Iwata to become Nintendo of America CEO, NoA CEO promoted to NCL Managing Director

Well that was unexpected.
So, is it good because it means a more unified leadership, or is it bad because Iwata is IMO too much Japan-centric?
Or it could be a smart move if it is made to put Iwata and global presidence closer to western market and its expectations.
Or it could also dangerous because of not enough focusing.
I'm confused about what to think about it.

Ha Nintendo, always where you're weren't expecting it...

Which was why he was presenting all the recent NOA Nintendo Driect?

They probably just realized he's more likeable than Reggie.

(also the stuff he presents in the US is mostly stuff that overlaps with Japan stuff, if there as a ND with mostly US exclusive stuff Reggie'd probably do it)

Ok. If Iwata has finally wake up and is planning to go after western third-parties and is wants to rebuild NoA's development teams and second-parties, then this is a good decision.

If 'general manager of the General Affairs Division' at NCL is a promotion above NoA CEO, it explains a lot about NoA's position in the pecking order ;)

This is either the best move or the worst move.

Yeah... either he is going to bring NOA down to their knees by not understanding the western market, or this is going to be a stroke of genius...

Either way, this at least confirms what most of the NeoGaf users have been speculating all along, that Reggie has little to no pull at all in the company at all.

This is panic Nintendo baby! Nothing makes sense, things don't matter, it's going to be one hell of a ride wherever this buggy goes!

i'm hoping this means they're going to try and rebuild the american side of things that's gone missing over the last decade. it might help explain the problems with shipping recently if there was a major shakeup behind the scenes. transitions aren't fun.

Its not like NoA is competant as is. This is a good move sure Iwata can do better than whats currently happening

Possibly. Something needs sorted in the US though - situations like the one they're in with Amazon need sorted ASAP, and not allowed to fester for years.

The move will support the company’s unified global strategy

if you want a unified global strategy remove the region lock on both 3ds and wii u!!!!!!!

Let's hope Iwata goes crazy with the localizations.

I have the feeling good things are ahead in that regard (if only to soften the blow of the loss of western third parties)

Stupid question coming in 3....2....1....

Does this mean he has to move to Seattle to be near the main american headquarters?

On one hand, its hilarious that they won't promote Reggie to full CEO. On the other hand, by removing the middle man, Reggie is effectively assuming that position. I wonder if the NoA CEO has to be Japanese and that's why they're doing this.

I don't get how this changes anything, really. Wasn't NOA just an NOJ puppet anyway? That's what GAF told me.

I will never understand why people here think NOA isn't exactly this, a puppet to it's master in NCL. Reggie has practically no say in what gets ported to the USA, that is all on NCL.

Didn't see that one coming.

Potentially, this seems like a very good thing. Guess time will tell.

this is a great move - something I have been calling for a long time as NCL expands its on-shore presence in the largest gaming market - i just hope he can do this and split time between Japan and the US while maintaining all of his "soft" commitments that has allowed Nintendo to drastically improve its third party relationships in Japan (Iwata Asks, etc.)

my sense is for him to make such a huge commitment of time - he feels that Japan is now kicking into auto-drive and they have the software they need there and he needs to spend more time in America shoring up development support and deepening Nintendo's relationships with third party developers and retailers (no doubt people are going to see this as a huge commitment for the NCL President to be taking on CEO responsibilities - will really motivate NOA and retail/development partners) - so I am excited to see if he makes decisions like setting up EAD Seattle for example (or turning Retro into EAD Austin - but I doubt that, since Nintendo treats Retro as an independent studio and allows them to self-manage since they don't like to micro manage)

That said, Reggie still needs to go - Iwata needs to clean house

He will probably spend 25-50% of his time in America now in the medium to long term - early on he might be in the States 100% of the time - common for Asian CEOs to move to the market they are most interested in full-time for at least a year - I think Iwata will probably travel around the US, start cleaning house in the first year, and shake up their recruiting and expand internal studios
