PS4 full page advert in UK newspaper, "Coming 2013"

There was a thread on here last month about them having an ad during it, but it wasn't said if it would be short, long or a simple "Sponsored by" one.

I hope we get one similar to the opening of the February event. This ad seems similar to that one.

Sony advertise in some way during all Champions League matches. I've noticed some of the bigger games having game ads - Assassin's Creed 4, etc, I've noticed, but not platform-centric.

I could see them doing an ad for Last of Us. It's out soon, doesn't seem to be a lot of buzz in the mainstream, and it looks really impressive.

Sony hasn't dropped a ball in this sweepstakes yet. Not surprised about the Europe focus for this year.

If they encounter supply issues, they should allocate as much stock as possible to North America and Europe as a priority. I'm not saying don't launch in Japan with the rest of the world but that's a market you can effectively starve initially due to the absence of Microsoft, comparable hardware or even any mass interest in console gaming for that matter.

The one thing I can think of is if there was some breakdown in communication between Sony and a more external marketing agency, and the latter just took the '2013' thing from the Feb announcement and ran with it in their ad without really running it by Sony.

However, otoh, I don't think Sony would be greenlighting a newspaper or TV marketing budget for PS4 at this point if it wasn't coming until 2014. A Champions League ad touting this would be harder to fathom not being run by Sony fully.

I guess we shall see!

I would say this is the best official confirmation yet. An agency most definitely won't run an ad in a big newspaper without documented signoff from the client, in fact the agency doing the ad won't submit it to the newspaper at all but to either Sony or someone like Carat who then submits the ad.

And my take is that Sony would not run something like this unless they had a high confidence and a clear plan to launch this year, it's very easy to drop that one line out of the ad in case there is uncertainty.

CVG and MCV seem to think this 'confirms' a 2013 EU launch. Not in my eyes. It doesn't confirm anything.
Surely it does? It says

"PS4
Coming 2013"

It also says "This year..." twice in the text above. I don't see how they could be clearer that it's releasing this year? If it isn't out this year, that's one of the most misleading ads I've ever seen.

2013?

Adverts like that are exactly why playstation dominates in Europe

They totally play into the football crowd. Also why Fifa sells more on PS than XBox

I love the smell of new gen - it's been too long (sorry WiiU)

I love the quantity of power marketing words used; "greatest","amaze","ultimate","push the boundaries","wonder","legends"

I can't help but think the marketing would be more effective if they just left it as:

I wonder if it'll be any good

PS4

Nah, it's also supposed to be about the Champions League final of which Sony are the biggest sponsor. Read it in those terms and notice the UCL logo below and it will make sense.

But we mustn't forget what happened with PS3 and the campaign SCEE launched. :(

I hope Sony learned a huge fucking lesson from the PS3... Advertise the shit out of your console! MS did and look what happened. This is encouraging, plus a little up yours to the Xbox1 announcement.

HOLY FUCK... I just realised this means Australia will get it THIS YEAR TOO!

I was half expecting to see a little * next to 2013 with a small print saying "Only in US and Japan".

Good thing it doesnt!

Eurgh.

Rowing hype back a bit.

I hope this is just Sony's way of saying 'we want to wait to confirm this at E3', but OTOH they may just be cheeky enough to tease this this without even any internal confirmation of Europe being 2013.

I thought tha sounded close to a confirmation to me. I have an idea of how PR in these companies work, but Edge is a UK publication, Metro is a UK newspaper. I think there is a very high chance now PS4 will release in Europe in 2013. There is definitely reason to be skeptical though, going by their past lack of effort in that direction.

On the assumption that the CL advert also says coming 2013 there is no way they would let it air if it wasn't true for Europe too.

A shit ton of people are going to see that advert live at home and in bars and pubs and then online over the next few days.

Great news. I think this will tip the scales in PS4's favour definitely, especially with a lot of the Xbox One's features being exclusive to the US. People in the UK don't care about NFL for the most part, we can't get Xbox TV, who knows what else will fall behind the Gold paywall that we can't access but still pay the same price of subscription for?

Xbox don't care about Euro people. Sony will be right there to scoop them up.

Nah, they just don't want to pre-reveal any information before their UCL advert airs tomorrow I bet. Only one place has even had the rumour, so if there is an advert Sony must have bought the space through an associate and kept it all very quiet indicating that they want to ensure maximum impact and no leaks.

The message in the advert is consistent with that.

If they have this message on the electronic ad boards at the Champions League final (which they'd be silly not to, really), it'll generate a massive amount of interest.

Yup. "PS4 Coming in 2013" on the advert boards would be a massive advert for them. We know they did it for other matches in regard to the Feb reveal so they have form in this area.

Think it'll be same story with the CL ad. If it mentions '2013', Sony will just say 'restating what we said in Feb'.

They'll only get down to the nitty gritty on explicit territory confirmations at E3 or maybe even later.

Just hope for their PR's sake that this and the CL ad are being run in the full internal knowledge of a 2013 Euro release. Reckless teasing otherwise :p
