Bloomberg: Nintendo to announce 18.7 Billion Yen loss for the fiscal year

Bronetta

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
Considering Wii U is at rock bottom, there's nowhere to go from here but up. Is R&D for a new console factored into these losses?

While we're on this topic: How many years did Sony post losses after the PS3 release?

Another year, another loss and this time a big one. Things don't look good for the future either.

Nintendo NEEDS a major company direction shake up. Iwata, Miyamoto, Shibata, Takeda and Reggie needs to leave.

But the loss is much smaller than last year's. Did all the other kneejerk posts in the thread embolden you?

Ok, why does gaf hate Iwata so much?

Some people told me it's because if Iwata goes the new president will focus on better tech meaning Wii 3 being more powerful than PS5/X1080 like the old days of Nintendo having the more powerful system.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Iwata said Nintendo wouldn't go third party while he was leading the company, so there you go. The people controling the lines of popularity are probably deliberately pushing Iwata over the edge so Nintendo can get a new president and go third party. I hope it doesn't work.

Since most people here apparently didn't read the ITmedia article, allow me to quote it:

The 100 billion yen operating income goal is for the fiscal year that just started.

this is what makes me think they are releasing everything they've fucking got this year. pokemon, zelda, mario kart, yoshi, mario & luigi, mario wii u- anything and everything. they have to do this because there's no other way they're making $1b or coming close to it.

i'm really interested in their projections for the wii u. i'm guessing 10m for the fiscal year.

Sony posted a $114 million dollar loss as well. They lost $6.4 billion the same time last year. Hopefully both companies turn it around this fiscal year.

Um, Iwata gets the boot, instant third party.

I kid. I like Nintendo!

Anticipating alot of great software from Panic Mode Nintendo.

That software ain't showin up for a while. It took a while for the 3DS to get its software lineup to the level that it is today compared to the spare launch offerings that consisted of games like pilotwings and steel diver. It's just not going to happen until at least 2014.

Step 1 -release as many classic Virtual console games for every legacy Nintendo or comparable system to the 3DS and Wii u eshops

Step 2 - find out what's missing still

Step 3 - fill in those gaps and release more classics

Step 4 - remove the stupid download to 1 system only restriction and move to a unified account system with shared points.

Step 5 - take my freaking monies!

Pretty confused by this currency change - how does it affect their current total loss?

Assets in different countries changing value was the explanation last time.
I'm unsure if that includes money held in foreign currency though; which would be good. Or if its just things like the value of buildings or something.

Also from the article:

"While Nintendo struggles with its main business, a weakening of the yen may give some relief, as it boosts the value of overseas earnings. The Japanese currency has depreciated about 13 percent against the U.S. dollar this year and touched a four-year low of 99.95 on April 11.
That may enable the company to post net income of 14 billion yen tomorrow, the company said in January."

I'm guessing the $14 billion figure comes from Nintendo's third quarter forecasts?

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2013/130130_2e.pdf

So, Nintendo will have operating loss and net income?

Yeah, they forecast a $20 billion operating loss and $14 billion net income.

So ... just as keikaku

they made the wii and stopped making games.

$600m loss in two years is pretty awful though. that's something you might expect from sony or microsoft.

i'd say it's almost entirely on the back of the 3ds though. they banked so hard on it being the profit-maker at $250, and sacrificed a lot to get it into homes.

and then in 2012 they released like 3 games. terrible year for the system.
I wonder how much they expected NSMB2 to sell.

Those rushed Nintendo games are still pretty damn good games IMO. If we get a Zelda of WW quality and a Mario of Sunshine quality, I'm OK with that.

After years of record gains with the Wii and DS, now a loss... Oh, how unusual!

3DS started rough, so they made some losses. Wii U is starting rough, that adds to that as well.

3DS is becoming a powerhouse soon, so they'll be making a lot of money again (though maybe not as much as they did with the DS)

At the 2nd half of this year, the Wii U will see some significant improvements in sales, since a lot of good games will come out.

I've said it million times, but I don't know what people expect. They only see the numbers, but don't actually know what it means.

But I understand why this thread will be a lot of fun for the unusal GAF trolls.

Still, NO, Nintendo is not doomed *yawn*

panic mode nintendo is: price drop a few months after release, third-party partnerships (with major franchises), and rushed games. it's not very fun. well, the first one is beneficial for consumers at least.
You forgot point 4. Allocate all resources to a multitude of games to be released in 2 years ala 3ds.

He means that he doesn't want to play mediocre games cloaked in the tattered vestiges of greatness.

Smash Bros in March, Sakurai to get robot arm.

That is... nowhere near as bad as I imagined.

I mean, it's not in any way good, but it's heading in a positive direction.

From the article:

The company may have sold 3.5 million Wii Us last financial year, missing its target of 4 million, Takeshi Koyama, a Tokyo- based analyst at Mizuho Financial Group Inc. (8411), said in a report April 16. The company may sell 9 million units this fiscal year, he said.

Quoting because a lot of people in here are proving they don't read statements well enough to know right here is where the facts are.
