Gamestop: We don't have enough to fill pre-orders!

GameStop PS3 Shortage Update

Only sixty percent of pre-orders for Sony's new system will be fulfilled at launch nationwide.
By GameSpy Staff | Nov. 13, 2006

The PlayStation 3 US launch is starting to look even messier than before. We've just been informed by a GameStop representative that they will only be receiving enough PS3 units to fulfill sixty percent of the pre-orders they sold last month. As we reported earlier today, GameStop and its EB Games retail outlets will be receiving fewer PS3s than expected because an undisclosed number of PS3s originally slated to go to the US are being redirected to Japan due to the high demand there.

This means that forty percent of the people who pre-ordered a PS3 from either GameStop or EB Games will be out of luck come November 17. To make matters worse, there are not enough 60GB PS3s to go around for the sixty percent who will receive systems. This means that a number of people will have to settle for the 20GB system instead. There is a bit of good news though: GameStop expects to get more units in by Christmas. Meanwhile, Toys "R" Us has confirmed that it will have enough units to fulfill all of its PS3 pre-orders.

Wow. Seriously **** Sony.

I had Dark1x setup for his PS3 and look at this shit. I'm with everyone else who hopes this ****s them in the long run. Way to change your mind FOUR DAYS before the launch.

Yeah. Talk to someone about it.

I just dont get that part. Diverting units to Japan form the NA stock? Wouldn't those units had to have been shipped awhile ago? Meaning sony, knew about this 2-3 weeks ago right? They had to, they didn't stop a boat halfway here and pull units off it :p

They diverted units to keep the face in Japan. Nintendo's coming.

I felt like this a couple weeks ago with the Best Buy preorder..... but I didnt wait outside all night for this garbage... a damn shame sony.... a damn shame

There could be truth to this. There's really no need to send them to the US, since so many wise GAFfers tell us that nobody switches to something else when they want a Playstation, they just wait it out.

well, they sure as hell didnt just figure this out today, and waiting until 4 days before is complete crap. At the very least, when my GS did pre's, 5 guys were waitng from about 5am until the store opened. At the time we felt dumb for showing up so early when we could have come 10 minuites prior to opening. I guess we are all geniuses now :p I;m glad that all the people were gmers and they will all likely still get one

It doesn't matter how long people are willing to wait. That's still fewer units on the November NPD.

The "diverting more units to Japan because of unexpected demand" story is almost certainly BS.

Their production numbers are probably just coming in even lower than projected, which is not at all surprising.

Yup. Any units being sold this weekend have been in this country for a little while now (at least I would hope so.) There's no way they are sending units back to Japan.

Except for the fact that GS/EB seems to be the only retailer announcing shortages, based on preorders from a month ago. Meanwhile you've got TRU specifically announcing that they're good for their preorders - it's almost like they might be thumbing their nose at GS/EB for poor planning.

ipothetical theories of mine:

1- diverting them away from GS and sending them to "normal" stores like BB, WM and Target

2- splitting a chunk of the shippment for 1 week or 2 week for 2nd chances or to apear that their are refilling shelves more ofthen (but are just slippiting the quantitiy)

ok I didnt buy it, just making sure it was impossible anyway. This should be fun whne everyone shows and people start getting pissed. All those joke I kept making about bringing a retractable club... not jokes anymore :/
There is most certainly going to be some ugly stories... legendary perhaps.

So my Software Etc./ GS is getting eight 60 GB units, and I am number seven on the sixteen person reserve list. Yes! Hopefully we don't get any announcements like ".2 percent of reserves will be filled before 2008." :)

Sony is directly responsible for this in the end but EBgames is the one that gets to eat all the flak. If you work at an EBgames you aren't even supposed to bash sony for this despite the issue being their fault.

EB really should have looked at the minimum possible shipment of systems and divided that by 3. Just to be safe. They could then have had a 5 dollar down waiting list that WOULDN'T guaruntee you a system where they'd keep 20 more people and once final numbers came out they'd just keep phoning down the list offering 200 down for a system.

Looks like they'll get burned severly by PS3 stuff just like the 360 last year, my local EB still has unsold collectors edition perfect dark boxes. The Wii should push them into breaking even, the less disgruntled custumers will just buy it instead and get 3 games and a second controller for the same price as a PS3.

I am the first one after the cut off point at my store so I am guaranteed first in line for the 2nd shipment...

