Kotaku Rumor: PS4 out in November, control with your phone/tablet, maybe $429/529

That method proved quite costly to the 3DS. I find it more likely that yields will determine price.

I'm not advocating or defending anyone's business practices, but if the market is willing to pay for it, they will do it. If the market crucifies you, than you will beckon to its will. I expect $400 honestly.

Realistically how can Sony justify charging so much? They probably aren't using anything "new" or "revolutionary" to justify such a high price compared to the ps3 using Bluray and the cell processor. I just can't see the console costing more than 450 max.

What about their eye thing? it has to be expensive as it is new and had -probably- cost a lot in RD. Is this a WiiU gamepad situation?

Well it is a new console, not saying thats justification but its the new ps3 the succesor to the 599 ps3. Which automatically gets the benefit on name alone.

Quite.
I suspect Sony already have a target price and I actually think it isn't tied to the Durango's price. Price will come tomorrow.

They weren't exactly responsive to the PS3 price so am not buying into this idea.

I think Sony should launch PS4 for Christmas worldwide, (e.g not just Japan and everywhere else next year.)

Pay for online is not great and seem like a turnaround from their current model.

The price is too high.

Price is only going to come tomorrow if it is fucking DREADFUL and Sony needs the shock to wear off over the next six months. They already tried the PRICE BOMB at E3 with PS3 and look how that did.

The good news is that if the price isn't unveiled, a bunch of people will look silly! Like suggesting the Virtual Boy has outsold the Wii u. LOL.

How about we wait until tomorrow to see if the price is justified :/
If they have the right launch titles they might be justified charging more.

I should be able to get it for free because I can play the same exact game on PC online for free. Why would I pay for a version of game that doesn't allow me access to half it's features unless I pay more?

It'd be like if they made a new type of DVD player that only lets me watch half the movie unless I pay $50 a year to watch full movies.
If this comes to pass and you're that upset about paying $50 a year maybe you should get a PC. I don't think people are going to leave Sony in massive droves though, I imagine most people will complain but then pay up.

Than why not make it optional? This is another thing I hate about the xbox, as it sounds they're going all in on the kinect. So now if Sony is justifying this price on the eye, what about the nextbox and they're putting kinect in? Also the big 3 game companies are selling their consoles on GIMMICKS. A touch pad and 2 cameras... this stuff is garbage, give me games. I may just take that money and invest in a new graphics card, because the handful of console exclusives that are actual games are not worth the huge price tags and pay to play games.

Actually, I think he makes a few good points. Gamers act like they should get everything for free. Never see such a group of people so against supporting a hobby they enjoy.

First they came with new maps, and I didn't speak out because this was the equivalent of PC gaming's expansion packs.

Then they came with DLC-exclusive costumes and weapons, but I didn't speak out because I never bought frivolous swag.

Then they came out with on-disc DLC, and I didn't speak out because I never supported anything tained with on-disc DLC.

Then they came out with pay-walls for other subscription services we already paid for, and I didn't speak out because the Xbox 360 had been boxed up for years.

Then they came for multi-player, and now there is no one left to speak out.

Bear in mind that $599 was awful when it comes a year late, but if they were first to market I'll bet they would clean up at that price.

Exactly, if people are willing to pay that much for that, then that will be a given as the starting price point for the consoles.

This is very true and with the added inflation on top of that. I always found it funny when people posted that the Wii U was too pricey. Wait till tomorrow. lol

I expect the basic features that are already available for free on PS3 and PSV to remain free: playing online, access to non-Sony services (Netflix, etc.), basic chat functionality, and so on. However, I expect all (seemingly bandwidth intensive) features to be locked behind the PS+ pay wall, much like auto-downloading: the rumored spectator mode, streaming games, and so on.

As a PS3 and Vita owner (chances are you're probably not in the 2nd category), I have a vested interest in Sony's ecosystem.

I know as a dedicated gamer that wants to see them not only survive this next generation but thrive, Sony needs to be far more adept at generating revenue than they have been in the past in order to fix their marketing, keep their first-party studios afloat and counter the aggressive subsidized purchase plans Microsoft will be rolling out for Durango this fall.

Microsoft generates over a half-billion dollars in revenue in LIVE subscriptions annually (I'm actually low-balling that number - it's probably well over that). This is revenue Sony could sorely benefit from having.

Frankly, I would argue that YOU have no interesting in supporting Sony by saying they shouldn't charge for online. Because instead of showing an appreciation for Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Polyphony and Sony's rich development culture and IPs, you're only coming across as being cheap because you don't want to cough up the equivalent of one game purchase/year to support their online infrastructure.

