Full X1: access to all graphic/hardware features like any AAA game would get.
App program: limited access to hardware and features.

CBOAT says its going to be an app program. But the achievements/cloud support gives me hope.

Do Windows Apps support Xbox achievements?

I think this a part of their "timeline" they mentioned they will reveal at Gamescom. Basic app store support now and then they will work achivements and cloud support into the mix later.

Edit:
Games on the Windows 8 app store have achievements.

I guess cloud and achievements might already be a part of the Windows App store?

They should have announced this as soon as they made the decision. Why would you hide that info? Wtf?

To have a a big, headline grabbing announcement at Gamescom. They announced a ton of games at E3 and don't seem to care all that much about GC but don't want to get left out of the major news.

All XB1 being able to be switched to devkit mode with a auth from Microsoft is opening some big doors to piracy... I mean, sure it will be super secured and it's not like this will mean the console will get pirated on day 1 but this gives one more ways for people to potentially find a way around the console's DRM.

You probably need to contact them and get some authorization key to access it and anything you do or make will have your ID code linked to it.

Provided this isn't locked down as apps instead of full games as rumored, good on Microsoft. That's extremely forward thinking and even gives them a leg up over Sony in the indie department with the "every Xbone is a dev kit" idea.

Wow seems sony and fans destroyed xbone original plans. The only difference now might be price 500 to 400. Which is still pretty good position. Hopefully indies make money and more games. Gamers win no matter what :)

What DRM?

Well, like a full game and some app that just tells the time, or gets RSS feeds etc.

FYI: still no sign this isn't a re-announcement of the WinRT app store ghetto.

Shoved in a corner, hardware limitations, designed more for Netflix than games (see the state of the Windows 8 Store and you'll see what I mean).

[Edit] Skulls of the Shogun is a fine example of precisely why the champagne should remain in the fridge until we get clarification.
Ok, thanks. What happened with Skulls of the Shogun?

1000% increase in preorders confirmed.

What DRM? You mean the Kinect requirement stuff?

The DRM that will be on every discs and in the system OS preventing multiple installs of the same "cd-key". This is obviously disabled on a devkit. So, if people find a way to switch their XB1 into devkit mode without Microsoft's approval then they could simply go and download any games ont he net and install them on the machine.

You probably need to contact them and get some authorization key to access it and anything you do or make will have your ID code linked to it.

Yeah of course you will. I'm not saying that the console will automatically get pirated because of that. All I'm saying is that it's giving one more way the console could potentially get pirated.

Will indie devs will be limited to the 2 CPU cores and 3GB of RAM that the Windows OS uses? Has MS said one way or the other? I think that would be pretty important.

That every game and experience can take advantage of all of the features of Xbox One and Xbox LIVE

This sounds to me like all devs can use the full potential of the X1.

The same DRM consoles have had for years that prevents rampant piracy?

Ahh, I see. Thanks both for the clarification.

Posted this in the other thread, but I think it's probably appropriate here as well...

The fact that the console itself is a dev kit makes me think they've been planning this for quite some time. It's not like Sony can just flip a switch and make every PS4 a dev kit as well.

Give Microsoft credit where it's due; they kicked butt on this one. Now if they can lower the price, dump Kinect, and make the console at least as powerful as the PS4, I may pick one up.

Seems like isn't only for shared Windows 8 market games.

I made this post the last time someone claimed they were basically the same system now ->

● Kinect 2.0 mandatory vs. PS Camera Optional
● No Self-Publishing vs. Self-Publishing Use System as Dev Kit vs. ????
● "Intentionally didn't target the highest end specs" vs. As powerful as money allowed
● Haptic Feedback Triggers vs. PS4 Touch Pad
● Asymmetric Analog Sticks vs. Symmetric Analog Sticks
● New Improved D-Pad vs. Light Indicator (Health, Etc) and Controller Speaker
● No Headset Packed-in vs. Headset Packed-in
● $499.99 vs. $399.99
● Snap/HBO Go/Tried-and-True Online infrastructure vs. PS+ value; critical integration of Share feature
● "Power of Cloud" for dedicated servers, some low level enhancements for games vs. "Power of Cloud" for streaming PS1, PS2 or PS3 games
● All-in-One-Entertainment Device vs. "A system for the gamers, by the gamers."
● Does not allow previous gen peripherals; proprietary set up forces reset vs. 98% of your peripherals from last-gen should work
● Paywall for basically everything vs. Paywall for multiplayer only; free-to-play and all apps remain free for all.
● 15 Exclusives in First Year, 8 new IP and ??? total in development vs. 20 Exclusives in First year, 12 new IP and 30 total in development.
● SmartGlass integration vs. PS Vita integration

You have to bear in mind that the atrocious management staff responsible for fun activities such as

- Having an entirely inept first party portfolio
- Killing Halo and Gears
- Weaker system with heavier price tag
- DRM
- Always online
- Laughable indie treatment

Are still going to be at large making similar decisions over the next few years, any reasonable person would acknowledge that unless Microsoft fire the entirety of the upper echelon that composes their management, that they are still set for an awful few years.

I do hope they have some other GamesCom surprises in the pipeline now this one has leaked, it's sad that they didn't get their big reveal and "oh-shit!" moment.

This is a big step in the right direction for MS. The every console is a dev kit thing seems great too, but frankly I'm concerned about security issues.

The 360 got hacked pretty quickly.

Good for them. At least they're correcting their mistakes.

Will people forget that they made those mistakes in the first place? Is it too late? Who knows, but they're going in the right direction.
