SNES Game Collecting (Tips, discussion, and info for like minded collectors)

Does anyone else have those periods where they just halt collecting anything for no apparent reason and stop caring about getting the games they wanted? I'm going through that right now and I haven't bought a SNES game in almost two weeks. :S

You can do better than a Trinitron, actually. Sony BVM and PVM monitors might be worth looking into.

Uh, Sony PVMs and BVMs carry the Trinitron designation.

I'm almost in that situation right now, but the apparent reason seems to be discovering Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. Also, I started playing through the shmups I got during my collecting phase, so I don't really want anything else.

I think my SNES collection is pretty much done now unless I decide to go for Harvest Moon. I think I've made my peace with never bothering to get Hagane, Wild Guns, and E.V.O.

Exactly what I'm going through now. I think it may have something with me playing New Vegas and now the first Bioshock. I also feel that my collection is sufficient enough, even without the titles you mentioned as well as Demon's Crest.

That's... the majority of the time for me. The way it pretty much works is that I couldn't give a fuck less about collecting old games from September to April or so... but come summertime? That wallet opens up and I cannot stop buying shit.

I dunno, from what I'd seen of Wild Guns (which is admittedly not much), it didn't seem like a game that'd really be up my alley. I'd be fine letting that one go to other obsessive collectors. Same goes for Harvest Moon; haven't really made my mind up on EVO or Hagane or similar (I mean, I like Strider kinda and all, but...). Definitely interested in Demon's Crest at some point, though.

I'm trying to decide if I should buy a SFC Wild Guns for $100 or wait to see if I can find it cheaper... it's one of the last really expensive things I want. :/ Rendering Ranger R2 looks badass but I'm not about to drop $400+ on a cart. Undercover Cops looks neat as well, but I'm kinda iffy on that one too.

I'm about to order 8 more games from JapanGameSource. I really need to stop.

Heh, see, this is why I only allot myself $60 a paycheck for this kind of thing; it's a lot easier to stop myself from going crazy when I know I'm on a budget.

I'd go after Wild Guns and probably Hagane (SFC though since I just want to play the game) but EVO...it looks cool but not exactly that fun of an action RPG.

Of course if I happened to find it for cheap, i'd still play it. As for Earthbound? One day.

EDIT: Yeah, budget limitations is always a good idea when involved in something like this.

I budgeted myself a bit here out of my annual bonus at work to buy stuff with. Also my tax return came through recently. I'm going to try to limit myself to one game/paycheck after I decide on one more bigger purchase. There's just so many tempting games.

This is a bit off-topic, but Parallacs's post reminded me that I should ask about it. Is there a certain model and/or size of Trinitron/WEGA that is considered the best? I've been thinking about getting a CRT for older games that require them like Virtua Cop, Point Blank, etc., so I'd like to get GAF's input about what to look for.

I looked a lot on craig's list and most were very basic models. Zing in this thread posted a picture of his FV-310. I think it is the top of the line WEGA:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=48030883&postcount=1925

I was able to find a 27" FV-300 that fit my room perfectly. Note: it took two strong adults to carry the TV up the stairs. I would hate to have to carry the 32". These TVs are unbelievably heavy.

Check out this thread for some more info:

I tend to spend a few weeks on a system at a time, but it doesn't hurt to pump the brakes every now and then. It's getting to the point where the SNES games I want are kind of pricey, like $50 or more, so I'm branching out to fill in my n64 and ps1 stuff a bit instead.

Maybe I'll find some good deals at flea markets or pawn shops instead of paying the market prices on ebay for everything right now.

Yes but it also helps when there aren't as many games I want to have for my collection...so far it's down to Chrono Trigger and Harvest Moon and I'm prepared to sit on ebay and wait for something good to be posted. I go that way with other hobbies too BUT I imagine once summer rolls around and I can go visit the flea market again, I'll be back at it again.

Maybe I need to go over to Goodwill auctions, I was able to triple my money last time and I could use a little more extra for games.

So out of curiosity, how do you guys decide between getting the US version or the Japanese version of a game? Is it just price, or do you have some other reasoning that goes into it?

For me, I'll buy the US version unless its censored, or if its a game that just seems... "right" to play the Japanese version of. For example, ninja games or shmups. Dunno. I'm weird. And bored.

If there is an English option or I don't have to really worry about text heaviness. Like if I learned Harvest Moon SFC had an English option, I'd buy it like right now.

I've... never seen Goodwill auctions before.

Huh. I kinda like the look of this, although the selection isn't quite as good.

