Game Informer June Cover: Infamous Second Son/PlayStation 4 Issue (30 Pages)

gofreak

GAF's Bob Woodward
DriveClub details?

I've only skimmed so far but some bits:

- cars will take damage, but it won't affect handling
- AI lies somewhere between an arcade and simulation racer
- in terms of additional cars, it will apparently be one of Sony's 'biggest dlc games'
- tracks are on open landscapes with large draw distances
- you can play offline or as a single player if you wish
- you can create race events of varying types and size, configure time of day, weather etc. have sprawling multi-day events with hundreds of teams

Some included manufacturers are listed...not sure if it's already known. There's 3 accompanying screenshots, I think new. The cars are gorgeous.

"Did we consider it [always-online]? No, we didn't consider it. The main reason being that many countries don't have robust internet connections. It m akes sense for people to have internet connections to play online games, but for offline games there are many countries that we saw do not really have robust internet... We didn't even consider that [always-online]."

cant be quoted enough.

A couple of other things I glanced:

- According to the developer, Blacklight Retribution on PS4 should offer a 'healthy' visual jump over the PC version, because they don't have to deal with minimum specs and different configs

- Mark Cerny reckons that PS4 saved about a year of development time on Knack, thanks to it being a lot easier to go from concept to implementation on the machine (but of course he would say this as platform evangelist ;))

- Some info on touchpad usage - Infamous currently uses it to build up 'smoke power' in the player and for example, for flicking up to open up a compartment on a machine before tapping the trigger button to fire and destroy it. Drive Club is using it currently just for menu navigation, but considering applying it to cameras though they haven't decided for sure yet

As for the new thread suggestions...I'm not really sure what kind of thread one would make. These are just small little nuggets here and there :)

No more info was given on it. It was mentioned in response to a question about new business models and what Sony is or isn't open to. He said Sony was working on a unannounced F2P game, and were open to everything. But that currently they had no subscription-based games in development.

None of this touchpad stuff seems interesting in the slightest

Yoshida bits.

"We are developing a free-to-play type of game*, but we haven't announced it yet," said Yoshida. "We don't have any subscription-based games in development, but we are not crossing out any type of game."

*Depending on when this interview was conducted, that free-to-play game may or may not be Doki-Doki Universe, one of the indie games announced for PS3/PS4/PSV today.

"We have the same level of strong commitment [as we did with PS3] to continue to produce first-party titles."

"We believe in a good balance [between new IPS and existing franchises], continuing with some of the franchises while at the same time trying out new IPs and new ideas... Both are of great importance."

"Did we consider it [always-online]? No, we didn't consider it. The main reason being that many countries don't have robust internet connections. It m akes sense for people to have internet connections to play online games, but for offline games there are many countries that we saw do not really have robust internet... We didn't even consider that [always-online]."
This is all great to read.

Its definitely real. No doubt about it. Water looks like that all the time. I would know, as I occasionally go fishing early in the morning in the bay, and when theres little wind on the water, its very glassy and looks exactly like that. Not to mention the city looks exactly like that too. Lived in Seattle for a couple years, looking across from Alki beach the resemblance is too perfect.

Thanks for sharing. Loving every bit of it. I'm buying this game no question about it.

Nice interview with Media Molecule too. Clarifies some things. He makes it quite clear it's a 'game' where you make things others can play or experience - be it a gameplay experience, or a music video or whatever. Although he leaves it up in the air about whether it'll be wrapped up in a specific type of game ala LBP or be a more purely open creation tool. He says they're looking into using the Dualshock 4 also as an alternative to Move - that obviously the things people make will at least have to be playable with a DS4, whatever about the create side of things.

Does he mention anything about the advantages of the new camera?

Also any further complementary info about their next project would also be appreciated. Thanks.

What's the problem , lol

There are people looking forward to infamous 3 ( wait it's second son )
Anyway. There is no problem to have more info about games we don't know much yet.

I'm actually happy ( to see more games )

-_-
Do you know how much work goes into making sure your game works across DirectX 9/10/11 or OpenGL 2.1/3.2/4.2? Blacklight Retribution is a free to play game so they want to make sure it works for machines low and high.

Really surprised at this thread. Guess it's because I knew well enough not to expect Final Fantasy Versus XIII or something crazy, but I'm excited for inFamous and new info about it is always good (in addition to the PS4 in general).

Wow! Congrats Sucker Punch, I guess.

We're getting to the point where every footage of a PS4 game will be considered real or CG until launch, huh?

Yeah why would anybody care about 7 upcoming games. They are all t3h scuk am I right?

No they are all probably going to be good but I'm only really interested in Destiny and to an extent Infamous.

I, and from the looks of it a lot of others, were hoping for an actual reveal. You know, something we haven't seen at all yet? Obviously it was very wishful thinking but it would have been cool to get a reveal on some games we either haven't heard of, or games that aren't AAA/to cool for you kind of stuff. It is Game Informer though so:

Still no new info about Drive Club?

Play offline in single-player
- Also has a big online focus
- User-created race challenges encouraged
- Everything you do is tracked by a single profile in single-plaer
- With teams, accomplishments are funneled together into the larger success of the group
- Three-on-three team challenges included
- Create events based on different parameters: car type, track, time of day, weather, etc.
- Can make lengthy multi-stage events that take place over a number of days
- Participants can span in the thousands with hundreds of different teams
- Win smaller accolades to add team’s XP
- These include clocking the fastest lap, drifting 1,000 meters, going 0 to 60 the fastest
- Use apps outside of DriveClub to make challenges as well
- Spread accomplishments and media through social media chanels
- Evolution will be making its own season of league racing through weekly online race events
- Visuals and gameplay are equally important
- DualShock 4′s touchpad is used for menu navigation, for the most part
- Touchpad also being considered for cameras
- Not a simulation-based racer
- Damage cars take won’t determine how they handle
- Koenigsegg, Maserati, Pagani, Hennessey are represented
- Start off with slightly less glamorous cars
- Race and increase fame/funds to gain access to better cars
- More people will watch you race as well
- More cars will be added through DLC; will be “one of the biggest titles for Sony from a DLC perspective”

here you go.

Wtf? really?

Yes, really. What is your point?

As I said in another reply, Destiny and Infamous are the only games in this "reveal" that are interesting to me personally.

I was hoping for something out of the blue, maybe Persona 5, more Evil Within info, Smash Bros 4(i wish)
It always happens when the big websites/magazines have an exciting reveal. We all get hyped it could be something not yet announced, and then are almost always dissapointed.

If you are happy with this news then that is awesome for you. A lot of new info for ya.

As someone who works on the game, PC games always have the problem of dealing with a minimum spec, which takes a fairly large amount of resources. Add the fact that BLR is a F2P game, makes it even more important for the game to operate on an even larger number of machines.

PC you are always going to have someone pushing the envelop like Crysis 3 or something, but typical everyone has min spec on their mind.

Having a fixed platform also allows us to dial in every detail. There isn't any second guessing because we know the hardware of every user.

I knew it wasn't going to be a single megaton game reveal.

BUT Sony is going hard in advance of the new Xbox announcement. I'd expect them to be keeping something up their sleeve to announce between the Microsoft event and E3 just to knock a bit of wind out of the Microsoft sails, and then some additional stuff at E3 obviously.

Let me ask you this: wouldn't you rather have any big surprises saved for E3 and not for some GameStop-sanctioned magazine?

Why would they be expecting that?

Because it's fun to get hyped up about stuff that could happen. We know we most likely won't get any brand new reveals, but at the same time we get disappointed even though we knew that lol. Is it dumb? Kind of. But it is still fun and that is what matters.
