Haha great

@mossmouth @lordsleepyhead personally, i don't have an opinion on the design, because i haven't played it.

Holy shit.

His entire argument boils down to "Maxis said that online is important, people who disagree have an agenda, I haven't played it or seen the arguments against multiplayer being important, therefore Maxis is correct by default."

At this point EA deserves all the negative comments directed at them. Botched launch. Misleading comments about always online. This.

Screw this game.

I have been trying not jump aboard the hate band wagon, but every extra piece of news just dissapoints me more and more.

I had such high hopes for this game and I am still somewhat positive that Maxis will fix a lot of this stuff.

Unbelievable. I RT'd him, and said it was incredible, and he replied. He actually doesn't get it.

my comments are in light of a rabid group of people using every excuse to rave against a business model.
i'm not going to speak to whether that works, or is fun, or if it fucked somebody's mom.

Damn

this is organized bullying against anyone who deigns to not toe a line about what this group demands simcity be.
OH SHIT

@akwinters and bluntly, i have zero patience for it. play it. don't play it. i don't care.

Holy shit, he broke. His mind has broken.

People finding fault in a video game and calling out a public figure for inaccurate, sweeping, and caustic insults is now "organized bullying" against poor journalists and a multibillion dollar corporation.

If only someone would defend these poor rebels who enjoy Maxis's brave SimCity-refining choice to have a more advanced version of a ten year old SimCity mechanic but with online-only access and broken implementation.

He has some more to say. I don't completely disagree with Arthur by the way, but I felt I needed to have my say.

Anyway, I screencapped it cuz that's quicker. Start right at the bottom and work your way up.

Polygon is part of The Verge, isn't it? I wonder if the higher ups there are concerned at all about damage to their org's credibility.

They're sites under the same umbrella. I don't think the Verge has any say over Polygon. They're just both sites under Vox media, the same way Gawker sites work.

I don't even understand what's going on. Candidly admitting "I guess I was wrong about that!" would be so much easier than all of this twitter drama.

For some reason, I just thought of adam sessler.... Has he talked about this stuff within the past few days?

EDIT: yes he has but nearly 7 days ago

Some people, e.g. those with a narcissistic personality disorder, cannot admit they are wrong. There are terrible people to know and/or work with.

don't know if that is Gies' reason or not, of course.

I wonder if next we will learn that the game is powered by the Necronomicon and kill kittens to to produce the DVD.

And Polygon isn't part of The Verge, so...

Doesn't change the fact they are both highly commercialized, click driven sites.

edit: Polygon and Verge are owned by Vox, whose funding came from:

wikipedia said:
The Washington, D.C.-based company has raised about $40 million in total funding. The Series A having been led by Accel Partners in 2008, Series B by Comcast Interactive Capital in 2009, Series C by Khosla Ventures in 2010, and all three participating for Series D in 2012. Other funders are Allen & Company, Providence Equity Partners, and various angel investors, including Ted Leonsis, Dan Rosensweig, Jeff Weiner, and Brent Jones. The funding will be used to facilitate the site’s growth, fueling acquisitions and driving sales.[3][8][9] According to sources, the latest round, in May 2012, valued Vox at $140 million.[10]

They are there to make money, that is all. The verge isn't some paragon of integrity.

Every day there's something new with this game. It was already pathetic but now I don't know what to make of it any more, I just wanted a fun SimCity game...

People will get on with the issues after the dust has settled and the patches to fix pathing are out (I assume). They will get frustrated occasionally with the always online and some people turn away (sadly) just due to that but that is set now really.

The only thing that would really hurt it (other than not fixing the pathing and improving servers) would be if they actually had the balls to release city boundary upgrade dlc.

I'm not entirely sure why Arthur can't understand peoples' complaints with the game, if anything you'd think he'd try harder to comprehend the issues for people given his position and the substantial amount of people who have a problem with it. Otherwise it screams corporate butt-licker but from reading his posts it really does seem like he broke a bit, he needs a break from the PC!

Not paying for a shit game, not playing it and still getting entertainment from it?

This is a freemium model I can get behind.

The main thing I think is that they lie. If they simply said "Yes, we could make the game offline, but we do not want to because we think the game should be played online" then I would have no problem with it. I would not buy it, but they dont bullshit me.
Diablo 3 is in a similar position because the Ps4 version of the game will be Offline compatible, will have no AH and have local multiplayer... everything we asked for the PC version.

I can't remember the last time I've seen a game blow up so spectacularly at launch. This is just incredible.

As funny as this game is, it still won't touch Daikatana. That game destroyed two good developers (Ion Storm, Looking Glass), turned John Romero into a laughing stock, and nearly cratered Eidos who are just now recovering.

You said that Polygon and The Verge weren't part of the same company. Untalkative_Bunny corrected you.

But Polygon isn't part of The Verge's content. They moved off of their domain a while ago. They're owned by Vox, but what I'm more confused about is Untalkative_Bunny "informing" me about The Verge not being a paragon of integrity, as if I mentioned any opinion about that in the first place. The response felt like a response to me defending The Verge or something, which I definitely wasn't doing.

But yeah, I didn't know they were both Vox. Y'learn something new every day.

The more I read Arthur Gies' tweets, the more I want to delete Polygon from my Pulse news feed. He hurts their credibility that much.

What a clusterfuck for what is still a BRAND NEW SITE...

What's most surprising to me is how many people seems to have believed Maxis and EA when they were speaking publicly and saying completely ridiculous stuff like "its just DRM" and most important "we'd have to redesign the whole game if we'd want to allow offline play". Seriously, NEVER believe a public comment from a corporation. This is "common sense 101". Off course its bullshit and they could have made a proper offline mode in 2 mins.

It would be cool if they could do a rerelease: give the game another year in the oven, fix the AI, remove the DRM, maybe find a way to allow larger cities, and then put it out under a new name. And give everyone who bought this a free upgrade to the fixed version, like Stardock did with Elemental.

But it's EA, so that'll never happen.

I'm amazed someone like Arthur can even help be part of something like this. The more you see of him the more he appears to lack any skill whatsoever.

As for Maxis....it's nothing but a shell these days.

SimCity: A City Reborn.

But they have to nuke the old SimCity first -- preferably with a meteor.

Simcity 4 is better than both. Much more customizable as well.

I prefer to make big, dense cities rather than the suburbia that SC4 steers you toward. But to each his own/

In other news, Arthur Gies apparently doesn't know how to use the word "deign".

Didn't we all know Polygon was going to be absolute shit from the moment of its inception? Just look at the staff. I see very few people deserving of respect. It's Kotaku on steroids.
