Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

I have a reliable connection.

I don't buy used.

I don't sell my games.

Ugh. This just comes off as the "if you have nothing to hide.." comments regarding the US government spying on basically everything you do.

Yes we get it, you can use the console within the confides of this system, but it's still a big step down for consumer rights, and just bending over and taking it isn't good.

And we're still ignoring the fact that all games might be useless the day the 24-hour check in server is gone.

Hey guys remember all those people yelling in everyone's ear against the torrent of anti-Xbox One posts about how we were all just commenting on speculation that meant nothing and wait until E3?

Good times, good times.

Now that we know it doesn't matter jackshit what games Xbox One gets at E3 thanks to it being the worst console of all time, it really does free up my time to pay attention to Wii U, 3DS, Vita and PS4 more closely.

Hey remember when they said that they "We're listening" and then didn't change anything. Good ol' Microsoft.

HOW CAN... ANYONE be happy about this situation at all? It is a clear disaster and supporting it only means the end of being able to do any of this at all after Xbone.

It's a goddamned slippery slope.

I think we've just found out why the Wii U isnt getting any third party support. This is a deal struck by publishers with both Microsoft and Sony. There is absolutely no way a publisher is going to release a non DRM game on one console and not the other. We might as well just get used to this.
We're all screwed, aren't we?

how many people are going to get ripped off from buying used at garage sales/craigs list/ ebay without knowing the rules?

So the most important thing here is you cannot purchase used games. Period. You can "trade-in" your game to select retailers, which really is just revoking the license from your account. But they never mention purchasing used games whatsoever.

You can trade, you can trade-in. You cannot purchase.

The family thing sounds so exploitable, I can basically have 10 friends who can log-in have access to my games at any time?

Then why the hell are there used game restrictions and 24h online checks? People will abuse this wholesale.

I'm just saying why it doesn't bother me. I'm not saying that people should not be perturbed. The will voice their disapproval the harshest way you can in the market, abstaining from buying the thing.

All I'm saying it that these ''measures'' don't affect me in the slightest.

I have smartphone if I need to reauthenticate. Plus I can then catch up on my other consoles. I'd be fine. I haven't had my connection drop for more than 24 hours in 8 years, however.

But don't you have principles? Not every change is going to directly affect you, but the idea that these changes are needed or wanted doesn't affect you in a negative way?

I'm starting to fear for my favorite local game shop. Part of the reason I can go in there and buy retro games is that they also sell modern games to other people. I don't want to lose Video Game Wizards.

The future seems sort of crappy.

i buy 2 consoles for each system for me and my wife... is the family sharing enabled for both consoles? (like buy 1 game, share between 2 consoles?)

It sounds like it? If your accounts are linked as a family account.

I'm not sure it'll allow both of you to play it online at the same time, might just be offline.

Holy shit so if you're at a friends house you can only play the game for a fucking hour?

What the fuck? Fuck you MS. That's just ridiculous. Holy shit.

We need some clarification about the family sharing thing, the wording is quite vague and a little bit misleading.

Up to ten members of your family can log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One. Just like today, a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games. You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time.

Let's take a look;
- Up to 10 members of your family - how does Microsoft know which are our 'family' - does this mean only accounts originally registered on the same console as the shared library?
- And 'any one of' - so including yourself, only one other person can access your shared library at any given time?
- There is no indication that you can both play the same game at any given time.

Q for all gaf members!: Would you support a system licensed by microsoft that lets you RENT GAMES digitally from their servers for 10$ a week.

Just like blockbuster or rogers.

SO you can buy the games you love, and rent the games you wanna try out?.

I think it would be brilliant.

With Bandwidth caps and the size of games nowadays I don't think this would be very good for most people.

Of course it does. What would be the point of installing games if it didn't. XB One doesn't stream games.

How does the cloud work? Isn't it computing over a network? In that case it is streaming the game via servers. Unless i'm totally thinking this wrong?

Read my other post.

Basically, though. It seems MS sees that gaming is going the DD route and this is how they will manage licenses. I don't get the used game DRM, however. I can see this system being fine for DD only.

Not shocked to be honest but policies like this are the death nail in indie game stores which are already getting screwed left right and centre by retailer exclusives and etailers.

I know a lot of folks are saying this doesn't effect them but I for one can not support any company, Microsoft or Sony, that want's to promote this as a practice whether it effects me or not.

Doesn't sound quite as bad as feared. Still not great.

What's up with this sharing between your family thing. Is there anything to stop me a my 9 best buds from sharing a live account and taking it in turns to buy games?

Because they'll be an authorized reseller.
But the cut they probably receive is gonna be crap so your statement still stands.

Not only that but it will be a per-publisher policy on top of this. The publishers may just decide simply not to allow gamestop to take trade ins.

Awful, it's exactly what people were complaining about from the start, they've heard the feedback and simply tried wording it better. Not that I think it's particularly well worded even after this whole time they've had to work on it. You can pretty much guarantee they won't be backing away from this plan though, for all the negativity around it, they're still sticking to it.

We can at least share digitally bought copies with family members and give the license to a friend one right? That's the only new advantage I can see. Unless I am misinterpreting and it still only applies to disc based games.

Wait, will participating retailers have to check every game to see that it hasn't been given to one other person already? Does the disc not work if it's been 'activated' twice? Aren't there going to be people who purchase a game 'used' that will not be able to actually access the content?

And what is this share your games with 10 family members? How does the Xbone know who your family members are? Can you play the same game at the same time as someone else or is it all just from a single console? Doesn't this mean less copies of games will be sold, which is one of the reasons all these parameters for reselling games are being put in place?

This is all just confusing bullshit that doesn't need to exist. The fact that so many of us are still confused by this 'clarification' is just further proof that this is all just a load of shit. I can't believe some people are okay with it.

Me being in the military with very very spotty internet; I guess I'm not getting one. Hopping off the Xbox train for this one I suppose.

Hmm? Why would they allow a trade-in if you couldn't buy it as a used product? Why would any retailer pay for it?

1) Add 10 friends to a shared account
2) Each friend pays $6 for a new game
3) Share as needed
????
4) Profit?

I'm not buying this console though. Maybe in a few years.

Doesn't this pretty much take Gamestop and all the mom-and-pop stores out of the equation?
Chains? Probably not. They'll all participate because they all take in healthy revenues from trade-ins. Dunno about independents, whoever is left these days, anyway. Sounds exactly like the networked point of sale system I expected, though.

I have to say I do not understand all the comments in this thread saying "sounds good" or "not too bad" or "not as bad as I thought it would be". There is nothing good about any of that.

LISTEN, PEOPLE, TO THIS!

Also, what if Live servers are down? Your internet doesn't matter a shit if the problem is at MS's end!
