Think about the big picture guys:

"Owning" the living rooms of America is not just about putting a box servicing their products in every household.

Its about establishing themselves as gate-keeper ahead of all other services, both gaming and entertainment, so that everything is funnelled through their system.

Xbone is pitched as a convergence device, when its actually the perfect choke-point to exert control over all their competitors. Xbone sits ahead of the cable providers boxes, it doesn't filter through them, they pass their product through it. So if they want to mux in system messages or advertising, what's stopping them?

In a broad programming sense they also get to prioritize their offerings in a preferential way over whatever is being fed via the HDMI-in. Given how critical visibility is in these sort of services thats another hefty advantage they get to keep for themselves.

Gaming is just a piece of the pie. This is so much bigger than just that, its actually pretty brilliant in a Machiavellian sort-of-way.

FUCK EA, FUCK UBISOFT, FUCK ACTIVISION.

Period.

Activision didn't push for this, they haven't introduced any DRM stuff this gen. They're probably smart enough to realize that used game trade-ins helps people buy COD titles and they're less worried about their own games being sold/traded-in due to longtail DLC map packs.

Yeah, it's surprising, but Activision seems to be more concerned about their public image than the other big publishers, as of late.

Even on a damn phone if you cancel your subscription/service... at least the games and aps you bought on it still work.

This is the slimiest thing...

I half jokingly said it wouldn't surprise me if Microsoft made Gold mandatory a couple of days ago.

Can't believe it actually might happen.

Hmm, it's actually plausible on further reflection, if they intend to keep pushing this "all our games are running on the power of the cloud" bullshit.

All the games require online.

Online requires a subscription on the Xbox.

All games require a subscription - otherwise they won't run without all that infinite cloud power, even if they're single player.

?

Requiring Gold is the next logical step in Microsoft's playbook.

So basically, you are just renting your games. They are all disposable.

A toll-booth for every road.

A middle-man for every transaction.

And for every ad, another ad.

sure, but havne't they been trying to do this for a decade? Web TV for instance, remember that?

To be fair, most of the negative stuff people hate about Activision is in how they treat their studios. They tend to do as right as possible for the customers themselves.

Do people really believe it will sell no matter what?

They have already started running adverts alongside the biggest franchise in Games, do people actually expect it not to sell?

what a shit post. the red ring thing was an unfortunate production issue. It was sucky, but not some dirty asshole manoeuvre by MS.

True, but their handling of the RRoD was dirty & assholish(they repeatedly tried to claim that there wasn't an issue).

Now I'm going to be nervous during every game reveal hoping to not hear the words "exclusive to XB1". If they get ME2, DR3, and PoP, they got me :(. The last two are in my top 10 IP.

in what instance did gamers prove they don't fall for bullshit?

PS3 - $599 PS3 was almost a dead system but Sony did a great job at re-branding the system. No one fell for Cell or the RSX. Everyone saw Sony as arrogant thinking it will be a huge success regardless the price.

Wii U - How do you go from 100mil to a complete flop? Gamers want a next gen system with next gen games. Nintendo went for the casual crowd and they didn't bite either

Vita- Great system, complete flop. Why? who knows, I assume it's the price and the stupid memory cards. Plus Sony is doing a horrible job at marketing. Where's the games?

and if you want to get old school just look at the 32x, SEGA CD, Jaguar, Saturn, Virtual boy, etc etc

Which, to me, is the most shocking thing of all.

Eh. It has been a while but I don't remember Activision being as bad with the online passes as Ubi and EA. Not that it matters since there is other reasons to hate them but just not that.

I agree with this overall...

My only fear is the Microsham marketing force....they can dump alot more money to make this successful compared to the other guys

It's Joe Public that worries me.

It should not worry you. The public does the right thing a lot especially when it comes to physical ownership. Here is the reaction of the general public about no rentals.

http://www.gametrailers.com/side-mi...orum-page-to-discuss-the-future-of-used-games

http://gamingfuture.net/ This is the site redbox left for comments about no rentals and internet required/24 hour check in. People are pissed about all of this because if affects them a lot.

Burning question for me: If gold *is* required, then what is silver?

Silver is the installer.

It's also for TV. Silver signifies all the grey haired people who actually still watch live TV.

Yet again for every Kinect 1.0 there is W8/WP7/8/Kin/Zune. MS has not been able to buy its way to success in a while.

Too bad, the most important question for me wasn't answered: What's the Rare game? Will I be a broken man this evening (Banjo 3 gets announced) or will I be able to keep my sanity?

Actually there's only how they say they treat their employees.
As far as product goes, they tend to be a bit milky but in the end you always know what you're getting at least, no strings attached.
And considering how Blizzard operate, Diablo 3 would have ended up better if Activision was handling the product...
