Man! This game is awesome! I got out of it for a while and just picked it back up. The pure insanity of what is going on, yet all of it being played off as being normal in this world is just awesome! I kind of do hope for a Arietty game if they ever want to turn a Gihbli movie into a game.

i just started playing this game and im about 2 hours in. started off slow as expected but two things immediately stand out to me:

1) this game is just oozing with polish. i dont think ive seen prettier menus in any other game ever. its so exquisitely detailed. the artwork is great and theres lots of neat little effects and charming animations found all over the game. its incredible how much work went into the art and design of this game but i guess thats to be expected if studio ghibli is involved.

2) the english dub is terrible. i dont remember but is there a way to switch to the japanese dub without restarting my game?

overall im liking NoK a lot and cant wait to dive in more.

Evolved1

make sure the pudding isn't too soggy but that just ruins everything
I want to buy this on PSN, but I feel like the price is still too much...

So we have no idea is this game was "successful" in the West, or not?

The developer? said they would look at a sequel if it did really well.

Hopefully we get one and they can work on the combat.

I believe they had a fairly spectacular run on the CE, but it's not clear how well it sold to the general public; the demo was pretty terrible.

Amongst developers it was also very well received but that also doesn't really speak well to sales...

I'm a little late to the party. I just stumbled upon this gem two days ago. I was looking for a game to buy and saw it on the shelf. I didn't know anything about it so I was on the fence Then when I saw the Level 5 logo on the box, I snatched it up without hesitation. It's exactly the type of game I was looking for. Level 5 is the new "Squaresoft".

Yeah the art, graphics and atmosphere of this game are second to none. It's unbelievably good.

I did not finish it yet (55hrs in) - I am past the "last" boss, before the next "last" boss but I have some minor gripes:

- 95% of the side quests are Give & Take Heart. What a wasted opportunity. Quests like "Stolen Cat Whiskers" or "Level this Familiar up to LVL 40" are very rare.
- "Tactics" command is pretty useless. What they should have is an option stating: "Use only the following Abilities -->" and a submenu where you could mark the current Familiar's Abilities to be used.
- Perdida and Yule do not feature exclusive music :( What in the fuck?
- the dungeons are a joke... the only one dungeon that only resembles a random dungeon from DQ8 is the Glittering Grotto. The rest are worthless - very short and very easy.

On the plus side:

+ production values. The game OOZES with them.
+ Wizard's Companion (absolutely amazing and a blast to read)
+ Al-Khemi! (Alchemy, get it?)
+ Merit Card Awards system
+ Hunts (but they are kinda repeatable in the end)
+ story and characters. Lord High Lord of the Fairies is one of the best supporting characters in jRPGs history.
+ ultra-fast loading
+ flying around on Tengri
+ best overworld since FF8
+ ultra-fast battles, almost as fast as FF13 ones

Game is still a 10/10 for me. My dream anime jRPG.

It debuted at #1 in the UK and some other European countries and was out of stock everywhere for a while. I'd say it exceeded their expectations.

Third hand info is that it bombed in Japan pretty horribly while selling ok in the US. Probably easy to fact check looking at Media Create history data.

Dragon Quest 8.

It's like NNK only better in every way possible.

i just finished the fairygrounds part. i loved the busy-ness of the village and how absolutely hilarious the fairies were.

when the littlies were all screaming "KNICKERS!!!! KNICKERSSS!!!!!" i lost it. really loving this game. so damn charming

Beaten this game today @ 3:00 AM. Party was at LVL 71, last boss fight was fucking INTENSE (I messed up and missed the Defend button TWO times during the Chaos attack).

I am doing post-game now and loving it except the palette swap bosses in all the old dungeons.

125 Creatures Tamed so far... gonna 1000 this pretty much perfect jRPG soon.

Yeah this was my favourite written town as well. So hilarious. Surly & Burly are goddamn killing me.

Got the Al.-Khemi! achievement this night... it wasn't very hard to obtain - in fact it was harder to get the rare items from normal enemies than it was to get the Kaleidostones/ Scrolls of Truth from the golden ones.

Now the next one (250 familiars) will be a real fucking pain in the ass.

I beat this game back in March and haven't touched it since, but I've been thinking about it lately. Thinking of going back. There's still plenty to do.

I don't play let alone finish many games these days, but this one really stands out.

I noticed the soundtrack is available on both iTunes and Amazon now. It's $17.98 on Amazon. Sitting here with my finger on the "buy" button...

Just got the game and I am absolutely stunned. This is without a doubt one of the best looking games I have ever seen. The art direction is outstanding. So far this looks like it could turn out to be one the best jrpgs I have played in a very long time.

hey guys,

i think im near the end. i just finished making the
clarion and have access to the miasma marshes. my characters are around level 40s or so and im getting my ass kicked by the monsters in the area.

how much do i have left of this game? should i take time to do sidequests and grind my characters now? is this pretty much the end of the game? also, some of my monsters are at level 40 and i havent metamorphed them yet..should i even bother at this point? it takes so damn long to level them. i guess i didnt plan them out early on but its so frustrating when they go back to level 1.

also, whats a good spot to level?

