One thing AoT does consistently well is subvert the common shounen trope of defeating more powerful enemies through sheer force of will. Sometimes you really can't win, no matter how much you want to!

What, they can't just burn their cosmo????

I was thinking the dude would either pull off some miracle or die in the attempt forcing the kids to leave the mother behind. Gotta love some cowardice once in a while. The main character is never going to let him live it down!

If the credits posted on 2ch are accurate (and the Sakuga Wiki seems to think the ep2 credits are accurate at least, but I haven't seen any scans yet), Yuzuru Tachikawa will be storyboarding and directing episode 5 of Attack on Titan. Yes, that's the director of Death Billiards.
Quoting because bottom of the page is a bitch.

I can see it now, Titans playing pool with humans for balls.

Ore Imo S2 - 01
Okay so you've got this guy with a sister, but there's actually like 3 versions of his sister but with different hair colors. The guy likes to stare up at the sky a lot. It was alright, and I can see why someone would enjoy it. Not a priority watch for me right now.

Date A Live - 01

Yup

Started out as an anime stereotype and pretty much ended up as one. I thought maybe, JUST MAYBE they might do something "different" but then the flying scantily clad robot women showed up. It's basically like if Evangelion was less "srs business" and turned into a rom-com, minus the giant robots (so far). What's worse is I know I'm going to watch at least one more episode even after typing this all out. (Bottom line: It's dumb, but not the worst shit ever)

Romcom Sanfu - 01
Another show I did not expect to like. What really stood out to me though was that Sanfu has some striking similarities to Bakemonogatari. A lot of dialogue between few characters, character's with similar personalities to the Bakemono characters, and maybe this is a bit of an asspull, but I even think the MC and the main girl even look a little like Araragi and Senjougahara (keywords: a little). I like the characters, the style (which isn't anything we haven't seen before), the dialogue, and most of all, the humor. I'll keep watching this for now.

---

I watched these three shows instead of watching Titan tonight. I'm not really sure what this means. But more importantly, from what I have seen so far, I haven't come across a new show from this season that I hate. Which is weird because nothing so far seems all the different than what pops up every season (cept for Aku no Hana). Either I suddenly have a higher tolerance for bad shows, or there's something else going on here...

The dude already has a career. He directs a ton of Bleach episodes apparently, including that famous filler episode which had crazy sakuga action including animation by Kameda. He worked on the Hell Verse movie too (yuck!).

Tamako Market ending was pretty awful. Terrible cast. I think it's the worst show I've seen from KyoAni in years (worse than their Key ones).

Yeah, I've been watching this anime and put off seeing the last two episodes for a while.

Finally gave them a shot and was so disappointed. Such a bland, safe, mundane show.

KyoAni's new show is edgy as shit though. While still having that KyoAni uguu touch.

AnoHana:

Score: 8.731

Aku no Hana:

Score: 5.231

---

MAL is wrong because AnoHana is bad

thus

Aku no Hana

is good

Perfect logic.

Fuck, I don't want to watch Aku no Hana but I'm compelled to give it a chance...which I probably will do.

Incidentally I've watched all of AnoHana except for the last episode.

Attack on Titan Episode 1

Well, that was great.

I'm unfamiliar with the source material (and won't acquaint myself with it until this show runs its' course), so I can't speak for it as an actual adaptation, but this was a very, very strong introduction, I thought. I had some pretty high expectations, given the promotional material, and I'm pretty happy that they've been met. At least, thus far. The production quality is pretty outstanding, I have to say. It just looks really good. I really like the bold outlines to the character art - there's something about how defined each character is against the scene that's quite appealing. Speaking of, the backgrounds are incredibly gorgeous stuff. Characters animate well and the action is fluid and well-directed.

If I had anything to complain about, it's territory that people have already well trodden on, and it's that Araki's nature as a director is something of a double edged sword. I think that other edge didn't really show its' colours in this episode, but subtlety is not a word that exists in his world. He's a person who deals in loud emotions. Nothing can make that fact plainer than the Recon Unit's return to the city. The comparisons to Jojo that were made, I feel, seem incredibly appropriate, as it seemed to evoke just that. It served to deflate what I can only assume was meant to be a moment of gravity in the episode - if they wanted the viewer to fully understand the hopelessness of the situation, I can't rightly say that they succeeded. Ultimately, though, it was a mere speed bump in the overall level of quality in the episode and the last five minutes more than made up for any failing in that scene to illustrate the immense terror that the Titans clearly represent.

A special shout-out to the blonde guy, who I was certain was going to die heroically in defense of the kids and the mother. I certainly didn't expect that outcome, haha. The scene in general was well done, I thought - even if the whiplash caught me off guard. As an aside, I should probably work on names sooner rather than later.

And while I haven't seen much of it yet, I have to say that watching characters maneuver via their grapple harnesses is honestly incredibly thrilling. I love it. I love the sense of speed, dynamism and frenetic physicality in how they soar around through the grapple lines. Perhaps just as much, I really love how punchy it sounds when the wires burst out. It gives everything about how they move a great deal of weight, and really lends a sense of authenticity to it. Honestly, as strong as the animation here was, it's the sound design that really sold me. The promise of these sequences is probably what gets me the most excited for the show. I thought it did a really good job utilizing both traditional and CG techniques to get the effect intended. I also think this is where the thick outlines in the art benefited the production by making certain your eyes are following the actual characters, where the CG backdrops could (and would) threaten to fail to hold up to a discerning eye.

There were a few shortcomings in the production, to be sure. I think everyone else already pointed out the still frames, but I think I'll prefer to see it not as cutting corners as a result of rushed production, but more that they're trying not to blow their load, so to speak, and trading consistency for short term spectacle. I'll gladly suffer a few tastefully executed stills sprinkled throughout for the sake of a stronger whole.