Yea, I was wondering why the hell can't I find games there anymore and now I see where they all go, jerks. It's not the best true but if you are patient, you can luck out.

all those games could be sitting in some goodwill for $1 instead though. One of my local goodwills ships off everything game related. I've never seen a scrap of anything in there.

At least it's not company policy, as another one has a constant stream of goodies. Got a $5 N64, the mini ps1, a ps2 fat I flipped for $55, gamecubes, controllers, games, etc.

Price mostly, but I am with you on the editing and such. I don't really care as long as the game isn't too text heavy. I love the look of the SFC carts too. Some of those labels are beautiful.

Yeah. I haven't bought anything since getting Earthbound a few weeks ago. I just started Persona 4, and I have Earthbound, Tactics Ogre, and Donkey Kong Country 3 which I've never played before. Need to finish Yoshi's Island and have been craving some Final Fantasy 2 as well. So I have tons of shit to play right now. Probably won't buy anything more until some time this summer unless I stumble upon some garage sales that happen to have some shit I want.

Ugh. Goodwill auctions. It's the reason why most Goodwills are total shit now for game hunting.

Edit: Oh me and my silly second post. Should've just edited this into the prior post. Sorry about that guys.

Finally bought the real deal version of Super Castlevania IV:

Love the game, had the US version already... but I wanted the uncensored version. So I'm glad I finally got around to buying this.

If I had SFC Castlevania IV I'd PCB and case swap with the American one. That Japanese art is fugly. lol

Oh yeah, it's some of the worst art I've ever seen. The American artwork is pretty rancid, too. Maybe I'll just print out some sexy Maria doujinshi and plaster it all over the cart.

djtiesto

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Two copies of Fire Striker for $15, one to keep, one to fund something nicer (Sunset Riders?).

Contra III for $25 tomorrow.

I'm sort of tempted on getting "Gold Label" Super Metroid at $40, even though I have my original game still. Thoughts?

Yes, Fire Striker! One of my favorite obscure SNES games. Enjoy!

Whoo NintendoAge!

Traded my Shadowrun for Final Fantasy III :D

Bringing it up again: Should we have an NES thread since there is one for Master System now? Personally I think it would be nice to have for recommendations and NES stuff in general.

Yes, a NES thread would be great!

Unless someone beats me to the punch, i'll try to make a NES thread when I get some time, dunno how a catch all thread with links to specifics would work though. Would be nice for each company thread to have a link to its other system threads though (NES have a link to SNES, Genesis to Saturn and Master system, etc).

Well I picked up Turtles in time for 36 a little higher than I wanted but it was for my wife's birthday she has found an extreme love for arcade brawlers also had to get her an snes stick. Good times i say. Also Pirates of Dark Water snes is an amazingly good game for being a tv tie in.

This would be an acceptable substitute for a General Collecting thread.

Which SNES stick did you pick up?

i did the Genesis OP; if you guys want links to this & the GB/GBA threads, i'm down to toss them in there!

actually if you guys wanna make a banner for Retro Gaming GAF & post links from there, i'd gladly take part

I need a Wild Guns before I'm done. Need.

what an awful game to do that to yourself, heh

Heh, see, this is why I only allot myself $60 a paycheck for this kind of thing; it's a lot easier to stop myself from going crazy when I know I'm on a budget.

i really need to do this; i keep coming in under budget on a title like $36 shipped when i planned $45! LET'S GO BUY ANOTHER ONE

I want that version... I needs more pools of blood >:)

oh wait, is that what we missed out on? now im mad

ps Demon's Crest, then Pocky & Rocky (why you gotta be so expensive?!) and im out!

Art may be ugly, but that logo is fuckin badass!

Shifting gears, a friend and I played through King of the Monsters 2 tonight. Classic SNK arcade cheese but the theme is pretty funny and it stayed interesting all the way through. Biggest gripe would be the grappling, love the bright art and big sprites though.

Finally landed an Earthbound auction. Turns out Dad's surgery started later and ran longer than originally intended (he's doing fine, btw, as far as we can tell, although understandably a little under the weather), so the auction I was looking at ended while I was in the waiting room, well, waiting.

$176.70 + $5.80 S&H - $50 gift certificate = $132.50 total. Could do worse!

congrats, Shadow! also glad to hear about your old man, a fine day all around, then.

this one just for the shelf, or is this your first play (or intended replay)?

I can't exactly call it a first play, since I finished the Onett portion on the Wii port of SNES9X this one time, but generally, yeah.

Although knowing my playing habits it will probably end up collecting dust at some point, but eh, I spent this much money on it, might as well see it through!
