Microsoft investing $700 million in data centre to support cloud service & Xbox Live

If even you can't get interested in their products, they must be doing something really wrong.

Yeah, paid online.

Though I will admit that I am very excited for the new Kinect. I hope PC versions of multiplats keep the X1 Kinect features (assuming there's a PC version of Kinect).

An important point is that Microsoft's investments in its cloud infrastructure are not specifically game-related. They are generally investing in Azure. Demand for cloud infrastructures is growing like crazy, and the range of applications goes beyond gaming-related services.

As long as they are not building data centers with servers that have high-performance GPUs in them, their data centers are general purpose oriented and based on commodity servers.

You can always sell those resources, irrespectible of the amount that XBL will use. And the great thing about cloud infrastructures is the decoupeling between physical resources and the services running on them. There is just no need to "reserve 300.000" servers anymore. You just allocate the amount of resources that you need on this day dynamically. And if you don't allocate it, it will be sold so somebody else.

So, in conclusion, Microsofts huge investments are not a specific investment in XBox, but part of the general growth of cloud computing.

The point is you can be negative nancy and spin this as bad thing, but at the end of the day this is good news.

Or I could simply be backing someone pointing out that the original Cloud PR as sold was misleading, and not make any comment whatsoever about this being a bad thing. Which is what I did.

Up until the X1 fiasco, I was really impressed with Neogaf. The community is absolutely huge but I found the lack of trolls and bias fanboy posts very welcome. Of course there were trolls and obvious fanboys but for the size of the community, I thought they were very low in comparison with other boards.

Now, it seems like the majority of topics/posts are extremely ignorant and trollish towards the x1 and Microsoft. It seems like the new unmentioned rule of Neogaf is that users must come up with the most creative way to spout negative comments about Microsoft/X1, truth and facts not necessary.

I was able to tolerate the semi-often Nintendo is doomed, Nintendo should go third party and Nintendo games are always the same posts, but Neogaf now seems like a breeding ground of negativity towards anyone but Sony and I'm not quite sure it's worth it to keep visiting the boards.

I visit Neogaf for the wonderful insightful commentary of video games, the gaming industry and the great discussion around current and upcoming games. Lately, those qualities which Neogaf has set itself apart with have become overtaken by ignorant negativity.

I understand people have different view points and I understand everyone doesn't agree with each other but the constant negativity, snark and ignorance geared toward Nintendo and Microsoft serves only to detract from meaningful conversation. If any of the major three companies invest $700k in their online infrastructure, it's a good thing. Period. Yet, the replies to this post are are still so unbelievably founded in Sony fanboyism it's intolerable.

So with that, I say goodnight sweet prince. You are no longer the Gaf I used to know and love.

This! SO much this! I joined this forum some months ago because of the reputation this place got for great, relatively unbiased gaming conversation and inside information, but in the past month or so its been embarrassing to read all the blind negativity towards Microsoft. ANY amount of positive news regarding the Xbox or Microsoft as a whole turns into a negative troll fest. It's getting unbearable to read any topic past the initial post relaying the positive information.

I don't mind well thought out posts that bring up valid questions about the topic, but lately it's just turned into relentless "fanboy" (hate using that word) drivel based on blind hatred for a company that was GOING to implement unfavorable policies, REVERSED it five months before release, and STILL is getting flack for it. People need to seriously move on. I'm not saying anyone should forget what companies like Microsoft try to accomplish that may come off as anti-consumer, what I'm saying is that until they actually IMPLEMENT these standards, we should keep an open mind and not revert to blind hate-mongering.

All the console warriors come out of the wood work at this time in the life cycle, they really believe that arguing the toss on message boards will somehow influence how the generation pans out. Its why they get so obviously upset when someone dares to say they'll buy an Xbox. Last time it took a couple of years post launch before they calmed down.

That's funny, I saw that James Sawyer Ford dude desperately trying to get this guy to stick with PS4 when he was contemplating an Xbox One.

Anyway, the more I hear about cloud the more I refuse to believe it's all bs and nothingness like people here make out. MS wouldn't invest $700mill for no reason.

Agreed

Sony really pissed me off with their paid online bullshit, but if they backtracked on it, you wouldn't see me respond with "but they spat in my FAAAAAAACE!!!"

Sony still allows some online games to be played without PS+
Like PlanetSide 2 and DC universe along with all F2P games.

That should be pretty nice right?

So who where you replying too? No one here was making the claim that the cloud offered a magical graphic boost.

You guys are downplaying how awesome dedicated servers are.

^This guy probably put it the best.^

The issue was MS originally saying ZOMG TEH POWAR OF TEH CLOUD BETTAR GRAFIX BETTER AI

Realistically, there's very little a cloud service can do to augment a game beyond the stuff we already have this gen. The examples we've actually been given of Teh Powar Of Teh Cloud™ have proven that:

For Titanfall they have said that Teh Cloud™ allows them to have NPC AI characters actually calculated server-side and implemented in game seamlessly. Translation: Since the game is running on dedicated servers, congratulations, they've implemented a server running bots. We've had that since... what, QuakeBot?

For Forza 5 they have shown that the game uses Teh Cloud™ to remember exactly how you drive; how aggressively you pass, take corners, how you hit your apexes, etc. Then your friends can race against the cloud-based AI drivatar even when you're not online, and your drivatar can win races for you! Translation: Your locally created drivatar is uploaded to the server where your friends download and race it, with their console doing all the AI calculations based on the parameters of your drivatar. At least, we *hope* that's what it means, otherwise they will be (hilariously) streaming a multiplayer AI car with all the lag that entails, when it can easily be done client side.

