Oh and haha employees leaving Halo for CoD. Must be tough being 343i when the foundation of Halo was built years ago only to be flipped 360 degrees, now classic Halo is infinity.

He came from CoD. It was always my understanding he was more of a contract worker than someone who would stay long term, but I could be wrong.

Either way, kinda shitty.

Yes, that's what matters in a shooter. 60 frames. Nothing else.
He said it's going to keep feeling better, not that it's the only thing that matters, and I agree with him. After playing CoD, every other FPS with ADS and a similar/same control scheme feels sluggish as hell. Could not get into BF Bad Company for that very reason.

Ok.
He think back on a collection of emails that scared some people on the team.

And the Internet. Oh man, the Internet. When will certain developers learn to ignore the Internet? Stop reading the forums, you’ll give yourself and ulcer.

And then he smiles a bit. He thinks about the other day when someone asked him “Why aren’t you freaking out? You should be freaking out.”
Well, I see that both parties seem to be at fault here:
Weapons or AI? The level design needs a bit of work, sure, but the core mechanics are…

He’s cut off. The same weapon designer who wasn’t willing to allow other designers to work on his weapons are now calling out problems with level design gameplay.

Must have struck a nerve.

He admits there are some issues, but he stresses that this area has been tested with focus groups and is consistently high scoring. He also brings up that this level has many other issues and that focusing on an area that is high scoring is bad use of the level designers time. There are more pressing issues that need to be resolved first.

There’s a lot of back and fourth. Both of their bosses are also here, interjecting what they think should be done next. Suddenly, it’s open season on the level design, which he must now defend, but his boss and the weapons designer aren’t having it.

“In the previous game, the level design would have handled this! And I know how easy it is to change this…”

eeeeeeeeee. More highly charged emotional arguments attempting to assault a perfectly reasonable and logical response. They heard him as saying “I don’t want to do this,” when what he plainly said was “Doing this is a poor use of time and inefficient based on my many years of experience doing this very thing.”

The other designers smell blood in the water. The emotional echoes carry forward into more discussions, each designer ready to jump in and start punching and kicking with fists and feet of design theory and “On the last game I worked on…”

He’s having none of it. It’s no use. He simply listens to everyone and waits for them to cool down. He knows that most of what is being said can’t be addressed anyway. He answers with terse responses, as anything more is liable to open up in long winded discussions where other, apparently more experienced designers tell him he hasn’t a clue on what he’s talking about.

He thinks about the lake he ran past not more than a half hour ago. He thinks about all the games he’s made that have sold more than this one, and that were more popular. He wonders why people don’t listen as much as they should.
GAF gets called out :LOL
He goes back to work and finishes out the day at his desk, well past midnight. As a fun diversion and to maintain sanity, he spends an hour or so working on a system that decides where the design team will go to lunch. It’s done purely for fun and as a creative exercise. Something to change things up a bit.

He imagines people on forums taking this out of context and hating him for creating his lunch picker but he knows others will appreciate the lighthearted intention. He decides to post online about it and never look back. He only cares about the people who see the fun in it, not the people that will always and inevitably attempt to paint others in a negative light. Or “Haters” as they are often called.

So the lead campaign designer for Halo 4 developed Nazi Zombies for CoD...and now he's at Infinity Ward starting today.

So, there's that.
First I thought I should have been worried about the campaign, then I read his favorite Halo moment and I was excited. The campaign did not disappoint me, but it felt very enclosed. I am not solely blaming him but his CoD background may be a reason for it.

Should be on in about 20 minutes, Fyrewulff, if you'd still like to test that thing with your stream.

Goddamnit.

I need to put a cage over my bed or something and lock it so I can't be drawn into it. Downside of working long stretches then sitting next to your bed to use the computer..

So, I ran into a kind of weird bug in CTF the other day.

I'm running the flag back to my base, about to cap it. I step onto the capture plate and for a split second see the flag disappear from my hand as it's about to be capped. At that exact moment, as the flag leaves my hand but before it's captured and we get the point for it, a guy on the other team quits and we go to a black screen. We come back and the flag is gone, I'm standign over the capture plate holding the weapons I had before, same score as before. Turns out the flag respawned back at their base but it didn't have a waypoint over it until someone picked it up again. I rage about not getting my point, game continues, we win. It was weird.

I have a clip of the shenanigans in my file share if anyone cares.

Second of all, it's a shitty thing to write and post publicly.

Being afraid to tell your coworkers you've improved upon their work. LOL

It's like he wrote a glorified livejournal fanfic where of COURSE he's the one who is perfect and mature and above everyone else...

