Looks like Unbounded so I am not interested.

also knowing Namco's DLC practices I expect this to have a terrible F2P model.

I'm actually still a fan of classic style Ridge Racer, but I don't know about all of these Burnout gameplay elements. Burnout was a great series, but I still prefer classic gameplay when it comes to Ridge Racer.

Yeah I know it's apparently different. I was more asking about the Rubberbanding.

The rubberbanding in RRU isn't as bad as RR3DS. That being said, I'd rather have the rubberbanding in a true RR like the 3DS game than to have RRU at all. I just want a sequel to RR7 really.

...you do realise I'm calling you a crying baby?

You do realize my crying like a baby over the fecal matter that Namco just announced is rightfully justified, *right*. Have you even played any of the old school RR games? Have you read the reactions in this thread? If you had you'd be crying like a baby too.

I'm actually surprised that you are only crying, isamu.

I figured most of your furniture would be broken and you'd be digging around for razorblades by now. ;)

I want to try this out before I shit on it. Looks fun enough, and free to play...what do I have to lose other than an hour of my precious time to see if it's decent enough to stick with.

huh. i might try it, depending on how monetization works. why keep ruining the ridge racer name tho? i'd love a real ridge racer but eh wat you gonna do.

Unbounded was a decent game. It's not really a good Ridge Racer game, but it's good fun nonetheless.

People saying "free is too expensive for this"... jesus... I don't even know what to say...

I hope we get a proper Ridge sequel next gen, but for now it's good to see they are keeping the brand alive.

So looking at the end credits of that trailer Bugbear are involved again ? Fucking A. Loved Bugbear and I loved Ridge Racer Unbounded, absolutely adored it. Favourite racing game of last year by a long shot. It's bastard hard to start off with and just got better and better the more you played. I'll take as much Bugbear as I can get. I know it's not traditional Ridge Racer but I don't give a fuck about that, but I can see Namco being absolutely awful in its pay structure for this. Still I'll give it a whirl, hope it appears sometime soon.

I'm also very interested in Bugbear returning to their roots with very likely a new Flatout game (or at least spiritual sequel) and if this helps them fund that good on them.

Apparently next to impossible. I'm curious, do they even know and talk to the audience who buys these games?

If more people had bought Ridge 6/7/3DS/Vita the traditional series would be alive and well. They changed it up because the audience wasn't buying these games.

This gen was really rough for arcade racers though... they pretty much all bombed.

Honestly, I think the best approach might be to make a new Ridge Racer game for arcades (which are still big in Japan) and release it on XBLA/PSN/PC. It might only have half a dozen tracks, but a full retail release just isn't going to sell.

Fuck. I'd take a res'd up collection on PSN. We never got Rave Racer in the home. Could be cleaned up like the dreamy Daytona USA on PSN/XBLA.

There goes all my hopes of a true RR8 for the PS4 launch. Such a shame, the series is never going to recapture the magic of Type 4, but RR7 (and to a lesser extent the Vita game) had slick gameplay and a clean aesthetic that worked well. As much as I like Bugbear and their games, gritty urban environments and crashes are not what I associate with Ridge Racer.

From the way Namco seems to have handled the Vita version of RR, this sounds like a significant step up and the natural point they were heading to.

Yeah for sure. I tried Unbounded and thought it was pretty good actually, it introduced some interesting features and played quite well. It's not Ridge Racer, but I guess that was the point. The series was dead, so Namco thought'd they try the name but under a different type of game. They did it before with R: Racing and it didn't work there at all. Rad music though.

Maybe a "true" RR title would be more suitable to PSN/XBLA, but the cold hard truth is that there is probably no market for it.

Hmm I had plenty of fun with RR Unbounded and friends though it really wasn't that much of Ridge Racer so my thoughts of this were pretty much "Well why the negativity just because it's free to pl... oh wait it's based on Unbounded... meh" :/ I'm not even a huge Ridge Racer fan or player but there was something about the old games that always mesmerized me.

Goddamn, to see the series wind up like this hurts pretty bad. I understand the economic reasons for doing this, but it doesn't make me feel any better.

I'd rather the games be relegated to PSN/XBLA/Steam releases rather than this.

I thought Unbounded was a pretty decent arcade racer, if you ignore that it's supposed to be a Ridge Racer game.

At first I read the headline yesterday and thought 'hmm, maybe that's a good way for the series to go, what more can they really to to change it?' Then I see the game, and its just a F2P rendition of the stupid Bugbear game no one liked.

No one is going to give two shits about this game.

Wasn't the Vita Ridge Racer pretty much free to play? No content at the beginning and tons of downloadable content that you spent money on.

...Oh wait no that was a retail product.

Butthurt Ridge Racer Vita owner. :(

Even though I'm a fan of the old school Ridge Racer games and am upset by what's happened to the series, this game still looks pretty cool, yo.

Its quite funny that this 'free to play' model maybe dead on arrival before it gets started, in the UK anyway as the government are already looking into the 'free to play' model to see whether they will allow it to continue or if its anti consumer in their opinion.

I must be the only person who liked Unbounded, it was the kick in the ass the series needed.

I liked Unbounded too, it's its own thing. BUT:

Part of what makes Ridge Racer so appealing was the focus on beautiful cities or rural landscapes with great blue skies or night tracks so neon-filled they looked like a rave was going to happen anytime. Sweet electronic tunes composed by renowned Japanese DJs. Cars... er, i mean "machine" designs that had their own identity and avoided looking like real car knock-offs for the most part. Clean, nearly relaxing racing that almost makes you feel the wind, none of this crashy stuff.

Unbounded got the gameplay right and in some respects better than traditional Ridge Racer (drifting actually takes skill now) but everything else was the total opposite of Ridge Racer: Dirty streets, orange everything, crashes and destruction, dubstep, freaking DUBSTEP, cars (with stupid names, none of the class of the ficticious car makers) that managed to look like Burnout knock-offs, which in turn are real car knock-offs.

If Unbounded kept Ridge Racer 7's aesthetic that could have been a good compromise.

Did RR: Unbound sell so bad, they decided to just make it free? Unbound wasn't a bad game, it just wasn't Ridge Racer, but more like BurnOut or even Need for Speed. I'll check it out definitely.

I know! How the hell are we meant to know it is a new playstation system without a launch ridge racer!

The fact that RR8 for PS4 wasn't even MENTIONED let alone shown at the SPC is VERY VERY worrying news!!!

I just don't know anymore. Well fuck it....all the Ridge Racer games can be played on PC via emulation so I'll continue to relive the nostalgic memories. As far as current arcade racers go we have GRID 2, TM2 Valley and ESPECIALLY 90's arcade racer coming this year, so....
