CVG secret WiiU news follow-up Rumor: 3D Mario to launch by October

An argument could be made that Sunshine is right after World, because at the end of World they all go on a vacation.

But Luigi's Mansion hadn't happened yet at that point, had it? Cause Sunshine is after Luigi's Mansion (As the game references Luigi's Mansion twice).

Yeah I know Mario has no real timeline...
unlike Zelda

So we've all commented on gameplay ideas. But where do you think this will be set. What could show some spectacular showpieces for the Wii U in a Mario world.

Mario 64: Mushroom Kingdom
Sunshine: Beach
Galaxy: Space
Super Mario 3D Land: A 3D representation of 2D Mario

Worms is competitive. Passing the controller in Mario just lets another person have a go. It doesn't impact either person's game experience.
Mario could be competitive too. Time attack mode, there you go.

There's obviously other ways to implement "pass the controller" multiplayer, split up sections of the level for each character for instance.

Yep that's why I think they'll do a light/dark world mechanic. One for gamepad One for TV. Different aspects of levels for the different people. Switching involved (real time changing). And allows focused level design.

Seriously. Nintendo can't and won't do it. They think people still play local multi :lol

That's the whole point, they might implement local multiplayer on this scale. I can't see online mutiplayer like this. It'd be hard to implement.

It's the hook withe the system as well, asymmetric mutiplayer.

But execution, that's a whole different story. It may indeed be very difficult. but then again they now have a more capable system hardware wise.

And people do still play local mutiplayer, why wouldn't they. I'm a bit confused there.

This makes me sad.

It's getting harder and harder to find local multi/coop games to play with my girlfriend on console. It's becoming less and less frequent of an option these days.

It's one of the things I admire Nintendo for still pushing.

Believe it or not, people still do. And online MP is a thing for Nintendo games. Animal Crossing, Pokemon, Mario Kart, Mario Tennis and so on. But who am I talking to...

Most of my multiplayer time is spent in the same room with my three kids on the same console. It is the BEST multiplayer in the world, bar none.

Losers with their headsets in basements cannot come close. Sorry. :p

Thank god.
I can't even remember what was the last time I played some online multiplayer. Played Trine 2, NSMBU, Lego LOTR and other stuff with my girlfriend, enjoyed them a lot.
Can't wait to play games with my children.

I love the idea of having a 3D Mario and Luigi multiplayer platformer, but let's be real, guys. Ain't gonna happen. On the other hand, I think it very likely for there to be some type of asymmetric multiplayer included. Not only is it one of the central concepts of the system, but the Mario Galaxy games already featured it.

I don't think most of GAF can relate, but I completely agree.

Local multiplayer >>>>>>>>>>>>>> online multiplayer

People need local multiplayer, because people have kids, girlfriends, wifes, friends.

And at the same time the Sony and Microsoft ditch local multiplayer, Nintendo have a system with two fucking screens, perfect for local multiplayer.

I want an open world Mario game, call it Super Mario Sunshine step 2.0. Anything in the mould of NSMB or 3D Land will get a pass from me. I'd like to invest in a really meaty Mario game, I like off-line co-op as much as the next guy, but my schedule doesn't allow much videogame socialising this year (too much travelling, working, family, etc.).

If you can't tell, I really miss Super Mario Sunshine, it's such a fantastic game, unlike any other 3D platformer Nintendo have ever done.

Having 1 without the other can suck, lets say you want to play with a friend, family member, partner, etc but you can't because their is no local multiplayer, or lets say you have nobody to play with so you want to play online but you can't because their is no online system.

Having both is better than just having one.

You guys dog piling on Mileena are missing the point. Couch CooP is the best coop but it is not even an option for a lot of people. Not everyone has the luxury of local friends or family. Online multiplayer is far more inclusive to a larger demographic of people. No one is suggesting removing Local multi, not sure how you guys even perceived that.

i dunno how this relates to what was being said at all. you think 3d mario is gonna get online multiplayer? lol

The fact that such a suggestion is apparently laughable is everything currently wrong with Nintendo. If it has multiplayer at all, no reason it couldn't be online.

