Game looks like it could be a fun ride - I probably would not pay full price for it (Plus, i don't own a Wii U yet), but a year from now? Maybe I'll give it a shot. It seems like the team was really passionate, so hopefully the reviews turn out ok.

I've been gaming for a very long time, and in my old and jaded ways I've learned when a game gets fluctuating scores its never a good sign and the lower scores are usually closer to accutrate.

Regardless, this does not appear to be the AAA title I was hoping for.

Anymore in games media, 10/10/10/10s mean nothing either. These days, the surest way for a game to get universally high scores is to make sure it's a production value thrill ride, and designed to not frustrate reviewers who try to burn through it in a couple of days. It could be a letdown as an actual game.

At any rate, I'd fully expected this game would most likely get mixed reviews. While it's understandable given the lack of Wii U releases, too much pressure has been placed on it. It's still a Lego game. There are aspects of Lego games, if it's anything like the previous ones, that will bore a lot of people or not feel engaging.

Another reason why Pikmin 3 needed to have been out in this window.

I was gonna say, I'm really psyched about anything open world but it's still a Lego game. It still looks and controls like one. There's still mindless collectathons. It looks refined compared to say Batman 2 but still a collectathon.

They gave Skyward Sword a perfect 10.

In LEGO Batman 2 and Lord of the Rings free play missions, there were about six pre-selected characters that you could quickly cycle through with the trigger buttons, but you could still access the full character roster with some brief loading. In the open world portions, you just had access to the full character roster, so you could change into any character at any time, but there would be a bit of loading.

EDGE are best trusted reviewers :p

A 5 means it got killed yah

Edge also gave Alien CM a 5, which is hyperinflation at its most deadly. The days of Edge-as-Gospel passed some time ago. Videogame journalism is such a dismal swamp that being better than most counts for little.

High profile game from a big budget, big selling 'core' franchise? That's enough for a default 8 from many. You have to be Resident Evil 6 bad to slump to a 70% average, whereas a comparatively dismal effort in film would be lucky to scrape 40. Gamers in general are incapable of being objective (see some of the whining surrounding a few less than sycophantic God of War reviews for a recent example) so I suppose it stands to reason than reviewers will struggle in the same way unless prodded.

Unfortunately, the gamers who'll complain about reviews get bitten in the balls when one of these default-8s ends up being a disappointing experience...if, for instance, Assassin's Creed III had landed mostly sixes and sevens pre-release, people would have been baying for blood (despite not having played the thing) yet form a consensus that it's a flawed (if hardly awful in the grand scheme of things) frustrating experience after the event. This happens time and time again.

well it can't really save the Wii U by getting 5 on a 10 scale but I'll see what GiantBomb has to say
I can't believe I just said that cringe

I don't think Eurogamer is right. The game won't have a big impact... unless I'm wrongly reading the trend and the game takes off after release like Wii Music or Just Dance.

A 5 from Edge doesn't bode well. I have to read the review to see what it is that Edge doesn't like about the game. Then again, good or bad reviews never had me running to the store to buy a game anyway.

Edge gave LEGO Lord of the Rings a 6, and was the lowest review of the game on Metacritic. LEGO LotR was probably my least favorite LEGO game, but they gave LEGO Indy a 6, and described LEGO Batman as "Too brainless for adults, and increasingly too frustrating and needlessly obtuse for children".

I'm not sure that Edge can be trusted to review the LEGO series objectively.

I am downloading this shit from eShop at Midnight and after playing it an hour will return to the eShop and give it a 5 star rating to match Edge... that is how I do :3

I remember ZombiU getting battered by early reviews but I ended up loving the hell out of that game (I actively tried to cancel my pre-order after the first two reviews but it was already processing).

What were the criticisms from the Edge review?

you may have a point there

In all truthfulness, I never understood why Edge was highly regarded in the first place. I've followed their reviews since 2000 or so, and they've never seemed fundamentally better or more reliable than anyone.

It's like how some people still wait on Famitsu with baited breath, when it's been clear they are not special, and really never have been.

The truth is that whether or not games media ends up agreeing on a particular item is arbitrary. It's all just people's opinions, and the circumstances under which games are reviewed are generally poor. They're not movies that a critic goes and can sit through in 90 minutes.

Of course, maybe that's why cinematic experience games get such nice reviews these days...

I love Edge, but the idea of having an institutional voice at this point is pretty strange. Especially when their reviews are so distinct and often contrary to most publications.

To be fair, I like Edge for the articles. But can't take their reviews seriously. That institutional voice bothers me. As if they're trying to sound inflated in importance, as the "publication of record". Not identifying individual reviewers is a bad idea, just as not identifying individual movie critics would be a bad idea. People are unique.

For instance: it seems clear Edge never likes Lego games. Have all the Lego games been reviewed by the same guy? Who is it?

reading the bit about mario kart double dash the baby park was not just a lazy track

i remeber thoose as the best fun and items everywhere like bowsers giant giant shell like a pinball

I guess I'm the only one that enjoyed the other Double Dash tracks more than Baby Park. I was never a big fan of that track.
