PS4 grabs 95% of Consumer Votes after Amazon shuts poll down early

People keep pointing to MS's marketing saving the day, but their marketing and PR has been abysmal so far, and Sony have out-played them at every turn

will be interesting to see how this data translates into sales, but I really doubt it means anything

Pro tip: An image of 19 people in a public steam group playing MW2 was meaningless then, and is still meaningless now.

I bet it's they are close to selling out of all launch edition PS4s and still have plenty of launch edition Xbox Ones left.

I bet they just aren't selling as well. The pull only makes matters worse. You don't need to hype the product more at this rate.

I am voting with my money and preorderd a PS4 last week (eventhrough I really liked how Titanfall looked). I have 2 PS3's and 2 360s and 360 was my primary this generation. I'm trying to get back into my PS3 with The Last of us and but the DS3 controller left analog placement makes gaming painful (especially for first/3rd person shooters). I would be overjoyed if Sony announced a 1st party DS4 controller with the analog/Dpad switched, because my thumb is aching after only 3 hours of play with that DS3 torture device. I'd really like Sony to make one especially since the 3rd party "360like" PS3 controllers are horrible.

Sony should not change the core design of their controller just for the migration of Xbox gamers. DS3 is still better than the 360 controller other than how it feels to hold.

DS4 is the proper evolution for the controller. Now i think its perfected due to better handles and triggers. Analogs too.

Several previews have said the sticks are spaced wider now so that may help you out.

Sony don't need to change anything. It's Dualshock design. If you don't like it, buy 3rd party controller.

only 40,000 of the 150+ million console owners voted on this poll. It too is damn useless and doesn't mean shit.

I don't think any polls in the history of polls have dealt with more than a relatively small sample of votes. As stated before, it's the source that matters, how you go about securing those votes. If the majority of votes were sent by hardcore gamers, then it's not as relevant. Amazon is a general consumer company, so odds are that there are a lot of casual votes in that poll there as well. The extreme difference implies that, assuming half of the votes were done by different people, then as it stands, Sony will do better than Microsoft.

here's one from may '06 http://vgstrategies.about.com/od/videogamesurveyspolls/a/nextgenconsoles.htm

edit: my bad, i forgot to double check launch dates- the 360 had been out for half a year at this point
and the Wii & PS3 were still 6 months out.

ZYOPGGa.png

VG is a much more gaming centric site than Amazon. At least there might be a lot of casual votes from Amazon. But people were obviously more inclined to vote for the product that is available and has a lineup of games than a product that was still far off -- The Xbox would have had lots of marketing and exposure at that point compared to the PS3.

If you were going to announce which console you'd like to purchase, would you choose a product that exists and is tangible, or a console that only exists as an idea, a concept?

The PS controller is pretty bad. It's so very small, so it's not possible to comfortably grasp in your hands. The layout also makes racing games extremely uncomfortable to play.

Now look at the PS3 now. Beating the 360 in worldwide sales.

Only reason that happened is because MS abandoned its core audience to focus on trashy Kinect games while Sony really stepped up it's game and fixed the problems they had at launch with the price. The PS3 got totally destroyed in it's early years and the poll reflects that. Sony would not abandon the PS4 like Microsoft did. They are a company much more committed to gaming and have always been.

It quite eloquently shows that of pc gamers that are very into Call of Duty, only slightly more than half played modern warfare 2.

The people on that boycott list are all fans, otherwise they wouldn't have bothered joining.
Under normal circumstances that list would be all COD.

(for the record; I know very well the background of that picture and what it really is meant to signal.)

I also know about what that picture entails, it's just bullshit posting that here.

The PS4 version of CoD Ghosts is ahead of Xbone version in Amazon preorders, in USA. That alone should tell you everything you need to know.

It doesn't even show that.

First, there are seventeen pages of members in the Steam group. That only shows the first.

Second, and most importantly, Steam group listings sort by who's online and playing, so everyone in the group that was playing MW2 on launch day would always have floated to the top, no matter how few of them there were.

