If she really wanted to teach her boys a lesson, and had any decency she'd cancel the Kickstarter by now. She's gone over the project goal by a huge chunk, and has the means to pay for her child's education herself. At this point she's just taking money from the ignorant.

Sometimes I wish KS had a "cap" because there are projects on there that simply take x amount of dollars and any money after becomes kind of a problem.

Like that "give the bullied bus monitor a vacation." At first everyone was 100% glad. Then as the totals started spiraling out of control, people back-lashed slightly.

Look at the Tropes in Game ks. If the author of that KS got the funds she required, the response would have been more muted.

Then in events like inExile games, where more cash just results in more being spent on the project, it makes sense.

KS campaigns should be submitted with two options: fixed cost or flex cost. If this girl got the funds for her camp and that was it, no problems.

This isn't remotely indicative of what Kickstarter represents. They even have rules against things like this. That's why people are reporting it.

EDIT: The silver lining that made me feel better about this is that I checked on the Retronauts Kickstarter page, and they've been given like $5,000 more in half as many days with half as many backers.

Well yeah, it's obvious there is an ulterior motive to this campaign.

It's really disappointing that Kickstarter allowed this to go through. I'd like to know how they screen projects, as this is one is a giant red flag. They apparently don't give a reason for denying projects, so do they just use a bot to read them or something?

No "fund my life" projects.
Examples include projects to pay tuition or bills, go on vacation, or buy a new camera.

Even if they say it doesn't violate that rule because she's making a game they really need to cancel this. It's a scam.

The only reason there is a $10K tier is that it was added after we'd surpassed the goal and Brenda Romero (google her because she's got far more clout in this field than you do) asked me to do just that. I was specifically asked by industry leaders (who were total strangers prior to this campaign) to add more rewards because good people know good intentions and want to do good things. The bullied bus monitor was indiegogo, IIRC. Unlike kickstarter I don't think they need to be for specific projects or anything so there's no reason to have a cap. Although, I do think that if people were in it for the good deed they could have just stopped after a certain point and given it to another worthwhile cause.

KS really needs to add some sort of rules that force the authors of kickstarters to account for every dime spent, and if the majority doesn't add up, they need to pay it back to Kickstarter who will send it back to the contributors. Not sure if that is feasible though.

However, there should at least be different tiers of Kickstarters -- open and closed. Open is for the projects where the authors can easily make use of extra money from the Kickstarter, and closed is where it stops as soon as it hits the reward. They should also be contractually obliged to spend however much they make, regardless of the intial goal.
