Microsoft Confirms 53MHz GPU Speed Upgrade For Xbox One

If this was a downclock of 50, this whole thread would be exploding.

The last thing the weaker console should do is downclock to even greater difference, especially for $500. Of course it would be exploding. MS is giving you better bang for the $500 so that's a good thing. Their specs still aren't good enough, but they're better now.

I've seen more than one post like this. A GPU upclock has NOTHING TO DO WITH A PHYSICAL HARDWARE CHANGE. So many people here making statements without even understanding this stuff.

I can push my GPU in my PC up and down in clockspeed at any time. Microsoft and Sony could both do this at will if they wanted to, ON THE FINISHED HARDWARE. It's just a matter of safe heat levels.

That's the point. On PC you buy a GPU and it won't be anywhere near it's max clock speed unless stated otherwise, so you can ramp it up should you choose to take the risk. Consoles are closed boxes, you would think they have the numbers/heat/etc on lock by now.

Even with X1 gets any sort of positive news you always make it a negative one.

It's always the same few guys that enter these threads and let it be known that they have no interest in x1 and that it sucks. It's like that they need to constantly reassure themselves that they're backing the right guy. Sad lol

It's still an underwhelming machine for the asking price.

People who say stuff like this confuse me. I could look at alot of cars and think the same thing but other people love them. Its underwhelming to you not to everyone.
Still not buying one at launch

I'll tell you one thing, from reading this thread it's lucky MS didn't reveal a 53Mhz down grade. Now that really would have made a difference!

Negative? I'm stating a fact, they never released their spec, so how is this an upgrade?

All this is, is an announcement of their clock speed for the first time. They call it an "upgrade" because that sounds better in PR.

because Whitten said
It's actually been really good news for us, and an example of that is we've tweaked up the clock speed on our GPU from 800mhz to 853mhz

thats an upgrade from their initial plans

I did 1.84 and 1.32 but it's 1.31.

1.3 to 1.8 is 38%
1.31 to 1.84 is 40%

Well it doesn't matter because 1.84 and 1.31 are rounded numbers as well!

Never round off until the end!

With a fully rigorous calculation you get XBO 29 % (28.92) less capable and PS4 is 41 % (40.68) more capable.

I don't need to reassure myself of anything, I'm stating the facts clear so that things aren't misinterpreted by people (like you).

This is not an upgrade.

Microsoft says a whole lot of shit; fact is, they never announced their clock speed publicly, this is the first time. It's like saying "Hey, we had a GPU, at 0MHZ and we made it 800!".

You don't understand how it works either apparently. Hardware doesn't change with clock speed changes.

I shouldn't even have bothered to dignify that "zomg the ignorance" comment with a reply, but here we go.

First of all, stop trying to shove assumptions into other people's heads.
I know what an upclock is. As do most people here, I assume.

Why did they upclock the GPU at the last minute?
Could it be that they had a lot of yield problems until now?
Did they not take this into account earlier?

I am afraid that Xbone is going to have hardware problems at launch (like the 360 had). I haven't had an RROD, but I've had countless DRE's. I can't play anything off disk without DRE's occuring.

How long does the chip fabrication process take?

To be fair, although I am a huge Sony fan and getting a PS4 at launch, I am also very, very excited for Xbone and plan on getting one at launch as well (sue me)

Ryse looks like a guilty pleasure (my wife and kids will probably get a kick out of it) Killer Instinct III looks awesome to me and, inferior hardware to PS4 or not, Forza 5 has the best graphics of any racer I have ever seen, hands down.

BUT(big but)

I still have a bad taste in my mouth concerning the launch 360 I bought 8 years ago...

I am just looking for MS to give me a little reassurance launch Xbones wont be a repeat of the RRoD drama :/

Why is everyone acting like this was a press release and calling it an "announcement"? It's a conversation on a podcast. The title of the podcast doesn't even mention the word "Upgrade".

Announcing this seems weird since their old strategy seemed to dodge saying any real numbers.

But any gain is a good gain, assuming the box runs stable

Nobody is spinning this into a bad thing. People are spinning this into a "not good enough" thing. People want at least spec parity for $400 and the only thing the $100 price difference getting you is the camera. I don't see that happening though.

So much this

It's not going to help!

Developers won't even take advantage of the 500 gflop increase on the PS4, you can forget about 50 gflops even registering with devs!

He says, they tweaked from 800 to 853 - that totally fits the definition of an announcement of an upgrade.

Hence the concern that they are doing this out of desperation in order to try to be more competitive with Sony. Which is good in and of itself, however it would be bad if they are knowing pushing the console beyond its safe thermal limits and compromising the longevity of the box purely for a measly extra 53MHz.

Of course they're the only ones that will be aware of the console's thermal profile. So I imagine they would have done tests on final or near-to-final silicon and together with the humongous box design, they've decided its still operating within the safe thermal envelope.

It does make me wonder though, whether Sony might start looking into an upclock after this news? I'm sure they've looked at it already. On one side they have a simpler and likely smaller APU design, and so should produce less heat. On the other they don't have the might huge box, but then their are however way more adept at designing cooling solutions for consoles (see PS3 fan/heat sink assembly). Will be interesting to see if they respond to this.

Maybe because they thought the number could change, as it just did?

I wasn't implying they were being shady

but more that perhaps the PR strategy and what they are allowed to talk about has changed

I think this is more interesting than the actually increase in clock speed

Don't bother. Simple logic seems to go over his head.

Wow, MS bumping specs while Sony takes RAM away from games. It's time to rethink who has the momentum going into next-gen.