...but then goes and writes that trite gossip piece. I don't know, it just seems like an incredibly unprofessional move to pull by calling out individuals at a game studio, the studio hierarchy, etc.

Well, what's the point of being right if nobody knows you're right, right?

I actually thought that it was an interesting read.

though admittedly that may just be because I'm rather bored

Guys, back in the days I loved playing Halo: Combat Evolved either with LAN or online multiplayer on the Xbox. I bought Halo 2 and weren't the biggest fan and then skipped Halo 3, Halo: Wars, Halo 3: ODST and now Halo 4. I bought the novels but I couldn't get myself into the universe or story-telling.

I haven't subscribed to Xbox Live for years but I got 2 weeks free Gold subscription with my Tomb Raider copy and would like to try out a great online game, preferably a shooter - also, I absolutely love MAG on PlayStation 3.

I see the 2 huge ones on Xbox 360 are Halo 4 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 but they both seem to be very competitive with a lot of little details, perks, upgrades, customisations and what not.

Is Halo 4 worth getting for online multiplayer?

What a weird way to burn a bunch of bridges.

I need a tell-all book about Halo 4's development. Sounds like it might not have been totally pleasant, but hey, I guess the guy that just left would imply that.

Not at this point in the game. The multitplayer feels dead throughout much of the week and unless you buy the Majestic Maps you'll be frustrated at the lack of small maps available in the game.

At this point I can't recommend anyone buy Halo 4. Those of us that already have the game can suffer through trying to make something of it, but no one else should knowingly jump into this game.

Sounds accurate to every big studio + Microsoft's love of meetings factor.

They put the 'M' in 'Microsoft'
Yeah, I read it as something that could apply in almost all AAA studios that are strongly led by their publisher.

I don't know, it'd be fairer if we could all be honest in these senses. I don't have to like his attitude (I don't know what to think, I know so little and am so so so abstracted from whatever working at 343 is like, apart from any hypothesis), but it's good to know where someone honestly stands rather than falsely stands.
What's frustrating here is that the people he may be talking around, assuming this is an actual occurrence, likely aren't in such a position to respond without losing their jobs.
He's able to, not being on their payroll any more.

Oh that reminds me. Halo: Silentium is out next week! I haven't even ordered it yet. Wonder if I can buy a digital copy for my iPad instead of waiting a few weeks for it to be delivered to the bottom of Australia.

Edit. Coolness. Just preordered on iTunes. Just a tad excited to see how it ends

Alright, time to come clean. I figured one of you would have noticed by now.

Now the real question is, just how many alts do I have? We are approaching Mr. Smith levels from Matrix 3. I hope you are prepared.

Yeah, I ordered it a couple weeks back from Barnes and Noble. I loved the first two books unlike many here, and can't wait to get through the final one. I just hope I get it delivered on the first day...

Anyone ever play RAGE? It looked and felt fantastic at 60 fps.

RAGE was a fantastic game that had a rushed ending and a limited "open world" considering it was supposed to be an Open-World-Post-Apocalyptic-FPS.

EDIT:ewww, double post

He's complaining about people talking about him when he won't rework his design so it's playable? As for the Grunt thing, it would be a completely different story if it wasn't during a crunch cycle. That just shows that he should probably be working in that drab office that he complains about in the start until he understands what priorities are.

EDIT: So why is he getting upset at the sandbox designer? 343's goal with the sandbox was to have a consistent sandbox across Campaign and Multiplayer(whether or not it is a good idea is irrelevant).

What are the odds that the PC ports won't have a multiplayer?

CEA, never forget

It would be inexcusable for Halo CE and 2 to ship without multi, seeing as I can play multi on both of them right now.

What do you think MS is up to with this then? What if the new Xbox is also a SteamBox and they're getting round the lack of backwards compatibility, by putting their best titles on Steam..

This would also explain Don Mattrick's comments recently that they don't consider the SteamBox a threat. They don't consider it a threat because they're shipping a SteamBox!!

I'm saying the dude should figure out what a normal job does instead of sitting all high and mighty when he has no idea on how to do a normal job let alone be something as prestige as a developer.

There's a good reason that DeeJ asks in all of the Breaking In articles "Work Ethic, Talent, or Experience?" This guy doesn't have a great work ethic, especially when he's burning bridges like this.

I honestly don't even get how the Twitter you posted was a slight against us or a joke at all... Nor do I get what the issue is. Hmm...

Isn't he a hugely successful developer that is seemingly able to work almost wherever he wants?

[Not to defend that Campaign, but that's something just about everyone had a hand in]

The problem is, you did not read the post Karl had quoted. TheOddOne quoted some passage of the text, Synder has written. The twitter image has nothing to do with Karl's post.

Except I understood your post wrong.
