Phoenix Wright Virgin - How is the iOS HD Trilogy?

I'm looking to start this series in release order. Should I try to play find it on the original DS cart, or is the iOS Trilogy the same/better?

People think the DS versions are better.

I'm playing through the HD iOS version and I think it's great, and you can get the three games for only $17.

No idea, I haven't played either version. I know it's not what you asked, but the WiiWare games work perfectly, and are good ports.

I haven't bought the HD trilogy yet, but from the two free trial cases I've played, some parts of its aesthetic felt dodgy when bumped up to higher resolutions. Other parts felt okay. That said, if you're a virgin to the series, you probably won't be as sensitive to it. As far as story and content goes, it's identical.

Plus I don't know how much the trilogy goes for on cartridge, but the three of them together can't be cheaper than the iOS trilogy if you're price sensitive.

the iOS version is easier to buy and cheaper at that. either way, you MUST play these games. with headphones.

so, so good.

I've played both. Only real problem with the iOS version is the slowdown, but even then it's not gamebreaking or anything.

iOS version is probably cheaper than buying them all separate anyway.

I really like the visuals in the iOS version:

I'm playing for the first time myself on iOS. I'm still on the first game, but I think it's absolutely delightful.

Like, I'm already hungry to get a 3DS for the new one. This is so great.

iOS version is disappointing because it's not as good as it could have been, but it's still a superior version if you've never played PW and are not used to the original sprites

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Get it on iPad. Almost done with the first game and I doubt I could be convinced the DS games are superior. The high-definition artwork is stunning and really pops off the screen.

In the "DS" specific case of the first game, you do notice that the 3D rendered evidence you can investigate and "spin around" are pretty low-res and maintain the DS fidelity. Kind of jarring, but it also shows how wonderful the rest of the game looks as an update.

It's a great way to play them.

Some of the portraits are better than others though. The Emma Sky one above looks great but other characters like Larry look really bad. His in particular it looks like someone with jittery hands traced over the official art.

I'm playing it and it seems like a good port, but it looks much worse in HD than the original 2D art imho. It's not a very good fit for iPhone too, since it's a lot of just tapping the screen to get to the next line of dialog, and holding the phone horizontally for long stretches of time is a pain. I imagine it's a much better fit on iPad.

Justice for All and Trials and Tribulations have GBA-quality sound instead of the enhanced sound quality the DS games had. Also there are more typos in the iOS versions.

Yeah, a lot of the art that originates from the first game's first case is pretty bad. I suspect that it was the original vertical slice concept for the game, which explains the lower quality of the assets.

Anyhow, the iOS trilogy is great, but play it on an iPhone/iPod Touch; the art doesn't hold up as well on an iPad's bigger screen. I can't speak for the iPad mini, though.

I will definitely attest to the amount of typos in the iOS port.

It only happens occasionally and never enough to detract from the flow of the narrative structure, but it does seem to have popped up more and more as cases go on. First few cases of AA1 I barely noticed anything wrong, but case 5...at least a few times per hour of play I notice a misspelling or a grammar error.

Not sure how that happened if they were not present in the DS game.

Why? Are there differences aside from the enhanced visuals?
Heh, it's the so-called "enhanced" visuals that kind of drag things down a bit.

The problem is that the visuals are only partially updated for higher resolutions leaving you with this weird mismatch between high and low resolution pixel art.

On top of that, and it's not a huge deal here, the game screen updates at 60 fps on DS allowing for smoother transitions and menu operation while the iOS version is limited to something like 20 fps. The game doesn't have much motion, of course, but it's a strange limitation.

You can play it holding the phone vertically too, which is what I do a lot of the time since it's much more comfortable.

It's a fine port. Some purists prefer the DS versions because they have a problem with how a few of the characters look, but for 99% of people the lower price, mostly better visuals, and convenience of the iOS ports make them the better choice for someone just getting into the series.

I will say that for some reason the 5th case in the first game, which was added when the game was ported to DS from GBA, is for some reason a little jacked up. It has spelling errors all over the place, a few weird oversights where other characters will move their mouths when Phoenix is talking, dialogue will repeat, and other annoying things. Also, one scene near the end that uses the touch screen is glitched, and I had to do it correctly about five time before it let me progress.

All that said, in my opinion the annoyances aren't bad enough to warrant paying several times more for the series, having to play it in low resolution, and not having the convenience of having it on your phone/ tablet. I think I'm a pretty big fan of the series, I've played every game (the iOS port was the fourth time I played through the first game) and IMO iOS port is a no-brainer.

Do I have to use the microphone to play? I really don't want to yell at my phone constantly.

I don't know how the iOS versions handle it, but it's never mandatory in the DS games because they also allow you to just tap a button on the screen to object. It ought to be the same.

I'm pretty sure you're only ever forced to use the mic for blowing for the first game's fifth case for some parts, where you have to check for fingerprints. The WiiWare version just had you shake the remote instead, I remember.

Yea I just reached that section in the fifth case. On iOS, adding the powder worked fine tapping the screen, but wiping it away...well the game gave no directions and nothing I did on the screen seemed to do a thing. Eventually the fingerprint just appeared though after random wiping/scrubbing, but it did not at all feel like I actively removed the powder. It was a bit of a jarring transition as I'm sure the DS handled it better with a mic.

i recall you had to hold screen then drag and let go. was really weird.

It's a really shitty port objectively in terms of performance, typos, and some wonky art, but for $15 or w/e it cost, its well worth it.

Also they removed Pearl's theme.

Good if you haven't played them. Otherwise get the DS/Wiiware version imo.

You can jailbreak to change the font, since the default one looks dreadful.

I had already forgotten about the finger print dust, that was annoying and weird. Still not a deal breaker by any means, but that case really needs a patch.

The DS versions are definitely the best ones but they're hard as shit to find and they're rather expensive. Buy the WiiWare or the iOS version since the game is essentially the same in all, with minor differences in porting.

I've been playing the iOS version up to 1-4, and I've noticed lots of instances where the lips don't move when characters talk, wrong names on the dialogue box, and misplaced animations. They don't ruin the game, but they do detract a bit. Also, a lot of animations have a reduced frame count, like the one with Phoenix holding a piece of paper, which went from four frames to only two.

For the record, the DS games are no longer expensive and hard to find. Amazon has all of the AA games for $15-20 each.

good for a value, and being able to play them on your iDevice.

With that being said, if you have access to and are ok with playing them on a DS, that is absolutely the way to go.

And of course you can truly go all out with it, grab a 3DS, all four games (including Apollo Justice), and hold on to your horses for AA5 later this fall.

Wait why does the iOS trilogy version show up as free on the appstore but then there is iOS phoenix wright for 5 bucks?

Do I have to buy them in app?

yes. iOS Phoenix Wright is not the same. Do not buy that. I don't even know why Capcom hasn't delisted that version.

DS versions are way better in terms of sprite use.
iOS version is cheap and if it's your first time playing the game, then I guess it's fine.
Wish they truly made it HD by also improving the animation. HD sprites + choppy animation just makes me dizzy.
