oh so its more of a EA sim then?

i havent played but it seems to be the closest available...at least thats the impression i got.
seems sim4 still holds the crown

Hahahah yeah, it's an EA sim except funner because you're el presidente than a boring CEO. :p

And in Tropico you're more concerned on providing services to your citizens more than beautifying your areas (unless you go tourism).

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Guys, you remember Aliens' debut? And you probably remember how it collapsed quickly. "Unfortunately", this was destined to have a giant debut for many reasons. What's important now is seeing how it's going to di in the long run, and so far all the signals point to bad (negative news leeping coming).

The comparison is only skin deep though. Tropico 4 (and series in general barring 2) is more focused on simulating you as a corrupt Banana Republic president than anything of being a SimCity game.

Holly shit just watched the trailer... Simcity... you can go die NOW.

Oh definitely. I implore people to buy Tropico 4 (with its expansion Modern Times). It's not a SimCity 4 replacement, but it adds another perspective to the whole sim games, and definitely worth the money more than SimCity 2013.

To the group of people who always complain about DRM and act so self-entitled: guess what, you are just the small vocal minority. For a big publisher like EA they won't care if you don't buy their games. They may have lost you as a customer, but they will always find their audience somewhere else.

Is it really so entitled to want a game you paid for to work properly?

The vast majority of gamers never visit websites like GAF. They were most likely unaware of the game's problems.
This is a bad argument. I'd go back through the SimCity threads on GAF and take a look-even when GAFfers knew of the games problems, they still bought it. Justifications went from stuff like "But it's an MMO!" to "They'll solve the problems soon, so I'll just buy it now and wait for that." to "Goddamnit GAF, I'm weak and I bought the game :("

Sure, there are some people who probably are not aware of the scope of the problems but there are plenty who see the negative feedback and buy the game anyway just because it's the new SimCity. Maybe they liked the franchise and bought it hoping for a new, 3D spin on the old games or they simply bought into the hype and dismissed the negative feedback coming out of the early adopters but they still bought it.

When EA comes back with another half-finished product, the blame is squarely on the consumers and there are plenty on GAF who are part of that group.

Well, until they got hit by those problems, kind of hard to sleepwalk through not being able to play the game.

And if you googled around like people do in the internet age, they may have stumbled upon any number of threads on GAF or articles on websites like RPS dissecting the issues.

The majority of gamers might not visit places like this regularly but in the internet age, they are also likely to google their problems and GAF threads tend to be pretty high up there I find.

This of course affects the word of mouth the game will get and it won't be positive word of mouth

Just like D3, this is people buying the game on reputation.

It'll be interesting to see how much a sequel sells, now that Diablo and SimCity have ruined theirs.

The only ones that have a right to complain is those who played and bought it. Or couldn't play it because of issues.
Well, thank you for telling me what I have a right to say or not.

Besides, your argument is absurd. You essentially say no one should complain about the success of a very peculiar business model if they haven't financially endorsed it beforehand.

Looks like the media has a stronger pull with public perceptions with games, then we thought, at least teh major publications.

Even the places that give them 70 reads very well, despite the score. Then we have all the 75+ and up scores that mitigate the damage. I mean honestly, when you have all those March 4th reviews swooning over the game it claims a lot of victims and then even after that there is more praise.

The media has more sway then they like to portray when it comes to game purchases and it really does seem like gamers do act based on early reviews, no matter if only a select few have pre-launch reviews.

I'm not so sure this was the moment where DRM was "approved".

Some of the replies in this thread are cringe worthy.

People vote with their wallets when it comes to games. Just pointing that out. It sucks there is so much support for the new SimCity if DRM is such a huge factor.

I'm an expert

Formerly worldrevolution. The only reason I am nice to anyone else is to avoid being banned.
People voted long ago with Diablo 3. If the name is big enough, people do not care. They're not trained to expect the worst yet.

Sorry about that. It came out wrong.
English isn't my first language and I lost my train of thought because of it.

I don't think people have the right to complain about the people who bought the game at launch. Especially not if they didn't share the crap they went through at the launch.

Reviews and previews all looked very positive and people had been waiting 10 years for this to come out. And the SimCity/Maxis brand was respectable.

People who bought the game were very vocal because of the servers being down. They were the loudest group complaining. If the game wasn't this popular or didn't sell this well the server problem wouldn't have been an issue and the crazy circus that happened afterwards wouldn't have happened at all.

It's truly sad how much of this they're getting away with.

I hope each and every one of you that bought this feels like shit.

I meant this tongue-in-cheek, but for real, day 1 purchases just rarely make sense in this industry anymore.

As much as this gets repeated, when exactly have video game consumers actively voted with their wallets and seen change because of it? Despite the complaints against DLC when Oblivion did Horse Armor, it's now a standard for every game to have it. Same can be said for games that have included shady DRM (Heroes of Might and Magic 5 and AC Brotherhood come to mind.)

For the most part PC gamers don't vote with their wallet. They just complain very loudly afterwards and all companies are learning from that. If they can mitigate the noise or convert it into sales then they're fine because they'll still be making money.

I'd be interested to see how the SimCity sales progressed over those two weeks. We'll never know, but it would paint a very interesting picture as to how people actually voted with their wallets. My bet is on sales having spiked some time around Lucy Bradshaw mentioning a free game.

all those people on here saying other are losers for buying the game or we area ll to blame or we should be ashamed of ourselves if we bought the game...

STOP ACTING LIKE YOU'RE A SUPERIOR RACE/SAINT ABOVE OTHERS

you know what? Sometimes people just buy games because they are hoping for some fun/escapism from real life just to enjoy themselves.

Yes it is true that they should research MORE, but no one knew the problems were going to be so bad at launch and post launch. Is it wrong to hope for the best? Is it wrong to expect Maxis would have treated us better?

Calling others losers and telling us we should be ashamed of ourselves? Well good for you sirs. You're the best thing since sliced bread. Please tell us what to buy from now on.

Further proof that even though I'd like to say it is impossible I can fully see the industry moving to always online/ no player mods in the PC space in a big way.

Always online, no rentals, no used games coming to a new console near you soon as well.