Can somebody help here. I am post game, only missing the alchemy trophy. One of the items I need for alchemy is only obtainable from a boss
khulan's
nightmare. I put the game down for 4 months and have just decided to finish this freaking trophy and get the platinum. How do you fight bosses again post game? I can't remember.

THANK YOU FELLOW KUNIERS

I think you are at around 70/80% of the game.

You should Metamorph them and level them for sure. I ran into the some problems a bit after where you are now because they were level capped and stuff would kick my ass really hard. You should grind TokoToko creatures which give you 8k exp per kill. I can't provide you with a link at the moment but info should be easy to find. They first pop up exactly where you are now so you should be able to farm those.

At that point of the game I wanted it to be over and just wasted 2 hours of my time farming them and got to level 80 or something and went through everything without many problems.

I'm 40 hours in and thought I was at the end of the game. Looks like I got 15-20 hours more to go.

This game is fucking incredible. An RPG this long and this enjoyable should be illegal.

Thank you based Level 5

Just put it in my PS3 as well - can't believe how I could resist the temptation since February. So many great games this year I guess.

Im only like 1-2 hours in but I'm considering doing a marathon - I have never done that with a game. The atmosphere is sucking me and so I'm now considering plaything it with the HMZ-T1.

Did any of you guys do a marathon? I'm thinking 24-48 hours of Ni no Kuni.

And any beginner tips besides which Familiars to get?

Get the Little Bighorn, Tin Man and Skeleton familiars as soon as you can.
Hold on to your Thumbelemur as he is a good familiar paired with your other 2 familiars.

But I'm only 3-4 hours in. Is it normal I can't catch monsters yet? I need a spell for that?

Yeah, you won't be able to catch your own familiars until you receive your second party member. She joins you after you've finished Ding Dong Dell and gone on to the next part of the world.

Okey dokey.

I'm in that stupid Ding Dong Well to look for the King but I'm running out of MP and I need it to turn on the fire. Isn't there a way to get MP besides battles? Can't seem to find anything at the weapons shop in Ding Dong.

Iced Coffee will restore your MP-it's not sold at Weapons Stores-it's at the Item Stores.

Ugh I only have 307G and one Iced Coffee costs 200G. Such an expensive town. :(

This is gonna be one tough adventure I can feel.

I have planned a 9 hour marathon today, tomorrow and Friday for this game.

you can replenish MP at the town's save point but that may be a long walk from the dungeon. It's good though for leveling up your monsters if you dont mind a bit of grinding.

You can replenish it for free at the save point at the dungeon entrance, or for 10g at the town's inn.

Thanks guys. Some probably dumb questions but here goes:

- How do I know which foods my Familiars like? I go to the Wizard's Companion and go to look up Mitey and the other monkey creature I got but I can find their strengths and evolutions, but not their favorite foods?

- How do combat basically work? I just found out that I shouldn't just button-mash and that it can be to my advantage moving around dodging projectiles and attacks. I also collect the yellow, green and blue orbs for HP, special move and MP. But when I get "Nice" attacks, is that when I counter their attack with my own attack? I can't for the life of me defend with Lemahl and thus looses a lot of health whenever I use him.

- I see all of my chosen monsters and Oliver himself gets XP even though I didn't use particular characters in combat, but more XP is allocated to the ones I used in battle correct?

- Are there a lot of grinding throughout the game or a lot of passages with tons of monsters to fight? I have never been such a fan of these type of encounters but it helps that I can at least see the monsters like in Final Fantasy XII. And how come, some of the monsters run away from me? Is that because I'm too strong (high level) compared to them? Also, how can I see what level the monsters I fight are at?

^I also just started this game a day or so ago, but here are some answers IMO to your questions. Keep in mind I'm a noob too:

-favorite foods is on the first page of the familiar's genus chapter. all familiars of the same genus have the same favorite food. so read the first paragraph of the genus page in the wizards companion.

-give Lemahl lots of ice cream, which will raise his evasiveness (and its his favorite food). he wont get hit as much.

-if mobs run away from you it is because of you being a higher level

- Oh, genus is like the element the monster is? Cause I have a hard time seeing what the symbols indicates, though I can see waterdrop is water type monster. So if I meet a fire type monster I would have an advantage using my water familiar in such a battle?

- I gave Lemahl two ice creams yeah, and just got Sid and as I saw he is great at evasion he got the rest of the items.

I seriously love this game so far. I thought Tomb Raider / The Last of Us were the best game I had played this year, but Ni No Kuni might take the care so far. It's like combining Final Fantasy XII with Pokémon elements and other classic features, while reminding me a little bit of Naruto (the artistic style I wanted from the Ultimate Ninja Storm series) and Harry Potter with the hole witch thing.

dunno what genus comes down to, but if you look at the table of contents in the familiar section of the wizards companion, the first page of each chapter will tell you the genus favorite foods

or you can use this link

as for deciding what elements to use during a fight, i generally only take into account the signs (star, moon, sun, planet).

although sometimes if I'm casting spells with Oliver I'll try to guess what element might be most effective.

Yeah I found it. Genus is basically like what element type they are in Pokémon language.

That's what I don't get, the signs. Is it the small square beside the avatars that indicate which of these they are? Which is the better and weakest of star, moon, sun and planet?
