you could level at it, and incorrect to boot.

cool... i saw the quote and edited my post.

im looking forward to seeing if bungie can do it again. the production values are really high... and it's coming at the beginning of next gen. i wouldn't be surprised if this game really becomes a system mover.

The vidoc and the ideas in it sound awesome. My excitement was watered down when i found out it needs to be online all the time, though.

A really ambitious concept. I have faith but definitely want the extra HP of next gen/pc to give it all it needs to be.

Destiny is getting some huge advertising on the Xbox Dashboard. Hopefully that's a good indication to it being a Durango exclusive, like the contract said...
I wouldn't read much into it. Playstation uploaded the ViDoc to their official channel.

I think the exclusivity details of the contract have changed dramatically.

Online only doesn't bother me. The lackluster method of reveal doesn't bother me. Bungie's hyperbole doesn't bother me. The gameplay footage that some people are underwhelmed with doesn't bother me.

What bothers me is that since Halo: Combat Evolved, Bungie has talked like the sky is the limit and has frequently failed to deliver. Until Reach, they couldn't figure out how to model humans. They've been the first to do a great number of things. Console FPS controls. Matchmaking. Saved films. They truly innovate in the infrastructure of gaming. Where they have let me down is in actual game content.

Their Halo games had great multiplayer. They created a great universe. Single-player however, left room to be desired. In my mind, 343 really blew them out of the water. Bungie would show flashes of good ideas but spin their wheels and drudge through "Yeah this is pretty good" levels for the most part. They spun out of control with their story for Halo despite creating an amazing universe with incredible depth. They lost focus.

What I'm trying to say is, I'm hesitant. Despite all Bungie has done for console gaming, I'm not sure that they can deliver a game that I really want to play all the time, again. Hopefully they prove me wrong. I'd really love a new vice in my life. But until I see more that makes me step back and say "wow" or have the game in my hands, I'm going to keep my hype in check.

Darn it. I secretly want it to be exclusive to Durango (PS3 and Xbox 360 release, Durango release but no Orbis) so I can have something to justify my Durango purchase this year. :p

Take a look at this. Someone on reddit claims to have been poking around in bungie's source code. Possible WiiU and pc version?

"Playstation Vita"
"Wii U"

Yup. Enough to confirm that it's fake for me!

Well, at least you'll have mandatory Kinect.

I hate every single rumor about Microsoft's new console.

Does anyone have a 1920x1200 or larger version of that grey and white Destiny wallpaper? Can't find that on the official site.

Currently writing up my thoughts on the reveal. Overall pretty positive, and IMO we got a ton more info than I expected, but I totally understand if people felt burnt.

I think with the press like Jeff saying he wouldn't be surprised to see it at the Sony event says a lot on its own.

I'm still ultra curious how these vehicles are going to factor into this game, they look massive.

Why do I see people mentioning that this game will be similar to Demon's/Dark Souls? What evidence is there to suggest this?

Hm. Well, I suppose we'll have to wait and see. I wouldn't be opposed to seeing Destiny again on Wednesday, this time on a next gen console.

So online only, Hub world and no main menu's means this game pretty much has no lan support/competitive appeal whatsoever huh?

So strange when that was such a big part of what made halo a success.

I wouldn't mind either. It would be big for Sony, too. as again, Jeff said, something like "here's Bungie on our new console!" to the mass market.

I was talking to someone earlier how it seemed more like a teaser of sorts for something later in this month or next anyway.

Well, there's a reason they stopped making halo games, they were kinda tired of it.

Well this isn't Halo.

No it obviously isn't but it is a shooter and locking out competitive play is kinda surprising.

Yeah I can see how that's possible. I think the concept is exciting. Hopefully the game goes to third person in hubs to allow more players on screen. Having hubtown's would be kind of a waste if they aren't lively.

Sorry, what? Why are they linked like that? Don't you need to be online to play SC2 in tournaments? You can have competitive appeal without lan support.

Yeah you're right. I forgot about battlenet. I guess we need to see how the competitive lobby system works out first.

This guy looks straight out of Halo:

Art style wise everything else looks pretty unique and distinct though.

That's the same color palette as ONI Sword Base so I can see where you made the connection.

Yeah, its the same color pallet as ONI, Exodus and the beginning of Long Night of Solace. Its also more than that..its just the way it renders everything..it has that same sort of flat greyish-blue look to everything.

Compare:

And it just kinda feels like a minor engine upgrade.. Kinda like Reach with way better lighting, but where everything still looks a little flat and washed out. That said, it does look like they are pushing the draw distance also.

the real time of day makes it vastly superior to reach. just look at the lighting on the sphere and the shadows. pretty sweet

No doubt it looks better, but there is still somehing about the way the engine renders lighting and colors, geometry, etc. that makes it look distinctly like reach.

It was debunked. Its "real", but its part of all Activision game pages source code apparently.

Also, I think a big part of this reveal was just getting the name out there. Give Bungie some publicity, let the public know about Destiny, let retailers and other sites promote it, etc. I said it earlier in this thread, but Destiny didn't officially exist until just this last week, and today was Bungie's way of bringing it to the public so everybody knows what their next big project is.

