Also, again, I really doubt NSMBU sells 2M long term without being given away for free.

It really depends on how the WiiU performs. If the WiiU reaches 10M LTD, then NSMBU should reach 2M with some room to spare. If the WiiU only sells 5M, then yeah - NSMBU probably won't make it.

So does anyone think Sony should work to distance themselves from the Otaku crowd? They seem attached at the hip, but it feels like it's limiting their system's appeal these days -- sort of like comic books being limited in the US by their rabid nerd base.

This has its advantages, obviously. You can rely on your nerd base. But it also limits the potential for growth, because general consumers tend to distance themselves from such cultures and crowds.

I could also be completely wrong. Maybe Otaku are more respected in Japan than the comic book nerd-type is in the US. This was just a thought, and not a fully formed idea (which is why I'm asking).

I think there are two different things going on here with regards to Sony, and they're not related as closely as you might think:

1) Sony has lost a lot of ground in Japan as far as hardware and software sales go, on both their console and handheld platforms

2) Sony still has strong and loyal support from developers/publishers of "otaku" games, and those games tend to do well (for what they are) on any platform they're exclusive to regardless of userbase

Point 2 does not in any meaningful way impact Point 1 imo. It could create an increasingly negative view in the long term, from mainstream audiences, but if it does it would be because there is nothing but those games on the platforms. Trying to artificially distance themselves from that audience is not going to magically get them more mainstream games either, in fact it will likely get them nothing at all.

I see Point 2 as a consequence of Point 1. Much like how we saw many arcade-perfect ports and shmups sort of thrive on the Dreamcast even after the main market abandoned the system, and we saw shmups continue on to the Xbox360 in Japan as well. Niche stuff with a very hardcore fanbase gravitates towards platforms where they are catered to, regardless of how weak that platform is. That's all that's happening here I feel. Removing that segment doesn't make the platform stronger.

it's gonna be awesome tomorrow.

no matter what, one side will be in tears. Personally, I don't really give a shit who it is so long as I see some working of dem tear glands.

I don't see why someone would be in tears over Vita's sales considering it's been out for over a year, unless you are talking about Wii U sales than it most certainly will be interesting to see how low it can go.

Anyone who's ever cried over sales of a video game console should reassess their lives.

WIU | 9.633

But honestly all it takes is one look at Wii U's release schedule and sales all over the world to not be extremely confident right now. I'm sure things will pick up somewhat somewhat months from now, but it honestly astounds me Nintendo is blowing the huge advantage of a 1 year lead

At the very least, the system's getting some decent exclusive games this month, with Game and Wario and Dragon Quest X in Japan and Lego City Undercover and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate in America/Europe. So it will get a decent bump.

True. Being a fan of theirs is hard when they pull so many boneheaded moves. But at the end of the day, it's Nintendo. They do what they do.

The ball's in their court, and they have but a few months to turn things around

Wii U's launch is like the worst of the DS, Wii, and N64 launch periods combined.

It has the initial system seller of the DS (None/old ass games played on BC)

It has the post release line up of the N64. (One game every three months, two heavy hitters a year.

It has the port excuses of the Wii. What you don't like last gen games/the last gen games you want we "can't figure out a way to use that marvelous new controller."

Wii U wishes it had the Launch period lineup of GCN (Super Smash Bros. Melee and Pikmin in a month? Very nice) The launch title of the Wii or N64 (Wii Sports or Super Mario Bros. 64) or hell, even the third party ports that the GBA had!

So what you're saying is that everything's A-Okay in Nintendo land.

On the bright side it's no Wii Sports but Nintendo land, is a pretty damn good selling launch game. This is the one thing that will make Wii U worthwhile for Nintendo with the fact that even if the Wii U completely fails hardware wise, they can get some great software sales out of it.

There has been a single retail game for the Wii U since December in Japan, and no retail games since December in America. That's a hell of a tough sell. Things will get better once the games come out, and that's starting this month.

Nintendoland should be Wii Sports. It's in fact a better demo of the system's strong point.

Nintendo completely failed getting this message out though. No Wii like tuperware parties, horrible advertising, complete failure to market it last holiday, and no games to bolster it.

They probably should have launched With a Skyward Sword up port and Smash 4.

Lol wat?

The only games i am seeing are Monster Hunter 3U and Lego for EU and USA.Dont tell me that you expect these games to sell hardware....they will be lucky to even chart.

For Japan there is Wario and DQX.I am not sure how good an online game that has already a Wii version will do.Wario at this point seems to have low pre-orders.Those games will give WiiU a little jump but nothing too big.The point is that after those game there is only Revelations HD that coming also to PS3/360.The next game release is summer or September....

Well, The Amazing Spider-man just came out for the Wii U. Though, it's hard to believe that Wheel of Fortune was one of the last retail games released for the Wii U in America. Crazy stuff.

I could see Undercover being a million seller over time. But at least there will be games coming out. Also, between now and September, they have to put out Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, Game and Wario (America/Europe), Wii Fit U, and Wii Party U. None of them (except maybe? Wii Fit U) are going to be big, but it's not as though nothing's there.

I hope to god they at least have Mario Kart ready for christmas.

3D Mario and Smash if we're lucky.

The new Mario Kart 7, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Smash Bros. Melee.

I'm pretty sure that Nintendo will do anything to ensure that the Mario games come out this year, even if it means gutting most of the planned features and content. They're going to need it.

I know this isn't arm chair quaterbacking the Wii U launch but I really think I've found the game they should have had ready for it.

Super Smash Bros. Melee HD.
