Why would enthusiastic gamers quit gaming over bonehead moves by platform holders?

I've accumulated enough games to last me a lifetime so no, I'm not quitting just because some companies want to go full retard.

They need me more than I need them.

Not going to quit gaming just because MS, EA, SE (and who knows who's next) are pilling up enough crap to build a shitstorm every week.

Good games and good platforms still exist and will always exist and that's only what I'm after as a gamer.

I have a modicum of restraint, I will switch to a more PC & PSV centric approach if Sony does built in DRM (Read: aka bullshit like MS' approach)

Nintendo simply cannot give me high quality graphics and new experiences that come along with them, and PC cannot give me Sony games.

Who said anything about quitting gaming ? Xbone and PS4 do this DRM Crap, I'll stick to non-drm consoles. I'll also collect old games and play those.

Not to hard.

I'm not going to stop playing games I already own. I'm going to stop buying new ones that impose draconian drm structures on me.

This, absolutely this. I've got more than enough games already to probably keep me busy for a couple of years, so if Sony follows MS's lead I'll finish off my backlog from this generation and then maybe consider getting a Wii U to go alongside my Vita.

I'm just going to build a new PC if Sony implements DRM as well. There's no used games or rentals on PC but you still would have more options than you would on a console. I guess going fully PC could backfire if publishers decided not even to make games for it anymore and only support Xbone and PS4.

AMD and NVIDIA must be extremely pleased with the news of the XBone as graphics cards sales will rise.

They're the same people that boycotted MW2 on the pc. They'll either come around to it or play elsewhere, but they aren't quitting.

congratulations on getting fooled by an image that only works on people who don't know how Steam groups work

There are people like me who can go back and play PS2, N64, Mega Drive and even Atari games. I am not worried at all, if Sony joins MS in this thing then ill just stick to older consoles and the Wii U, i am fine.

But there are tons of people who cannot do that, they want the best of the best, the newest, true next gen graphics, they cannot just go back. For them there is just no where to go, gaming essentially stops progressing now this very gen. Perhaps that is why they are saying they are quitting?

We all know MS card's, but many are saying that they would quit gaming altogether if Sony allows publishers to initiate some form of used game DRM--we still don't know that's the case obviously. And I know Nintendo may not be appealing to everyone, but it seems quitting a whole medium seems drastic.

There is still a lot of great gaming available outside of those monolithic platforms, and I fully respect people voting with their wallets in regards to used game DRM. But gaming has survived the coming and going of many platform holders.

I guess I view gaming as any other type of media--books, movies, music. I won't ever stop following those mediums.

Go find that Steam/MW2/Dedicated server boycott picture and your questions will be answered.

People always rationalize their actions. Lets say Maybe just one game on the PS4 won't have DRM, some people will say " seeeeeeeee not all games will have DRM, if we buy the PS4 and support them, other games won't have it either" or people might be super vocal about the Xbone and tell themselves "Well if I buy it, it really won't matter and doesn't mean others will not continue the boycott".

I don't feel like I need console gaming in my life. The idea of losing ownership of my games really grates on me - I don't like the direction it's going and it feels like a sinking ship. I'll be the first to jump off if Sony doesn't show some promise in how they handle this ordeal.

I'm enthusiastic, but also aware of gaming's place in my life - it's a hobby, and like any hobby it can be halted.

Not buying an Xbone does not mean I'll quit gaming. I already own a Wii U and a 3DS, I have a Steam backlog, and I have a bunch of games I have yet to play for my Wii, PS3 and 360. I'll be getting a PS4 if Sony doesn't follow the same route as MS.

But I'm not going to quit gaming.

I'm going Nintendo/PC.

Just changing to more PC centric gaming.

PC, all day, everyday though.

PC PC PC PC PC PC PC
With all the anti-DRM XB1 and depending on what Sony officially announces PS4 DRM will be, the iron is hot for Valve to strike with the Steambox at E3. I'm staying with a full-fledged dedicated PC, but now is a good as time as any to get some real Steambox traction going, if Valve is in fact actually still going in that direction.

Your move, GabeN.

Couple years from now when a few big title games are released everyone will cave and buy consoles and it will slowly become a non issue.

Most kids probably wont even care about this stuff in the first place.. they just want to play COD online 24/7.

There are plenty of other outlets that still respect my rights as a consumer. Not gonna miss out on Halo or whatever else exclusives MS has.

And I already have a beast of a rig so it's nothing if I go PC-Only.

Dude, you're on NeoGAF. This is a place where we talk about video games. If that's trivial to you, leave.

Which they can do on the 360, and you can bet Activision will be releasing COD games for that platform for years to come.

My backlog is enormous anyway, so I could stop buying new stuff now and I'll probably be good for 5 years at my current rate.

3DS, Wii U, PC, and Vita. I have more than enough "next gen" platforms already. Already not buying the Xbox One and if Sony does the same stuff I won't want one either.

I'm gonna wait it out. If the prices of games don't go down to Steam level prices after a year. I may look into PC gaming, and game on Vita/3DS/WiiU.

