Xbox One is REQUIRED to be online at least once every 24 hours.

The prophecies are true. Heaven help us all.

Serious question, not trying to troll...hoping someone can flesh it out a bit more for me:

Why is everyone so angry that you have to connect at least once a day?

I understand the Sim City fiasco, but I would imagine Microsoft won't have this problem? Or maybe they will?

I really don't know. All my current consoles are connected to the internet so I'm not sure what the problem is.

Nobody in the military stationed overseas will own an XBox One, that's for starters.

I have no allegiance to any console but this is just a giant cluster fuck and a fairly large "fuck you" to the gaming community.

I missed the conference, i thought it said 6 but i guess that was london time or something. I come to check gaf a few hours before i thought it was going to happen to see where i could watch and gaf was down at the time. Then i knew sometime was up, no way it would be down unless the event happened or was happening. Everything im seeing seems like one big joke, like it was done on purpose for a laugh. I didnt think it could possibly be this bad even at like the worst case.

People who are saying "who cares, my internet hasn't been out for that long in years!" are beyond simple minded. The world doesn't revolve around you. I was moving into a new place this year and used my PS3 at my new place when I didn't have internet for a few weeks. And that's a simple example.

GG Microsoft, no re.

So connect them?

Yes, I understand why people object to this on principle but let's be pragmatic about it. It's not a big deal.

Not a big deal?

Look at it this way...

You'll pay top prices for a game on the XO, less say $60.

This $60 gives you permission to play the game while your console can check in with the XO DRM servers.

At this end of the console lifecycle of the XO, Microsoft decide to sunset the DRM servers.

All those games you bought, are gone as the XO can't check in with the DRM servers which have been deactivated. Your XO console and it's gaming collection is completely worthless.

How do you like them apples?

If you have had a blizzard or hurricane in your area and it has knocked out the power for a significant amount of time you have bigger things to worry about than your video game console.

When this happened to me last year what should I have been worrying about instead of playing some videogames?

So what happens 10 years from now when I want to play all my Xbox One games? Going to have to connect it to the internet? What if my router no longer supports my connection? Am I fucked?

You'll still have internet so don't worry.

Now thinking that Microsoft will still be running the servers on the other end out of the kindness of their hearts is another matter.

Microsoft doesn't care 10 years from now.... they will have another console for you to buy. If anything keeping older games means they get less money.

Personally I see games as an investment as well as entertainment. That means the Xbox One is a no go for me.

What if money is tight and I can't afford home internet anymore and just decide to use public wifi at coffee shops and restaurants? I can't even play a fucking game that I've already bought? Fuck this bullshit. PS4 all the way. No reason to support this bullshit at all.

If you wanted to play a game in the first place you would need to be connected to the internet for that first installation anyways. Unless your plan was to take the Xbox down to the coffee shop with every new purchase this 24 hour limit does nothing for this situation.

How will they know whether to charge you the "used game pass" fee if you're not online. Obvious that's why. So glad I gave up consoles.

Not too fussed. I don't think there has been a period in the past 10 years when my consoles have been completely offline for more than 24 hours. If it was a constant connection, that would be another story.

Still sucks for people who may not want to connect online.

The funniest thing about this is that MS is basically getting all of the bad PR. Even if Sony was to have something similar, the pain will be alleviated thanks to this disaster. Just how poor can you be at handling PR with such a sensitive issue, and a console unveil? Man, this is idiotic to witness.

Fighting game tournaments.

Playing the XB1 10 years from now, am I going to need to connect it to the internet to just play those games? Assuming no backward compatibility with XB2+

Taking the console to my parents house for the weekend.

I also like the irony of this statement:

I bolded all-in-one entertainment. Really, MS? So I can throw out all my other boxes! I can't wait to play all my XBLA games on the new system since it's a gaming system and you've claimed it's all in one. But, wait... I can't play my old games? So, I need to keep TWO boxes under my TV to play my 350 DLable games? Not just two boxes but to gaming boxes. I guess you just meant all-in-two.

Really hard to buy into that philosophy, MS, when you can't even support it for GAMING.

Don't forget the external hard drive and cable box.

Basically, my objections to always online are:

1) I want to be able to play if there's a blip in my connection or I need to reboot my router. This is not fine for true always online, but it fine for 24 hours.

2) I want to be able to play if there's a day-long or multi-day ISP issue. This may or may not be fine for a 24 hour timer, but is fine for Steam's month-ish timer.

3) I want to be able to play when I am moving and don't yet have a new ISP. This is not fine for a 24 hour timer, but is fine for Steam's month-ish timer.

4) I want to be able to have the option of playing once the company running the show shuts down online services. This is not fine for any service that requires online authentication ever.

The ONLY difference is the 2 weeks vs. 24 hour time period. This DRM strategy is literally exactly alike in every other area.

I still don't know where that 2 week period came from. I've been offline for months and been fine... Is this some new thing?

EDIT: Yea that thread.. there's someone in the comments that says 6+ months. Bullshit statement to make this look "better".

This 100% false. I have opened up Steam, been notified my Internet isn't working, and then chose the prompt to open in offline mode. Maybe there is a setting you would have had to turn on in the past but as long as you do that right now you will be able to open in offline mode in the future.

to be fair, Steam offline mode isn't perfect and does have problems like that pop up

Hey I completely understand where you're coming from.

I'm just saying that day-to-day I don't see this as a big deal.

I also have faith that a solution will be provided to avoid the above scenario before Microsoft sunset the servers.

I guess I get why people are annoyed, was just putting forth my personal view.