I think we'll have plenty more information headed out way in the coming weeks/months, especially with the next gen console announcements and Destiny's ties to those.

You do, and it's one of the most stupid things ever. Several matches have gotten ruined by disconnects and lag.

Blizzards gotten a ton of shit for it. Deservedly so

I love the look.

It doesn't look as technically amazing as Halo 4 or Killzone 2/3 but that art design is just so beautiful. I can't wait for it.

Yeah, definitely. I think it was a mistake to call everyone out there and what seemed gimped as I mentioned earlier. But there was the point of just announcing it and getting that across.

Definitely. I don't know if it was confirmed, but I hope they're at GDC as well.

I kinda feel like it looks like more than a minor engine upgrade. The first picture you post with the guy in a suit looks like something from halo 4 imo. I mean just compare him to the brute model in your reach picture.

The short snippets of in game stuff we saw in the vidoc looked pretty impressive for current gen imo, much closer to halo 4 visuals than reach. And it'll be really impressive if they manage to keep the things that they did better than halo 4 ( textures, landscapes and number of enemies at a time )

When was the most recent high profile case of that happening?

I don't really know, haven't followed pro stracraft 2 in a while. But go look up dimaga vs mvp for an example of how it can ruin a great series

There was also the time where mlg lost internet and all the sc2 pros had to sit around twidling their thumbs while the lan enabled games could continue on.

There's simply no excuse for making a multiplayer game with highly competitive play in mind, and then not have LAN support. It's simply a result of trying to reduce priacy at the cost of the honest consumer.

So wait if this does indeed become a 2014 title, the game would have a 5 year development cycle?

When did this game start development? 2009?

I always get confused on when you start counting actual development, like what contitutes "actual development"? pre pre production where its a bunch brainstorming and writing down ideas on napkins and what not, doesn't really count IMO, cause the game most likely hasn't even got close to being greenlit a lot of times at that phase. I'm sure they weren't doing much more than that in early 2009.

I think actual development should be when you have official artwork in place and your start creating assets based on that in engine.

So finally getting around to reading the Kotaku article and this without a doubt sounds awesome. It's ambitious as hell though. However if they can pull it off it will be amazing to see.

The Big "Always Online" Rule, No Subscriptions, Social Interactions
Requiring a persistent Internet connection is not a new concept. It's also not exactly a favorable one, either, as we've seen with Diablo III. But Bungie managed to explain their need to be constantly connected.

In Destiny you live in a persistent world. It's constantly being affected by not just the passage of time, but by other players. As you enter certain areas of the game, the server will register which of these are public domains/combat areas. If you stumble into one, it'll automatically, and invisibly, search for another gamer to matchmake you with. Kind of like Journey, except the server will download all of that player's customized gear (which potentially makes up millions of unique, personalized characters). So as you play, the server should seamlessly integrate another player into your game. As you're scouting a safe path around the dangerous Cabal, for instance, you might bump into another player. So even though you're playing out your personal story, a lot of your time is spent in shared adventures. And even if you don't want to go on a quest with another player, you can watch other players carrying out their own missions together, right there in your game.

This is still your personalized story. You still have control. But it's constantly impacted by other players (in what way exactly, we don't know yet), and by events both planned and spontaneous. Kind of like what they do in MMOs—except Bungie says they have no plans to charge you a subscription fee. The game, required Internet connection and all, is built for social and cooperative play. But that doesn't necessarily mean Bungie is trying to jam-pack as many players into your experience as possible to say, hey, look how cool it is that this world is so big and full of people. They specified that the amount of players you see in your game is "design-controlled."

This kind of social interaction in console gaming is the way of the future, Bungie said.

Honestly, it was so they'd all write stories on it. The amount of coverage Destiny had gotten today is substantial, and a lot of that is because they reached out to so many media outlets.

And they are going to be there; Joe Staten is giving a presentation about building their new world and I imagine the game will get some run there as well.

I'll miss LAN play for sure if it's gone, but if it's a sacrifice that needs to be made to create the game that destiny could be, well then, I'll deal with having everyone on the internet at my next LAN.

We'll see what happens with competetitve/MLG stuff, but the entire competitive FPS area is so damn stagnant, and the audience is so small, I won't miss it.

Looks beautiful.

I hope they flesh out the lore more. I want to know a lot about the world, races, and history of this new universe. Are they going to be releasing a book or some such alongside the game to explain its backdrop? Is there anything available online like a character or world bio?

Not sure if this was posted, but I thought this Twitter exchange between Jonathan Blow and Bungie lead engineer Brian Sharp was really interesting:

Jonathan Blow said:
Am I the only person wondering why Bungie made its Big Announcement such a small announcement?

Brian Sharp said:
you mean why we didn't show everything? It was big in the sense of e.g. press attendance.

Jonathan Blow said:
learn something new about the game. As I assume most people were.

Brian Sharp said:
depends what you wanted, maybe. I was surprised by how much fiction we covered - races, player classes, backstory, locations.

I'm a little confused about what he (Bungie Guy) believes they revealed today.