It's only just overtaken it after what, 7 years? And that was coming off the back of PS2.

The only problem with that poll was Wii which had a massive unseen mainstream super casual market which blew both MS and Sony away.

Oh nonononono this isn't a controller preference thread, it's a 95% -5% voting thread.

(I had some harsh words for MS when their DRM scheme was revealed, but now am starting to almost feel sorry for them. How low can you go?)

Carry on.

Is there a version of this picture showing the right half of the controller?

This picture is incredibly stupid. If you are unable to offset your thumb by an inch, then you have serious orthopedic and biomechanical issues. Also, the right stick is 'low'.

-Relax your muscles in your hands.
-Now put your hands in front of you, just like you'd hold a controller, but don't flex any muscles.
-Notice where your thumbs are.

Right symmetrical, next to each other - just like the DS does it.

The asymmetrical position is not natural. You forcefully have to alter your left thumb's position.

It's familiarity. I'm fine with anyone saying they're used to this layout and thus it's more comfortable to them at this point. But arguing that asymmetry was somehow generally better ergonomics is irrational.

When you play a shooter, or any third-person game with free camera, you will have both thumbs on an analog stick a majority of the time. Whenever you're arguing that "up" is the more natural position to the extent that "down" makes you uncomfortable, then all you have to do to prove yourself wrong is looking down at your hands and see the position of your right thumb.

I still think that Xbone isn't nearly as screwed as the Internet is making it out to be. I'm still looking forward to PS4 more though.

You guys keep putting WAY too much stock in these online polls. These polls are being filled out by the same people who vote EA as the worst company in America. EA for crying out loud. Worst gaming company? Sure. In America? ....

If the internet was right about things Snakes on a Plane would have been the number one movie of all time.

Xbox One will be fine, there also may be tears from GAF.

The posture will be weird at first for the PS4 controller, but we will eventually adjust to it. Our right hand is positioned like that.

Both Amazon and MS are in the greater Seattle area. People move from one company to the other quite often. Someone from MS probably called up their buddies and made them stop the poll.

It's pretty disgusting but... my hands when completely relaxed rest on the design of Xbox 360's controller and this is only because that's what I've been playing on for the last 12 years (Xbox OG).

Ironically, I just had this conversation with my dad over the weekend and asked him to relax his hand to see where his thumbs went. Naturally they aligned with what you are saying, the dualshock is where your thumbs naturally go.

Big thanks to Sony for correcting my natural hand position in the future. :)

Yeah. Extremely hard to take your opinion seriously when you preface it with a console warrior type picture.

I'm not a big fan of the dualshock stick placement but I'm even less of a fan of how loose they feel; makes shooters particularly awkward. I also cramp up after a few hours of dualshock play which is especially irritating when I'm enjoying TLOU so much.

Been watching a lot of different channel on twitch and seems like broadcasters and people in the chat are mostly trashing xbox one. Even the dudebro COD guys.

The controller is the main draw of the XBO for me. The DS has always been too small for my hands and felt very awkward to hold.

Not enough of a draw for me to want to buy an XBO mind you, but it's something I'm pretty bummed to be missing out on. I'm hoping for some good 3rd party controllers.

I mean this is an debate that has lasted for 2 console generations and it comes down to preference. I've been playing games all of my life and I hate the PS controller analog positions. Playing first or 3rd person shooters the left analog stick is spending 90% of its time in the "up" position. On the DS you have to hold your thumb in an unnatural thumb side gripping and pulling toward the middle of your index finger which cramps my hand pretty bad after about an hour. Whereas the 360 controller all you have to do is flick your thumb up. I'm sorry but for my preference the 360 controller is worlds better than the DS and unfortunately I have 2 3rd party PS3 "360like" controllers and they are complete garbage.

Isn't it possible to somehow use Xbox controller for PlayStation? Like through some kind of adapter or something? I absolutely hate the PlayStation controller but if I do end up getting a console next gen it will be the PS4 but I really don't want to use the controller.
