Sony vs Microsoft: The First Party Studios

Any blind faith anyone has in Rare at this point is misplaced. It is a husk of its former self and hasn't worked on anything but Kinect Sports and Avatars for a very long time.

MS blew their load this E3. The only studio I can think of who still might have a surprise in store is Lionhead, who's record hasn't exactly been stellar recently.

Rare was said to have 3 titles in dev, and only revealed one. Black Tusk studios also had a rumored 3 in dev and only showed a teaser for one game, so that is still very unknown (load still not blown :p). Lionhead, yep, agreed. MS Victoria supposedly have a core title, as well as MS Osaka having a rumored 2 core titles in development. Also, Crackdown was seen on a tile during the console reveal, so expect that at some point.

So yes, I agree, Sony has a lot more room to show more games, but MS still should have some tricks up its sleeve. It will be an exciting next year, that's for sure.

Anyone feel free to help me update the OP, I've done what I could after E3

Rare - Kinect Sports: Rivals
Rare team 2 - Killer Instince with Double Helix
Rare team 3 - ?

No idea what Soho, Platform next, Connect Experiences, Lifestyle, Skybox Sports, Playful Learning, XBL Productions, MS Mobile and Life London will be working on.

Also Frontier are working on MS owned Zoo Tycoon.

You should probably change "Third Party Contracted" to second party. There's a difference between Remedy and Insomniac working with Microsoft and Titan Fall just being an EA published game that's only on Xbox platforms.

There is no such thing as second party. Quantic Dreams, Remedy, inSomniac and etc are all 3rd party, they can always make their next game for a different platform.

Nope, that's actually the definition of a second party. Second party are games by independent developers published by platform holder. First party is the platform holder's own studios and third party are any games not published by the platform holder.

Its the reason even if ms won id still own a playstation, you get games you wouldnt get on xbox. They always take risks on games, i couldnt see heavy rain and the like being made with ms money. Sony always fund games even if they dont sell a fuckton, ms would drop those without a second thought.

Ms is funding Quantum Break, Crismon Dragon and D4, they all seem pretty risky.

Though i agree Sony seems to have a few more tries before dropping a new IP altogether, while Ms usually does so after the first entry that bombs.

Alan Wake didn't sell a fuckton and it hasn't been dropped.

Extrapolating the head counts inside the teams.

Rare team 2
Lionhead team 1
Lionhearted team 2
343

Don't expect anything out of MS Osaka, lift London and some of the other smaller studios for a while.

We might see something out of them soon actually. Matrick name dropped both Black Tusk and MS Osaka in a post conference (XB1 Unveiling) interview with Geoff, and said that it was proof that Microsoft was still invested within Japan.

I doubt Rare has devoted an entire team to KI. Double Helix said there aren't very many people who worked on the original series still left, but Rare is reviewing builds and sending feedback. I don't believe that would require very much in the way of dev resources.

MS Osaka's game will not hit until 2015 at the earliest. We might have a CG trailer at most of out TGS.

I think MS Osaka is a studio that was acquired recently. Just a hunch.

Why would Matrick single them out alongside Black Tusk, whose game they just announced? Microsoft Victoria is also one of Microsoft's new AAA studios, and yet, they went completely unmentioned.

Microsoft had many chances to pick up game studios but they let them slip away. It's only a good thing now imo now that they pulled this online shit.

Okay I have edited the list with a few of the above suggestions. Note I didn't add many Indie games, and Free to Play games that are only announced for PS4 so far, mainly because none of those games are published by Sony (also many of those games are on PC or have a chance of coming to other platforms). If anyone knows any Indie games published by Sony or MS please let me know.

What studios? Pretty much every studio that Microsoft has let slip away have either A) Went belly up or B) Done relatively mediocre. Bizarre went on to make so-so games that nobody wanted. Bioware is a shell of its former self. Realtime Worlds went on to bankrupt itself with APB. Bungie wanted out, so it was either supress them and bleed talent, or let them part. Who else is there? Artoon and feelpluss?

Mistwalker is probably the only 2nd party studio that they should have purchased, but I can't really blame them considering the Xbox platform doesn't exactly have the most die hard RPG fans within it. Ensemble hurt as well, but they didn't really fit Microsoft's plans

They should definitely make a go at Remedy and Undead Labs though. Maybe Playground Games as well (Forza Horizon). Ruffian Games to recoup what it lost with Realtime Worlds?

Black Tusk had 55 people as of December 2012. They've essentially just begun making 1 AAA game.

Is Doki Doki, not published by Sony?

Nah, but Hohokum is.

My personal rankings of the MS first party studios.

Teams with multiple AAA teams:
343, Rare, Lionhead

Teams large enough to for one AAA title:
Turn 10, Black Tusk

Teams for AA or XBLA titles:
Leap, Victoria, Good Science, Twisted Pixel, MS Dakota, etc.

343 I think is a HUGE team. Pretty sure they had 343 employees as of March 2013, which is more than Rare and Lionhead.

Well, MS definitely has significantly stronger studios than Sony does. Sucker Punch aside, I don't see anyone who's developed a game that's been as good as something from Remedy, Capy, or Capcom Vancouver.

I'm thinking most of those games (Don't Starve, Mercenary Kings, Ray's The Dead especially) in Sony's indie list are also on the PC.

Yep a lot of those Indie games are also on PC, I have yet to update some of the list, will do that some other time as I am on my phone now. As for who has better first party, I gotta give it to Sony. Out of MS big Studios I like 343 and Remedy. Where as with Sony we like many Studios and a lot of the good ones have 2 teams.

I feel really uninspired by both lists. I also want to see more new IP's from both first parties that excite me. I'm just not feeling it yet with what has been announced and I'm pretty darn burned out on the old franchises from both sides. I'm done with most of them. I'm not sure they can squeeze another purchase out of me with most of those franchises even with next gen hardware. I'm done with those settings.

Santa Monica, Guerilla Games, MediaMolecule are all confirmed to be making new IP.

I saw that. I hope it all turns out to be stuff that I will buy. I'm on a mission this gen to break away from alot of the stuff that has tired me this gen and some of that has to do with old franchises that have worn thin on me.

Perhaps The Order, Sunset Overdrive or Quantum Break may appeal to you, though there isn't much info on those games. So MS have D4 and Crimson Dragon. Sony have a ton of indie stuff too.

What? Lol. So after making Uncharted 2 and the Last of Us which are in the running for game of the generation , you are telling me Naughty Dog is not as good as those MS studio?

I've seen all of that. I need to see more later of that stuff. Like I say, I haven't seen enough to get me aroused just yet. I'm hoping the Order is really freaking over the top with some really busy action on screen. I think the setting lends itself to a style where you get some quiet exploration building up to an explosion of action coming from all directions.

Sunset Overdrive looks alright but I haven't seen any gameplay yet. It may be one that gamers wish wasn't exclusive to one console. I do like the use of color though and I hope more companies move away from the ultra dark look like they have. The JSRF gamer in me liked the visuals alot. Destiny really had it right color wise too.

I personally thought their was a lot of new IP, many if you include multiplatform games too, all the ones I mentioned and Knack, Destiny, TitanFall, The Division, Project SPARK, Mad Max and etc
