Every episode I see makes me long even more for a televisual version of the mighty Malazan Book of the Fallen.

Malazan would have to be an animated series IMO. I suppose it MIGHT be able to be done in a Spartacus fashion, but even that would be hard.

Also what you probably don't realize is that for most of us book readers, spoilers being in here hurts us just as it hurts you, but in a different way. Many of us are pretty damn vigilant to be on the lookout for them and protect you from them.

There will always be assholes who will try to spoil stuff. The kind of people who do will always pretend to be non-book readers. Forbidding bookreaders to post here will not stop that.
As long as you have sensible and nice bookreaders in the thread who will 'take out' these arses, I think that's a good thing. However they should be sensible and report it to a mod, not discuss it in the topic.

Fake non-bookreader: I think Mellisandre will spawn an army of shadow tapdancers who will take over the seven kingdoms with the power of dance

Wrong reaction from a book-reader:
You read the books...don't spoil it for the good people here

Good reaction from a book-reader:
PM to mod..."this poster has definitely read the books... he is spoiling stuff for people.

Why do you think the 5th books is called "Dance with Dragons" ?

King in the North supporting checking in.

"Why should they rule over me and mine from some flowery seat in the South? What do they know of the Wall or the Wolfswood? Even their gods are wrong! Why shouldn't we rule ourselves again? It was the dragons we bowed to... and now the dragons are dead! There sits the only king I mean to bend my knee to-the King in the North!"

You best believe there'll be some crows eating in the next book.

Oh shit, I guess
Sam survives.

Gamasutra.
Just watched the series from first episode to the latest episode over the past 2-3 weeks. Completely hooked, and caught up, just in time for S3 to end. Yay!

Never read the books.

Question

Is season 4 supposed to cover the second half of ASOS?

Yes. Supposedly bits and pieces overlap from each season, but generally it's:

Season 1 = A Game of Thrones
Season 2 = A Clash of Kings
Season 3 = 1/2 A Storm of Swords
Season 4 = 2/2 A Storm of Swords

Reasoning for the split being that A Storm of Swords is apparently very dense in plot developments, and they didn't feel they could fit the narrative cohesively into ten episodes, not without making massive concessions.

That leaves A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons, and then the unfinished The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring.

AFFC and ADWD will work a bit differently to the previous adaptations, because (I haven't read the books, but this is their structure)
unlike the other novels both of these happen mostly concurrently. 2/3rds of ADWD show perspectives of events happening at the same time as AFFC. So whatever they do with Season 5 and Season 6 will be bits and pieces from each book in each season.

And that leaves the last two books, which obviously wont be written by the time the series catches up. GRRM has apparently told the showrunners how he'd like the story to play out.

I thought he told them how it plays out in case he dies. Would be... very interesting if they last two seasons came out before the last two books

I don't see them pulling only two seasons out of A Feast For Crows and A Dance With Dragons. Adapting those could be 4 seasons, easily. I'd imagine we'll get at least 3 seasons though.

Anyway, just my thoughts! We should probably drop the book talk though :D

I think you're right, he told them the main thrust of the ending and where things are going in case anything happened to him, so they could finish the show.

GRRM still intends to finish A Dream of Spring before Season 7 or 8 (whichever season is last), but at this point it looks more and more likely that the show will overtake GRRM's books towards the end.

If that's the case then they've obviously just decided to make up whatever ending they want. That should be interesting.

No way, even if the show passes the books towards the end, the writers will have access to whatever Martin has written to that point, and what is not finished Martin will fill in the blanks for them as far as where the show needs to end up.

We'll see if Martin gets that final book in any sort of shape by then, I guess. I'm sure he knows how it will end but how it does so could be up in the air. It's not like Martin hasn't written himself into corners before.

I thought they've already said it's going to go for 7 seasons total.

They say this now, but even that leaves four more years of a popular television show running, and I can't see them rigidly sticking to this goal for that long, not with things changing as they do.

That also only leaves three seasons to cover two written books, and two unwritten books worth of content. I've heard some people say AFFC and ADWD could be adapted into one season? I don't know. Given the last two haven't been written, but anything could happen.

All they need is The Winds of Winter to come out before ADWD's adaptation has been penned, have it as narratively dense as ASOS, and that seven season plan will go out the window.

I would bet cash money that George R.R. Martin has already told the showrunners the basic conclusion to the series.

How we get there may still be in the works.

I'm sad Renly's gone. He was pretty cool.

Renly deserved better than death by shadow queef.

Yes, I said it.

Right now, I'm supporting Robb, but I'm concerned his decisions are going to come back to haunt him. I love Stannis, but he seems depleted this season. I want Season 2 Stannis back.

I'm not sure if this is okay to post, but I think I can comfortably say that you don't want more than two seasons of FfC/DwD. They're both really slow.

Where have you been man!

Well, better late than never as they say. You're better off than all those poor saps who haven't jumped in yet.

That antler crown must be the most uncomfortable thing to put on your head.

Imagine wearing that while on the iron throne. I'd rather sit in a briar patch.

Considering the stuff he's said about various story endings (Lost and BSG), he better deliver.

I don't think they're slow, except for a couple characters. Anyway, there's an absolute ton going on in those books so unless the cut some pretty significant stuff, I can't see them squeezing it into 2 seasons for both of those books. Hell, ADWD alone is the longest book of the series.

Anyway, from here I'm gonna drop it :) Happy to discuss it further in one of the book threads. :D