As an aside, I'm not sure I necessarily follow the complaints with regards to the opening. I wouldn't say it's outstanding, but it's not inappropriate, and certainly very enthusiastic about the material, which is fairly characteristic of productions that Araki's responsible for, it would seem. The song, too, was more than appropriate to the tone.

Gonna break with Natsu no Arashi, and then onward to, uh, well Aku no Hana. I think I can handle a QUALITY double feature.

Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san 06

Idols have nothing on you.

You know that was a great break from the comedy near the end of the episode. Never expected that to ever happen. Even if it turned out to be another gag at the end it was still well done.

Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin)

Episode 1

"Sou da, kono seikai wa...zankoku nan da."

I liked this first episode. A good start I think. I read the first couple chapters or so of the manga around just before New Years and I can't remember exactly but it seemed more or less a 1:1 transition and the first episode covered roughly about what I thought it would.

I personally liked the shows opening overall and also liked the song.

It's an interesting premise so it will something to see how the story evolves. Reading some comments on that it seems like some don't like the way it's currently going in the manga.

The visuals in this first episode were really nice, some really great backgrounds on display. The part where
the soldiers return to inside the walls
seemed more just taken right out of the manga though. The art was nice and the expressions captured the emotion but there was really no animation or just the moving lines along the periphery type style. That or just a panning shot with sound effects playing.

With that, it will be interesting to see how the visuals and animation stand up in subsequent episodes as the first or first few episodes usually have more work put into them and look better.

It's just a quick shot, but one I personally liked, was how Eren's fathers eyes were closed, then you see the reflection on his glasses as he stands and then his eye's are open.

The really big giant I think looks kind of cool but a lot of the rest certainly capture that unsettling nature to them.

Regarding near the end...
I recall that as being a bit gory and wondered how it would be handled in the show. I felt really bad for the kids and the mother and even Hannes. That whole scene I think is quite powerful. The way Hannes is all set for battle and ready to pay back the father but then fear gets the better of him. The transition between his face and the giants...Then the way the mother wanted the children to get to safety but then reaching out didn't want to leave them either. The children being forced away but looking back and seeing what happens.
All pretty effectively done I thought.

I'm not really a big Yuuki Kaji fan as he's sort of hit and miss with me. Maybe some of it is the characters themselves he's voicing but the guy can certainly let out a good scream with that "Yamero!".

Now to go back and read everyone else's comments on the show(as I'm catching up with the thread in general anyway) as I might have forgotten to mention something.

You know what would be amazing? If we somehow came up with an archive for people's impressions on a show. Now that I'm sorta keeping up a bit, I'm interested in reading more impressions on the new shows. The search works, but it's not the most convenient thing in the world.

This would actually be very easy to do if everyone agreed to use brackets!

If everyone would be okay with doing this sort of thing, it'd really be great. But then there's the fact that a lot of us call shows by different names.

My Little Sister Can't Possibly Be This Much Of A Bitch! Season 2 Episode 1

Man, I had forgotten just how much of a non-entity the guy is in his own house. Everything revolves around the sister and it's like the parents like to pretend he's not even there. Must be rough.

So, yeah, this is very much a new season of Oreimo with all it entails. The only question now is will I be able to escape it's faux-incestuous clutches this time or will the #shamewatch get the better of me again?

We should take the MAL approach and use only official Japanese romanisation.

munch munch om nom nom

lol, good luck with that. Seriously though, what do you all think of trying to come up with a way to make it easier to find everyone's impressions for a show?

Back in my day we had to walk through ten feet of snow just to be able to read the newest impressions of them newfangled japanese cartoons.

I swear young'uns these days don't know how good they have it.

YES! That's what I'm talking about! Genthru/Gon fight was better than I could have hoped. Totally forgot how fucked up Gon gets in it. It was glorious. Great music, great animation, great everything!

Looks like just one episode left of Greed Island, then we can start the Chimera Ant Arc!

I think it'd be nice to have a tag we could include in posts based on a show for each season. It'd make it easy to go back and read people's impressions. Something like include [OreImo] somewhere in your post. We could list them in the next OP if there is any interest in doing something like this. You can still call a show whatever you want, but including the tag would help people find your impression of it.

Hashtags in the Title field of a post!

That's an even better idea, using the title field. I don't care what the tags are, I'm just wondering what the rest of animeGAF thinks of trying this.

Hurrah! I've had to wade through so much crap in the last couple of years just to find some decent stuff :p

From the OP I guess I'd be interested in Attack on Giant, Gargantia, and possibly Ginga Kikoutai (character design reminds me a lot of scryed).
Need to find something to replace JoJo (never going to happen), Psycho-Pass, Zetsuen No Tempest (I'm sorry guys, please forgive me), and Ixion DT (also never going to happen).

This is the only Gargantia impressions the thread has so far (Courtesy of Duckroll)

Check out the previous few pages or so for Titan impressions. A lot of people posted them recently.

Majestic Prince (Ginga Kikoutai) Impressions. Left out a bunch, sorry if you're not represented here.

tl;dr, especially if I didn't get a good mix of the opinions: Opinions about the show in this thread are very mixed. Some love it, some think it's complete trash, and then there are people in between. Same character designer as Scryed by the way.

If we did managed to convince people to use the post title hashtags idea, it would also make it really easy to use a script to collect all the direct post links for easy display somewhere else. Link them by username too, probably.

Very impressed with Attack on Titan. This has potential to be the best one out of this season along with Gargantia. I hope they keep up the production quality as episodes goes on.
