If they manage to price match the PS4 and include a Kinect sensor then I'll probably opt for it over Sony's offering. Given the RAM revelations and my preference for the 360 this generation it seems like an obvious jump.

Wait, are we still talking about the since debunked "RAM revelations" from Eurogamer?

The DRM reversal, along with the other changes would most likely have already impacted any forecasted plan for a higher profit-per-user.

If they're serious about their indie policy reversals, and changing retail kits into dev-kits, then they're also losing out on profits from the developer side of the equation.

Looking at their 'Games for Gold' approach, I wouldn't be surprised if they would also try to increase the value-proposition of XBL Gold if they feel concerned by Sony in the long-run... also another hit on Gold profits.

Lowering the price to sell at a loss/more loss?

From a consumer standpoint, it's been all shining and roses as it seems like MS is doing all the right things to appeal to consumers, but all these 'right things' are pissing off the suits who was probably expecting XB1 to accelerate a higher revenue per user, but at this rate, it seems that they'll see a lower profits from a lower expected install base.

Anything is possible.

Microsoft is a business. They should react to consumer response. They should react to market pressure (they know they are losing to PS4 preorders in North America).

Sony should have reacted to Five Hundred and Ninety Nine US dollars in 2006. Instead they said fuck you and killed the $500 SKU at launch, ensuring that all early adopters would have to pay $600.

Microsoft should be praised for their actions, not mocked. Sony 2006 should have been more like Microsoft 2013.

Kinect is integrated so much into the OS, I doubt they would be able to drop it so quickly. Maybe with a system update down the line.

Yeah, people said that DRM couldn't be dropped quickly.

Its going to be 399 without Kinect within the first year anyway.

Might as well do it now and not potentially cripple the system with a poor launch.

Maybe 399 euros but fat chance at the price being lowered. I firmly believe that MS will introduce some type of subsidized pricing for NA at Gamescon.

If you subscribe to Live for 24 months at $14.99 per month, you'll get the Xbox One for $299.

All MS has to do is put "$299*" on the price tag and it will look cheaper than the PS4. And it will work otherwise DirectTV would be out of business by now! I think they may need to release a document just to cover the fine print.

As it seems that the Gamescom showcase event is press only and not public, I guess, if this rumor is true, this would be a dedicated event.

If this is true, they are basically considering to dump Kinect.

You know, in my opinion, it is a positive thing for customers that they are going to change things, but - for me - the damage is done. They have shown me that Microsoft - at least at this point in time - is unreliable and has a very bad attitude.

Also, I wonder... let's say that they are dropping Kinect... that would mean that they are just dropping their entire philosophy. At least right now they have a course: an Xbox that can run multiple apps and has Kinect heavily integrated. If they dump Kinect, than they are basically sailing without navigational tools. No plans. No ideas.

Again, if true, this is a positive thing for customers, but for me the damage has been done + I'm worried about where they are headed in the long-term (especially if they drop Kinect).

I'd laugh if they dropped to $399 and Sony followed suit by dropping to $299

If Pachter is a reliable source for anything, on the GT panel at E3 he was told by a Sony exec (unnamed) that they can't and couldn't go any lower than $399, at least for the first little while.

There may be some truth to that statement, or perhaps not. Its a beefy console, can't be that cheap to manufacture.

Quoted for so much truth. I despise all this talk of HUUURRR SO REACTIONARY....

GOOD. This is how corporations should be.

They wont drop the Kinnect requirement. It's the cornerstone of their whole "media box" strategy.

Selling at $399 with a kinnect would mean taking an insane financial loss. Having said that they are rich enough to front that bill.

I still wouldn't buy a console with a live mic/camera in my living room even if it costs $200.

I would honestly laugh tho if Sony ended up undercutting it at 350 or 299. Thats too thin of margins probably but that shit would be hilarious

If this is true, Microsoft is really impressing me with their willingness to adapt to their competitor and listen to consumer demands.

Now if they only listen to us about Windows 8. WHERE'S OUR REAL START MENU? ;p

Tell us all about this RAM revelation....

Obviously 3 days of nonsense was enough to actually sway some people, lol.

Ps4 still has the superior RAM setup

I don't buy it.

I looked around the rest of this site and it's just another blog making guesses.

Hope its true, so by 2015 when I might want one they price will be even lower.

Sony was already losing $200-$300 per PS3 sold at 599.

A 'reaction' would've been catatrosphic to Sony. Less we forget that Sony also had an extremely poor line-up of games for around 2 years, which meant that Sony was unlikely to recoup back the loss from software sales for the short term anyway.

I've said it before, but here's my hypothesis:

Kinect is what allows WP/W8 apps to work on your TV. It's a last ditch effort to build an ecosystem (WP/W8/Surface/Xbone). It's also there for advertising, but I think the primarily purpose is to allow cross apps. The Xbone is supposed to bolster these other initiatives, and that's worth a huge price to MS up to, and including, destroying the Xbox program.

The article seems as masturbatory as the domain name.

But speaking of bad euphemisms, does anybody here think MS can easily swallow another $100 off the cost of entry?

drm woops just kidding
shitting on indies woops just kidding
$499 woops just kidding

at least they're fixing mistakes, but they haven't given me any reason to trust them for a while.

honestly, I give them props for at least listening to consumer feedback, swallowing their pride and saying "fuck it, just give them what they want". I'm still not picking up one at launch (still waiting for a good game), but good shit to Microsoft if this is true. At the very least, it will keep Sony on their toes, and that's good for everyone.

I WISH Nintendo said "woops just kidding" with the Wii U. even once. they just don't give a fuuuuuuuuck

So basically if they price drop it, it wouldn't involve removing the mandatory Kinect and MS would eat the loss. Yeah don't see it happening, but if they do then damn that is an incredibly ballsy move.

I think they really should be ballsy. With Nintendo floundering on the WIi-U front, they just need to charge into Sony and get a good battle going for the next-gen gamers. I need to see devs and pubs fighting for attention and making awesome games.

MS assumed that dropped the DRM would redeem them in the eyes of the gamers. If this is true I think they are slowly realizing that GAMERS ARE NOT DUMB FUCKs