(Having an additional revenue stream in place could also help to stave off attacks like the one that took their entire network offline for a month and compromised thousands of accounts back in 2011.)

Tomorrow will be an interesting day.

Actually, I think he makes a few good points. Gamers act like they should get everything for free. Never see such a group of people so against supporting a hobby they enjoy.

I've put thousands and thousands and more thousands of euros into gaming over the past 20 years.

I support it plenty, I'm used to being treated with respect by the people I support though.
If sony goes under (I'm humoring you here, I hope you understand that) it'll be because the games aren't there and not enough people buy one, not because they didn't nickle and dime the userbase harder than the competition.

There is nothing you get for free here ok?
You pay for the console to the people who make the console
You pay for the games to the people who make the games (and the console maker takes a cut of that too)
You pay for the bandwidth to your ISP.

If you think paying for a game once isn't enough and that playing online 'for free' (seriously, how ridiculous is that statement, it's painful to even type it) is freeloading or something then you are just as bad as the poster you are defending.

That is the last word I'll say on this, I already feel dirty for even dignifying it.

Well if you ask me, I would totally be for it being optional. But people won't buy it if it's optional, so thery are going to force it on us.

It's just my guess, and I hope I'm wrong, but other than that I don't see how they can honestly justify the price.

The $350 bundle is great.

Great and delusional.

Dude it's a multibillion dollar industry, not collecting Latvian silver coins from the 1700s.

The market is healthy and mature enough to correct and adjust itself, they don't need our charity...

At the end of the day that 5 is a MASSIVE number to the average consumer. Even for myself as a massive sony fan, I just can't get behind them again if they choose to launch their console at this price. The difference will not be large enough especially on the big games that matter- Madden, Call of Duty, Battlefield, etc. the average consumer will go for the cheaper one, especially when they technology is so comparable.

If you spend thousands of dollars on gaming then an extra $50 a year shouldnt kill you.

Since the Dual Shock 4 seems to have built in move functionality it only makes sense that they would pack in a PSEye 2.0 in every box.

With Sony going 2 billion in the red with PS3. Yea it will correct itself with PS4.

I don't buy this price point. It may end up being correct but I doubt even Sony has a final number. Competition helps determine price- unless you throw bluray in before you manufacture it for cheap...

Don't even see where they are claiming price points will be revealed tomorrow.
Kotaku isn't. Kevin Dent is but I still find the prospect of knowing that level of detail so far in advance to be dubious at best.

Y2Kev summed it up best. If we hear about pricing tomorrow, it's not going to be good news and it'll be solely to get that monkey off their back now so they can focus on hype, marketing, features and games going forward.

Ah if that's the case, that would be pretty stupid.

I feel the name alone can't justify the price. Xbox has really taken away their ability to do that.

This is the biggest corporate induced consumer guilt trip I've ever witnessed.
Incredible.

Really disgusting.

if they have what I want and I'm free to make the determination how much that's worth to me anyone who wants to denigrate me for making a value judgement can go ahead and get fucked.

But my point is, Microsoft is packing in Kinect 2.0... so my point is at a lower price point, microsoft has the same amount of "bonus stuff" if you will. This is of course assuming the nextbox is cheaper. If they're both that price, Sony will do fine... but you can count me out at these price points, it's just become entirely too much.

Why would Sony announce the price of there console 8 months prior to release and more importantly without knowing MSFT pricing model and potential subscription model?

That was due to monumental business stupidity, not due to shifts in the markets or unpredicted disruption from new competitors.

The massive PS3 shaped financial hole they dug for themselves was due to the PS3 costing far, far too much to manufacturer. And the enormous sums they spent (wasted) on R&D for Cell. The losses per PS3 sold was far higher than could be clawed back by a typical attach rate of software.

The general business model was fine - it saw great results for them in the past. But the sheer cost of the PS3 fucked them. As long as the price point is acceptable to the consumer and gives Sony a slither of margin, the PS3 financial crisis won't happen again. Even the Vita is unlikely to have lost them much, if any, money. Just not made any.

The camera is nothing new, pretty much confirmed with the first controller leak
Launching this year is obvious and a must
Charging for "most" online features is what they do now so no shocker. Everyone is just assuming it's for online play.
The SKU is just shit anyways, reminds me of a wrestling rumor. It's the plan right now but things can change anytime! So why even spread the rumor? lol

Thanks for the history recap?

Revealing pricing tomorrow seems absolutely idiotic.

That is your E3 bombshell.

You announce release window tomorrow.

You only announce pricing tomorrow if you have something the competitor can in no way match.

Oh I hope they release on the same day. It would be too delicious. Gauntlets thrown down all over the place.

1) doubt it
2) if they launch in nov they probably wont be first to market