Edit: And how does my comment directly supporting Mileena have nothing to do with what's being said, really?

I moved halfway across the country for a job. I can't play local multi with my friends because they all also grew up and moved on with life. Therefor we play games online. You crazies defending Nintendo for being too incompetent to implement such a simple option are just part of the reason the company lives in the past. Thanks, really.

Why can't we have both? Internet is important but local is superior if you have access to it. They're equal. Or at least they should be.

Umm...Mileena said "They think people still play local multi :lol"

I don't think ANYONE missed that point.

I had a dream about E3 2013 (yes, I am that cool), and it was Nintendo showing off 3D Mario and I was on GAF (my dreams about video games) and everyone was extremely excited to see it and it turns out to just be a more 3D version of NSMBU with better graphics...We all had meltdowns.

Don't think anyone's defending it. They're just saying people still do it, and in large numbers with family.

I for one would like it to be online if it works with their concept, but I think it won't simply because asymmetric mutiplayer in your living room is what they're pushing with the system, evidenced by Nintnedoland.

Super Mario 3D Land?

Why don't you ask these guys, apparently online is the devil and will rape your children.
Well you laughed at the thought of people still playing local multiplayer first.

I'm pretty sure that makes you worse.

I'd rather have local multiplayer on console games if given the choice, but that's because I enjoy playing games with my girlfriend. I'd rather have both though if possible, and, for most games, it should be possible.

It's an open question to everyone. I just find it ridiculous that that people can't imagine a well done offline that also works online. The lag matters even less with 3D Mario and so what if it isn't perfect? I bet that people who want online know the limits.

Why is multiplayer being talked about in a 3D Mario thread? I mean I know Nintendo has dropped the ball with online multiplayer for some games but 3D Mario really?

They have mentioned wanting to do a co-op 3D Mario in past. It's just that people want to see an online element too considering that this is the year 2013.

Would love to see a proper Mario 64-esque game that's doesn't involve putting a "U" in the title somewhere.

But it's all about U. U Know.

It has been hinted heavily as a failed concept for many 3D mario games due to a failure in getting a cohesive objective of both players to complete a level and having both on the same screen.

Nintendo like coming back to failed concepts and turning them into reality.

It worked for FSA, except in single player it was flawed.

As well as this the system's philosihpy and the game pad as well as tons of Wii motes nunchuks being available, it's a very strong likelihood.

there's different tiers of multiplayer games.

1. FPS/racing/fighting games
2. party games
3. co-op

#1 works really well online and is the online that most games include. i think it's just because people are so used to these 3 genres being online that they somehow think all other games are created equally in regards to online. nintendo does put online in these games. i enjoyed mario kart online a lot.

#2 and #3 are much more intimate. they work fantastic online in groups of pre-existing friends or communities. how do you include functionality that only allows the online mode to work when you fit these requirements? you can't without huge backlash. lots of games do it anyways, but it isn't something you can quality check. nintendo quality checks pretty hard, which is why i don't believe games that fit in this category will release under nintendo for a long time

One of the problems pervading all of gaming right now is the thought that everything needs to be online.

It doesn't. Games can still be incredible when played alone or with friends locally, and if the design of the game dictates that, shoehorning in online is a mistake. It will bring down the almighty metacritic rating where leaving it out and focusing on the single player or local multiplayer alone and not giving a hint of online would not.

I'd argue that having good online (i.e. that you can play an FPS online nearly flawless) is less of an option for much more people than it is finding someone to play local multiplayer with.

So any time you wanna play some multi you just call your boys up and they come over? No wonder there's only 1000 people playing Black Ops U, everyone's on dat local multi jawn!

No? I just sit next to my girlfriend and we play.

Couch co-op/multiplayer and online multiplayer can co-exist and, in some case, it can even make online better; being able to play Black Ops online with couch co-op/multiplayer is super fun.
