SimCity |OT| It's not the simulation or city that matter, it's <parameter: string>

I cannot express how horrible the whole way they've structured the always-live nature of this game is. They could have implemented some kind of online/offline syncing of cities/regions so that, at the worst, in cases in which the servers are down or internet is down, you can play in a region with "saved" versions of the other cities and, when things come back on line, sync your changes with the other cities' changes. You can't do ANYTHING while these servers are convulsing and frothing at the mouth. I haven't even been able to run the tutorial. It's a joke.

Simcity 4 is still fantastic, I was playing it last night. If you do get it then make sure you head over to Simtropolis and at a minimum download the NAM mod, it fixes a lot of traffic things and adds a large amount of good stuff to the game. Of course there are thousands of other excellent mods you can get for it too, but the NAM is almost required to truly enjoy all the game has to offer. Also add the single core switch to your shortcut, it solves pretty much all of the crashing problems on modern machines.

I'll buy the new Simcity eventually, but only after they release the Deluxe Game of the Year Gold All Inclusive DLC Edition with Larger City Sizes and Terraforming, and after they have all the bugs and server stuff sorted out. I've waited this long for a new Simcity game, I can wait a bit longer until it's ready for me. In the meantime, Simcity 4 is just as awesome as it has been for the past ten years.

Regarding 4 - thanks. I'll check into it. I played SO much 2000. I loved how easy it was to dive in and experiment. I had so many failed cities, so many wasted attempts, but they were all built upon experimentation and tinkering. I owned 3000, but never really played it much. It sounds like 4 is the game I want. With an overhaul fix and some exciting mods, I imagine it could grow into my SimCity of choice.

And about your bold point - I wish I could say the same, but there are so many things about EA that I just can't behind. This online DRM shit sucks, but I love Diablo 3, so I'd be a hypocrite if I said I won't buy/play games with it. I'll just have to wait and see. It sounds like SimCity 4 will give me MORE than enough enjoyment for a long ass time.

How long did we have to put up with error 37 with Diablo? I can't play at all right now on NA East 1 server. Such a shame.

I was able to play without lag after about 36 hours in Diablo. We're at what, 57 now?

At this point I am betting on the game getting cracked faster than EA fixing their shit.

Wow, looking at these screenshots this is more like Sim suburb. Didn't really follow the development but knew it was coming and was a huge sim city fan right from the first one, but I'm stunned at how small the areas are. How is this even a simulation of a city? I've never seen cities that look like this.

If you're going to trying to make the new SimCity look bad you should'nt put Tropico 4 at $33 next to Tropico 3 at $3.

Considering Tropico 4 is almost the same exact game as Tropico 3.

I managed to get in last night for an hour-ish and managed to raise taxes to offset my terrible design choices for the town. I paid off all my bonds and am going to horde a ton of money and just demolish all the roads/start over when I hit 500k. If I kill the region, will it affect my status or will it just be like wiping the slate clean?

If we can have a few posts without complaining, can someone answer this?

No problem in Europe except for a bug (or a server issue?) at the friends list (I can not see my friends).

So far the game is awesome.

I erased my first city with no malus at all, but it took a while to update the cities status.

North American East 1 is just broken this morning. Cannot load anything in the client at all except a dated friends list that shows two friends online and in menus when they aren't online nor in menus.

BTW, it is very hard to survive without any neighbors. I am playing in the Viridian Woods (2) GAF region and I don't have any neighbors, except for one, who hasn't done anything with his city. Sharing resources is so important in this game...

Also... I don't like resource dependent cities... it seems like you run out of stuff like Coal and Ore so quickly... by the time you have enough money to put up things like the HQ Trade and Mining, most of your resources are gone... I hope they increase resources in a future patch... I shouldn't be running out of coal after 5 years.... :(

In game? If so, the friends list only shows friends that are on THAT server.

lol finally excited to get my hands on this, it defaults me to north american servers, try to switch to Europe West 2 (the only euro server available) and it tells me it's unable to connect to it.

The actual game did seem pretty good in the limited amount of time I had to play it last night. Scaled back in a few ways that hurt, but it's still a Maxis city builder. In 2013 there's just not much in the simulation genre that comes close to that standard.

Once the connection issues get ironed out I will be mixing this in with some Sim 4. I really like the online integration even though I hate the always online nature that has been a small blessing and a curse.

So true. Just sad it takes almost a full day to toss an invite to someone in the region, or the fact that half of us can't even get into the region due to the queue. EA provides the great advice that if one server is busy... join another! Well what if my friends are said server? Are we supposed to just pack up our bags and move to another new server and abandon current cities.

Want this game to work soooooo... bad.

Well I just logged into the US servers then, lovely interface, I name my region, ready to claim this piece of land to build my city and I'm welcomed with : Unable to claim city at this time. Please claim a city again.

Ohhh Deluxe Edition, I love it!!!

Managed to sneak in a good 14hrs worth of game over the last day or so via VPN and I agree 100% with most of the negative commentary here - cities are too small, data is far too ambiguous at times [I'm constantly asked for more housing/industry/storage space, without any meaningful context - where is this regional demand coming from?] and the online servers suck

but

this game does look and sound great

I'm horrible with roads. Always seem to have insane traffic.

My traffic only gets bad when theres a series of fires/crimes and they hold up the traffic. Unfortunately, for me anyway, this usually happens randomly and then fucks up the traffic for a few days in my cities.

I will take a shot of my city later but yeah, I sort of set up my first city as if it was a "baby's first step" like getup. I mean there's hardly any symmetry BUT things work. I royally messed up on my main freeway large road so traffic flow from that is not as efficient as it should be.

I then built a bit of industry and retail mixed in together with homes peppered in and 2 sectors of housing which works nice but I didn't think the zones out at all. I have got it to where my people are happy, I have a little crime but am taking in about 5k an hour and have paid off my bonds. When I left last night I had around 150k and rising when I left last night and will try and milk it to 500k before pulling the plug and demoing all the roads and starting over. It was a good first lesson after not playing this series for years. I like it though.

I have a project that's worth 1/7 of my grade due tomorrow, so I should be thankful the servers are down - but unfortunately I'm enjoying this train wreck almost as much as the game itself.

I was building a road foundation that I thought might work but I haven't been able to get back to it. I had to start thinking about not only my city traffic, but keeping in mind highway traffic in the future.

Does anybody know if there's a way for me to export alloy/plastic from one of my cities to another that's less awkward than gifting it?

Decided to try loading up my city since it's no longer prime time but no luck. Nine in the morning and I still can't load my shit. What the hell.

Latest update:

We are continuing to do everything we can to address the server issues. In the meantime, so that we can give you as good an experience as possible, we are in the process of deploying a hotfix to all servers. This includes various improvements and also disables a few non-critical gameplay features (leaderboards, achievements and region filters). Disabling these features will in no way affect your core gameplay experience.

We will continue to let you know as we have more information. We know it has been said before, but we do appreciate your patience as we complete this latest update. Getting you playing is our absolute highest priority.

At this point, I couldn't care less about my existing cities. Just give me a stable server that I can get on consistently and I'll make my cities there.
