Retronauts Podcast Thread

Hi everyone, Jeremy here. You’ve probably seen my announcement at USgamer, but in case you find it all tl;dr for your liking, here’s the brief: I’m stepping down as editor-in-chief of USgamer and will be focusing on… well, a variety of different things, actually. But for starters, I’d like to try and turn Retronauts into a true and proper venture.

Retronauts was never meant to be just a podcast. As I mentioned in our recent 10th anniversary episode, the podcast was really just a lark; I was already writing a series called Retronauts for my personal blog and simply borrowed the name for a 1UP.com audio show I expected to flop immediately and die in ignominy. Obviously that didn’t happen, thanks to the support of both listeners (thank you!) and contributors alike, and we’re still going strong a decade later. Still, I always wanted Retronauts to be a full website with a wide variety of written and video material to supplement the audio content. I’ve broached the idea with management at every company I’ve worked under over the past 10 years, but it never quite made sense to them; everyone has always said game history is too niche a topic to be a self-sustaining venture within a corporate/network setting.

I’m grateful that Gamer Network continued letting me and Bob run Retronauts on the side and even let us post the show to USgamer each week, but it’s still been stuck as a weekends-only side project. And I get it. Maybe Retronauts wouldn’t work as part of a publishing network portfolio. But just possibly, I feel, it can work for some people working on their own. Let’s find out.

Beginning in the new year, I hope to see what happens when I make Retronauts my primary day-to-day concern. Our listeners (that’s you) have been incredibly generous for the past few years, supporting us through Patreon to make it possible for us to produce a professional-quality podcast in our free time. Now, I’d like to push for enough funding to make Retronauts a sustainable full-time venture — to go full-pro. I’m proud of what we do by simply moonlighting, but imagine how much more we could do if this were to become a daily concern. I don’t know if that’s actually possible, if enough people want us to explore video game history to enable us to make a proper go of it, but I’m wagering my livelihood that it can.

Woo hoo!

Super excited to give it a listen. If it is as entertaining as the olden days I may need to bump something off my "always listen" podcast rotation.

I have every episode since the beginning I'm my iTunes. can't wait.To listen.

bring back sharkey

I was really hoping that sharkey was going to be a stretch goal. I miss hearing his voice so much, his talent is being wasted at the moment. I think he is bar tending, if I am not mistaken :( (He seems to honestly enjoy it, but I wish there was a writing job out there for him right now)

Oh nice, gonna listen now with breakfast. What a coincidence that a few days ago I started re-listening to my 6.5 days worth of old Retronauts podcasts. I guess I was hyping myself up for their return and I didn't even know it. Yay Retronauts!

Just finished listening. It was as good as I could possibly ask for a topic that I have no real interest in. Also I thought Chris Kohler was going to be a regular? Hilarious background music btw.

I sure hope so, they probably can't get everyone in the golden year back like Shane, but Chris Kohler better damn well be in it.

NICE. I still haven't submitted an episode idea for my pledge. Maybe it's too late for that now? I didn't realize this was happening so soon. Just gave my money and hoped for the best :p

If it's not too late to give my episode idea maybe someone can give me an idea of what they'd like to hear?

I swear I was listening to a Good Job Brain podcast and someone congratulated Chris for the Retronauts kickstarter hitting its goal. I don't know why they would have done it if he weren't involved. He's my favorite person to listen to because of his ridiculous amount of knowledge on games.

I'd like to hear about their experiences with shooting games (shoot em ups) from their earliest experiences and favorites, to where they think the genre might go with the next generation here.

This just came to mind, but I really hope a BBS door games episode is going to come up eventually. It was the big hole in the original Retronauts (well, among others of course), so I hope they can cover them. You guys could bring on one of the Giantbomb guys, since they admitted to running BBSes back in the day. lol

Where are they recording? near a dojo? All that shouting in the back is distracting...

Awesome news BTW, really enjoying it aside of that.

What's going on with the recording? Sounds like they're doing it inside a gym classroom that's still in session.

Ha, yeah exactly.

They mentioned in the beginning that they happened to be recording at the same time as a vocal yoga class.

You should have heard from us ages ago to solicit your topic. Did you never receive that email? It's certainly not too late -- we've only nailed down the timing on one contributor episode so far -- but you should contact us through your KS account ASAP.

As for the yoga thing... we're renting a shared office/workspace. As it turns out, we discovered too late, people have random classes there on weekends from time to time. It was yoga that weekend, and there's a ukelele course in a couple of weeks. Thankfully all these events are listed on their website, so we can schedule around them in the future. Of all the things that could have gone wrong with a first episode in a new setup with new equipment, that's probably the most trivial (and amusing) imaginable. Everything else went off without a hitch.
