Miyamoto teases "new franchise" for 2014

Its in his contract that he is not allowed to talk about his hobbies to the press.

Why on earth would he agree to something like that? I would like to think Nintendo needs him more than he needs Nintendo, so he could just be like "Fuck you, I'm Shigeru fucking Miyamoto, I do what I want." and Nintendo would have to accept...because he's fucking Miyamoto and they would be doomed without him.

After the Donkey Kong Freeze fiasco I'm taking this with a MOUNTAIN of salt.
Like some earlier posts I'm already expecting dissapointment.

(I'm talking in terms of Nintendo hype)

I understand what you're saying but this really isn't the same thing since we actually know we're getting something new this time and given that its Miyamoto its probably going to be something interesting and not some random Mario spinoff.

Might be that second project Koizumi hinted at EAD Tokyo. But of course, it's a "Miyamoto" game. You know the executive senior supervising managing producer. Or it might just be some small EAD team working on something that never gets released as usual, and ends up a mini-game somewhere else.

I feel like the only person who wouldn't care if it was something new but with old characters like Luigi's Mansion or Kirby's Epic Yarn. I'd only be disappointed if it was something like Wii Music. I'd prefer it not to be tied into the Mario series though.

My thoughts exactly, except with the added bonus category scenario of it being a new game with new gameplay and new characters. After Pikmin I can't help but wonder what else Miyamoto can conjure up from his "based-on-life-experiences" imagination.

After gardening, playing music, watching King Kong (= a contested one), plumbing / visiting New York (?), and exploring the woods and caves of Japan as a child, I can't help but be curious what is inspiring him these last few years. Maybe his kids (= a generation based rogue-like like Rogue Galaxy), learning English (= Wii language University), or even being criticised being the press (= a tower defense type of game)?

Fingers crossed that whatever he is making, it will be something cool, colorful and creative at least.

Hoping for something entirely new - new characters, new story, etc. I'm not really expecting that, of course, but it would be nice.

Ah, you may be right about the developer behind the project. I forgot EAD Tokyo said it would be making an announcement soon on a new project.

He was talking about franchises that actually sell.

See?
(Games with Wii U sequels bolded)

Wii Sports (81.99)
Mario Kart Wii (34.26)
Wii Sports Resort (31.89)
Wii Play (28.02)
NSMB Wii (27.88)
Wii Fit (22.67)

Wii Fit Plus (20.86)

Super Mario Galaxy (11.72)

Super Smash Bros. Brawl (11.49)

Plus:
Donkey Kong Country Returns (~5)
Wii Party (~8)

This line up is not a coincidence.

You are correct, it's not a coincidence. And it's also not a coincidence that I will be spending more money a non-Nintendo platform for the foreseeable future.

He's been working on Wii U Music
You jest, but believe me it will be a game that most people here on NeoGaf go into an insane rage over. He cannot make anything decent any more. Or should I say, he could it's just that Nintendo's current state mean they need to make cheap, mainstream accessible titles with as much guarantee of success as possible.

Yep, the amount of hate here is laughable.

The internet is full of people who have never designed a game but know better how to make a good game than the most influential game designer of all time.

NFC usage is a good bet, but I would hope it's some kind of adventure game, or an RTS with emphasis on building a civilisation, kind of like anno / dawn of discovery.

Why is Smash not bolded? I'm happy to hear about Miyamoto's new franchise and am pumped to see the result. Miyamoto's games almost always are fantastic,so can't wait!

Fack, there's a shitload of Wii U games coming out.

How the fuck did this happen?

Every month is a major release....

It was referencing Miyamoto's comment about the line-up being in place by Mario Kart's release.

"Nintendo has no new IP!"

"There's plenty new, smaller IP on the eShop like Pushmo and Dillon's Rolling Western"

"They're only on the eShop, they don't count"

"Miyamato's making a new IP in 2014"

"It's too late/It'll be some casual bullshit"

Perhaps he cares about the company he helped grow?

I expect this to be incredibly disappointing either for core gamers or for people who understand what "new franchise" means, or possibly both.

I would love so much for this to be something non-casual and exciting, like Pikmin or Super Mario Galaxy. Sadly with Nintendo's focus still on the expanded audience I expect it to be something with a strong casual/gimmick slant. Here's hoping I'm wrong.

I wish that Nintendo would just strip Miyamoto of all responsibilities and just stick the old duffer in a building with a few small teams to rattle out eShop titles with all the freedom of Nintendo's early days.

I'm just wondering what they'll do after they get the "heavy hitters" out. During the Wii era they were more evenly spaced.

El Capitan Todd
Plumbers Creed has already been posted?

Which Nintendo themselves choose to ignore for unknown reasons.

They always advertise their games close to release. And why does it matter that Nintendo "ignores" a game or not? A game is judged on its own merits, not on external factors such as sales or interest.

By new franchise, I'm assuming either new character/genre they already do or new character/genre they haven't tackled yet. Like Pikmin.
But what genres haven't they done yet...?
Either way, bring it onnnnnnn. :D

Well, Iwata did say this:

We would like as many people as possible to pick up, experience and enjoy our video games. It is important to let people who originally had no interest in games, find themselves enjoying Wii U in their living room every day. We must also satisfy avid video game fans. When it comes to Wii, as “Wii Sports” spread throughout the world at a sensational speed, some misunderstood that all Wii could do is enable them to play games by moving the Wii Remote. With Wii U, therefore, we planned to satisfy existing video game fans first and provide new surprises later.

It means what it is meant to mean. A game in which you primarily contact your foot with the ball.

No it means a game played on foot, as played by rough and tough true blooded americans, rather than on horse like those damned uptight lazy british redcoat elitists used to play. That the british took the "football" from us is an insult to American pride.

Seriously though I would play Mario American Football.

You really think NIntendo would be doomed without Miyamoto? You have a very myopic view of the company.

Even though certain self acclaimed ,,core gamers'' should know better, you can't blame the mainstream for looking at Nintendo as the ,,Mario Zelda company'' if they do jackshit to promote anything new they have. Not to mention if they do the exact opposite with games like Xenoblade.
And no, considering how poorly they've handled W101 until now, there's barely anything they could still do to raise awareness and proper interest. Not sure what the game had to do with the post I was quoted on anyway. Guy said that their new gameplay concepts are as good a new franchise every year. But that Miyamoto-excuse falls apart when all of a sudden they have nothing but last gen/3DS lookalikes in their known franchises for a whole year on their brandnew platform.

Give me a 200 hour HD RPG Miyamoto, and all is forgiven.

Nintendo is already preparing that. Not sure why you'd need Miyamoto for that though.

Oh here we go, Wii Music hate. E308 was horrendous but that is not how you play the game correctly, unless you're totally unco.

Whatever it is, it will be fun to see the reaction.

Here's hoping for a new quirky Nintendo game that can soar to the hights of their traditional IP's.

That's good news, hopefully not too late in 2014. Also not too casual (animal crossing/ nintendo dogs and cats).

Otherwise why tell us, right? They know the audience that listens to these sorts of announcements surely.