True gamers will still be playing even if games cost $100........................................

True gamers will wait until those games are on sale for $10~/in a pay what you want bundle and then never actually play them.

GAF might not play games, but we do love buying them at outrageously low prices.

To be frank I couldn't give a flying fuck about the DRM issues, but I am appaled that the Xbob 1 or whatever it's called is not backwards compatible. MS is basically giving me the finger and what shall I do ? Quit gaming ? Are you stupid ? I'm gonna buy me a nice pc and never worry about new generations and shit again.

I'll go New Nintendo with some Old School Sega/SNK/NEC/etc.

Gaming is a part of my life I''l never quit it.

But I have already quit Microsoft. I'll wait to see what Sony says this week.

They wouldn't. They would go elsewhere.

If the Xbone's backend is as restrictive-yet-invasive as it looks to be on paper, you still have a plethora of options to take your gaming dollar.

They won't. I remember when no one was going to buy a PS3 anymore after Sony took away the ability to install Linux, and then they weren't going to buy a PS3 anymore after Sony allowed a breach that may have compromised millions of users Credit card information, and then they weren't going to buy a PS3 anymore after Sony made everyone agree to not take legal action against them as part of their Terms of Service...and then PS3 went on to outsell the 360.

Gamers are all talk.

To be honest, I have a massive backlog on PC, 3DS, Vita, and PS3 to tide me over. I wouldn't quit gaming, but I'd be more than happy to not spend any more money on the hobby for some time.

If big publishers asked for this.. then I seriously doubt this. This year sure cause we are in a transition. They will be pushing next gen consoles next year though.

I have been gaming since 1978, when the Atari 2600 was unveiled under our family's Christmas tree.

I went through the "crash," with Coleco and Atari making boneheaded decisions, and basically letting the market rot.

Renewed my interest as a senior in high school with the NES. I became "console agnostic" with the Genesis. The only mainstream consoles I never bought are the Master System, Turbo Duo and 3DO.

I would say I'm enthusiastic.

But I will not support these practices, either through Xbone or PS4. Part of what makes gaming a great hobby is that I can return to games of old -- I still play my Saturn, N64 and GameCube games quite frequently.

While it's not explicitly said, there is some reason to believe that when the authentication servers are turned off, games will not work on "always online, always connected" systems.

I will not pay $60 or $70 to rent games, even if for a few years.

Few who really like a medium will quit it - on the other hand enough need to have the balls and maturity to stand firm in temptation to force change in the medium when required.

There is a ton of money to made made in videogames. If MS (and Sony too if PS4 is the same) take a huge bloody nose at retail with these consoles they (and the publishers) will backtrack.

Nobody has to quit - but for sure people need to stop rolling over saying "you can't fight city hall" (as it's not true) or whatever other excuse they make because they've got to have the next CoD instead of holding off for a while.

Heck the One (and maybe PS4) don't even need to fail as such - most of this could be changed if MS wanted. But for sure the XBone (as things stand now) needs to show noticeable and series sales issues at retail or we've moved past a tipping point for our rights as consumers.

The money can only be made if we chose to spend it and the industry will accommodate our preferences if they are strongly shown - but right now I gotta say the videogame consumer is in danger of being the king chump vs other mediums and markets.

Even if i didn't buy any next gen console/handheld i still have enough systems and games in my backlog to last me for at least one whole generation.

I won't quit gaming but it would certainly limit which games I'm going to play.
DRM already made PC gaming for me no longer a primary system. With the recent announcement the new Xbox 1 is out of question and if the PS4 will be similar I won't get one either and will miss many games I would otherwise have played. But there are still the PS Vita and GOG, enough for me to continue gaming.

In my experience the people who say they are 'quitting gaming' or other such hyperbole are the people who end up first in line to take a slap in the face from whatever it was they were pissed about.

As an "enthusiast" I'm well aware there's a plethora of options available to me so I can continue enjoying gaming without having to subject myself to anything I think is unsavory.

Some losers in life have nothing else to do besides rail against shit that means nothing in the grand scheme of thing.

On the contrary, anyone that blindly accepts corporate policies that allow them to reap further profits at the expense of their customers and an entire side industry is certainly a fucking loser. While complaining may lead to nothing, at least people speak up when a company does something that can hurt them.

Why do I care about used games? I want to buy new then hock on ebay to reduce my spend on games. This activity supports the USPS, the gaming industry because I can buy more new and, regrettably the monopoly of double dippers that is ebay+paypal. Knowing I can no longer do this on Xbone makes me avoid purchasing it entirely. THe only winners in this are the huge publishers that have already done enough damage to the industry.

this show is not Breaking Bad why is it not Breaking Bad? it should be Breaking Bad dammit Breaking Bad
Because they like to think they have a say in where they invest their monies.
As they should.

There's only so much Microsoft can make Activision do, and if their cash cow is a ton of lagging 360 players, there will nothing said otherwise. Hell look at how Madden still comes out for the PS2. They'll port to whatever sells.