I'm not too upset about it though, cause I think the PS3's launch lineup is pretty underwhelming, and I will have my 360 and Wii to tide me over until I finally get my PS3.

That's seriously ****tarded. Redirecting PS3s to Japan? Too little too late dumbasses.

Redirecting to Japan? I thought it was the European launch quota, being handled by local exporters?

Sucks to be a US PS3 hopeful by the looks of it. Friday is going to be ugly :(

Edit: what's the situation going to be like for later shipments I wonder? Relaunch after releaunch until walk-in sales are possible? The demand is going to be insane once people catch the "omg rare must have one" fever, especially with the ebay shenanigans.

Not really. GS/EB is the only store that does full pre-orders. I'm sure Toys'R'Us earmarked 60% of their PS3 shipments to pre-orders and kept the rest for launch day first come first serve, I remember reading that somewhere. So even if their shipment numbers were cut, they're still able to fulfill their preorders. Whereas with GS/EB 100% of the expected shipment went to preorders, so ANY drop would affect them.

So sure, you could construe this as poor planning on EB/GS part, but the fact remains that Sony told them to expect a certain amount, and now they're reneging on that. Plain and simple. And this DOES point to a decrease in launch numbers, maybe as high as a 40% decrease across the board, which would just be... insanity.

I'm curious to see if retail stores are getting shorted as well.

Folks who pre-ordered at Toys R Us, did any of you get a sense of how many pre-orders your stores took?

Someone suggested that more higher profile retail stores (your Best Buy's, Circuit City's, and TRU's) are not getting shorted... would EB/GS have taken more reservations that these stores are going to get units/pre-orders?

And as for the person who made the comment "and we aren't suppose to bash Sony" I know this comes as a surprise, but a retail salesperson in ANY retail store isn't suppose to bash ANY company. Of course when it comes to VG, salespeople seem to regularly forget that.

IIRC, my GS got 28 X360's last year. This year they are getting 8-10 PS3's. If Sony is still shipping 400K and MS sold just a little less than this last year, where are all the other PS3 systems going?

EDIT:
According to the NDP Group, North American sales [of Xbox 360] totaled 326,000 units in November [of 2005].

EDIT:

My guess would be Walmart, Target, Circuit City, and Best Buy.

I suppose its also possible that they are holding some of them back so that they can have a steady (albeit limited) supply of systems in stores from week to week as opposed to just dropping 2 big shipments. Maybe 200,000 on day 1 and then another 200,000 units every 7-10 days until the end of the year? One problem with 2 big shipments is that when they run out people will just kind of give up looking for a PS3 this year. And who knows, maybe some of them will buy another system now (perhaps the Wii since its relatively cheap) and buy the PS3 later. If you have multiple shipments it gives folks some hope so they will keep checking with the stores and they won't give up so easily.

This may have been discussed but has anyone heard this from 1up

UPDATE: Sources from Gamestop management confirmed that 60% of the retail outlet's day one PS3 unit allocation will be the 20 gig HDD version. It was previously expected that the 60 gig HDD version would be the more prominent SKU at retail. Our source said to expect to see retail employees begin pushing the 20 gig version of the console. Though, with the expected shortages, pushing any version of Sony's PS3 shouldn't prove too difficult.
Weird, this seems to go against what Ive heard.

I'll be curious to see how early people start lining up. I really really don't want to do it, but if it doesn't seem TOO bad, I might roll up later in the evening and see what's happening. The only thing that would help is the fact that I've just picked up Lumines II and know that a Lumines session can last for HOURS. Two or three really good Lumines sessions (spread across my TWO PSPs) would probably last me. The only issue the cold, which might deter me...

Is there any way to check how many units stores around you are scheduled to get? If it seems like a decent number, I may give it a shot.

It is going to be in the 30's here with a slight chance of rain. NO WAY.

No I didn't realize any local circuit city was doing a midnight launch around here. Which one are you referring to?

EDIT: Oh shit just checked the website Rockville store..hmm thanks for the heads up. How early do you think folks will start camping there? I am tempted to swing by there after work... let's see I'd get there about 6.... vouchers handed out at 10... could go home catch a nap then come back at midnight....

Didn't realize both you and Vark are local, I'm in Gaithersburg myself. Darien, which EB/GS store do you frequent?

Well I don't buy my games from EB/GS anymore, but in this case earlier this year they opened up a EB in the Germantown Commons shopping center. It's just down the street my job and my home.