This is not exactly the groundbreaking cloud nonsense the PR mouthpieces were talking about, because that stuff isn't really feasible.
Dragon's Dogma uses Teh Clowd for the pawn system. It uploads your pawn to the Capcom server with its equipment, AI inclinations, and quest and monster knowledge for other players to recruit.

Dragon's Dogma already flies into the free with the powah of teh clowd!

it's the same sentiment across the internet now and GAF isn't immune. people need to realize this was a bad move by MS and it won't go away quickly. Does anyone remember the shit Sony took over the PSN outage or $599? those problems had repercussions for months to years.

It's not that difficult to understand, I quoted and even put little arrow marks pointing up at his post and expounded upon his point. Not every reply needs to be an argument, dude. Ease up and find someone actually spinning this news (which there are plenty of examples of in this thread) to throw your accusations on.

lol I love posts like these. "OMG Leave MS alone guys!" Case in point: MS did this to themselves. Until MS gets their heads out of their asses, we will continue to discuss what they are doing wrong.

Except those things actually happened.

Yes but that shit actually happened and also affected its consumers and the games they bought, rendering some features absolutely useless while this happened in theory and then was changed with a whole 6 months left before the console actually released. No one is affected anymore, other than peoples feelings.

How is investing $700 million in their cloud infrastructure wrong?

Just look at this thread or every other thread that mentions the cloud, the same shit every time. I'm exited there's finally a fucking push for quality dedi's for consoles and we can't even properly discuss that anymore.

MS invests on better multiplaying and online experiences--people complain.

OK.

replace microsoft with Sony and you would have a whole different set of responses in here. since the may reveal, every MS thread is just full of troll posts from start to finish. even after they gave gamers what they wanted, all people say now is "too little too late M$", kinect spying on you and making fun of cloud services.

My question just a few posts before. How this is being spun into a negative is psychotic.

If people leave that never had any interest in the Xbox One things would settle down.

Microsoft is banking heavily into the cloud and it's also to do with Windows and things like Office, not just Xbox Live.

"But they spit in my face so I'm going to troll every positive Xbox One thread." Ridiculous what this has turned into here.

I don't plan on getting the Xbox One, but this is getting ridiculous. Every single time MS has revealed new news half the people on here, most who probably didn't plan on getting the new xbox even before the reveal, search for some sort of way to twist the news. Heck, this is almost as bad as when we found out that they were investing $1b in games.

Some people are "forgetting" Sony have patented their own DRM system for games, lets all throw our dolly's out the pram and boycott them for ever more!

After what happened with all the PSN passwords getting hacked in the current gen, surely thats a far bigger reason for a boycott?

1 billion in games? Its not a TV box anymore??? God damn you Microsoft.

Sony patented DRM 2 generations ago. Patents mean nothing.

ALso, nothing happened from the PSN "hack".

Screw you guys, I live 25 minutes away from there. More tech in Des Moines is awesome.

Also, lol at those trying to paint this as a negative from either side.

Excited to see what really comes from all of the investment in their infrastructure. Hopefully it's a noticeable amount of features/services that are superior to what Sony offers.

You know what, theres even a possibility now of seeing games like Halo5 allowing the renting of detis for custom games. Imagine being able to rent a server and being able to put whatever gametype you want and publish it on Live. Just like PC. Thats huge imo.

Probably not going to happen. SCE already has a cloud provider.

Actually because Microsoft provides the Azure platform as a service that is sold on the open market. Its really only up to Sony if they want to buy it. Microsoft would not be able to refuse them as a customer and would have to provide them with a fair contract inline with anyone else that would use the service. Now I am sure Sony would want to use one of the other platform providers not only to save face but also because the other platform are more proven to be stable with large amounts of users.

Of course something happened, the service was down for a long time while PSN customers such as myself wondered if our private information was leaked. Some games that came out during that time got hammered hard because people couldn't play them or buy them. This was the fear of the Xbox One and it's original plans since it was going to need to be connected just to play. The PSN hack was a huge wake-up call for the industry to batten down the hatches and improve security. Moving forward Sony will have to do a better job at making sure there isn't any downtime and scheduled maintenance as often as now. The whole process of system updates needs to improve too.

As we move to the cloud gamers will have quicker access to their games online with automated updates and easier access. I'm a Playstation + customer and it's nivce having my games updated automatically.

I'm reading Gaf since 2004 and the state its in now is beyond me. I dont recall it ever being like this.

This thread is a microcosm for the way this forum has went, sadly.

Boo fucking hoo. All you guys now taking a dump on Neogaf as a scapegoat for one of the biggest shit-on-the-consumer attempts from none other than Microsoft itself. It would be a different story if they hadn't done any of that DRM shit, but if you take a look at anywhere else on the internet you'd see the overwhelming sentiment.

My only issue is that Microsoft seems to concerned with paying providers for exclusive features that they can put behind the gold paywall. Instead of creating content for the mass market to use.

I don't doubt that, this however has nothing to do with DRM and it still being shit on.

Patents mean nothing LOL!

They only created a new one in January

If you think Sony weren't looking at going down the same route you are completely naive, they only decided against it when they saw the opportunity to stick one to MS when they saw the flack they were getting.
