Civilization V Brave New World |OT| More than Content Tourism

There should be a special calculation for artillery, frigates and aircraft. Civs that have access to those are far stronger military wise than the actual stats reflect because of the power of those units - they are all game changing in the era they appear.

Kept up the good fight last night, mugged Dido by attacking a city-state she took over the second she claimed it, and founded another city in a safe location.

Then Ghandi came to me with a peace treaty to get Washington to leave him alone which included his only other city. I thought why not... and promptly inherited a 24 pop city that decimated my happiness to -15. Tried to trade it to Washington but he's all like "No thanks, brah." Kinda fucked.

Can't you just raze it? Or doesn't that work for cities you've gained through diplomacy?

It's the only plan I can think if at the moment – raze it until I can handle the pop size. What makes me hesitant is I'm sitting at -15 unhappiness and I've only puppeted it yet. Things are going to get worse before they get better.

If I see a settler coming for my lands I almost always declare war and kill it before it gets the chance to settle - and this is coming from someone who generally plays peacefully. A settler coming for territory you consider yours is something that generally only occurs in the early game, and by the mid game, after you've settled your lands, the AI has generally forgotten all about it.

Man, I'm so passive in that situation, and would be more likely (or certain!) to simply curse my rotten luck, and lack of foresight in not grabbing that land sooner... but then let them keep it, hoping things stay friendly. Shit, I'm passive.

DEO, I shall try your tactic in my next game - thanks mate.

They really need to improve the way the AI estimates their military strength. Suleiman thought he'd crush me, but he forgot to notice that I had artillery (where he only had canons).

Dude got crushed hard. Basically his entire army was slaughtered.

lol, I always love that personally. Civs constantly taunting me for how weak I am, and then I systematically crush their armies when they try to invade.

Having the same attitude towards it as DEO really improved my game too. By and large the civ whose settler you captured will be willing to make peace immediately - or is far enough away that you won't care anyway. Plus you get a free worker, which is important early on (see Fragamemnon's posts about never building a worker).

Being more aggressive in general brought me from winning +/- half of my Emperor games to winning nearly all of them. It's actually much easier to be a warmonger for certain sections of the game (usually when you get a new ranged unit - Comp Bows, Crossbows, Frigates and Artillery are my big war-times).

It really helps you do a better job countering some peace-boom civs like the Inca, Shoshone, and India. On higher difficulties, if you take them out usually you'll get really nice cities with some wonders and great works -- and they usually have pretty sad armies they'll send to die against your defenses when you declare. Then you can take your time wearing down their cities one by one.

Suing for peace can be a little funky too. You can slaughter 500 of their units, whilst losing none of your own and AI will say "Ha, come to beg for mercy?" if they still have a relatively strong army.

Damnit, I was going to sleep at one (already bad timing...) but then the Ottomans, the Shashone and Japan forced through a World Ideology = Autocracy vote, all denounced me and then started calling me names. The Iroquai told me the Shashone were prepping an attack force to take out my colony city so I got the war machine geared up - luckily I was sitting on a stupidly large number of funds - and then that asshole Suleman dropped a great general on my border and stole my salt/silver mines. I declared war and we fought for 5 years or so. Suleman was a generation behind in tech so I basically overran him, but the Shashone was my military equal and had a freaking flood of units just running at my colony city. Managed to defend it and was about to go nuclear when he sued for peace.

Damnit. I'll probably have to go for a science victory now... the entire world apparently went up in revolution while I was concentrating on this war and now everyone's either Autocrat or wants to be an Autocrat, except me because my tourism/culture is balls.

Is there a way to see how much damage aircraft will take if you bomb places? Seems to be guesswork. Also finding it difficult to work out how exactly the Revolution stuff works, though it's apparent higher tourism = better

I think you can perform an Air Sweep with which identifies ground resistance.

What do you guys do with captured missionaries/prophets (foreign religion)?

For some reason Morocco decided to declare war on me, so as I was barreling down on their capital they spawned about 5 missionaries for whatever reason and I captured them all. As punishment I'm currently using them to explore the far reaches of the sea before I guess I'll just delete them.

Tha's exactly what I do, too. I plant a handler in their company who forces them to continue on, doggedly exploring the entire planet until there is nothing left to explore. The heretics know what is coming, but their blind devotion keeps them clinging to a hope of salvation, and rescue.

In the end, my handlers know exactly what to do: they kill with fire.

Longbowmen -> Gatling Gun can be a very pleasant, deadly force. Extra range on a gatling gun seems slightly op to me.

Oh and Ship Of The Line's and Exploration are great too. An extra movement on top of england's extra movement? Yes please.

+ the wonder that gives more naval movement

that exists right?

I love how ruthless and cynical this type of game makes me. Behind in points and only a few years left until the end? Luckily there's your whipping boy Civ right next to you so you can take their capitol. Oh, also organize World War III against your biggest competitor. There's practically war everywhere now.

It's amazing how easy it is to be angry at other Civs just because there's a person leading them to be mad at. I fucking hate you Suleman, you piece of shit. Fear my military!

Loving this Prince game now that I'm deep into it. Carthage and I are now in an arms race because between Sweden and I, her partner, Attila, has been completely marginalized.

India has been wiped off the map because I finally figured out not to accept any peace treaties from him because he always offers them when Washington is beating the crap out of him. Conversely, the last time I was pushing Dido back to her capital, my advance was stalled when she must have made a peace offering to Washington.

Entering the Modern Age, my biggest problem is I only have access to one oil resource and its off shore. As soon as I can build planes, I locking Dido up in Carthage and throwing away the key.

Of course, Sweden just declared war on me, complicating things, but knowing Dido Washington and I make up the top 3 of military might in some order, I'm not all that concerned. It'll give me a chance to raze some cities that have been stunting my cities expansion.

Last minute (OK not really last minute it was 2040) diplomatic victory get!

Making the Hubble telescope so I can use the two scientists to rush through to Globalization and use my diplomats to gain the delegates I needed was far more exciting than I expected. I feel like I pulled some Oceans 11 shit.

I swear to god getting Petra sniped from you by 3 or 2 turns is the most disheartening feeling. I had Desert Folklore too so I was in prime position to abuse Petra like nobody's business...

Yeah, I really really hate that shit. Especially since that's one of the only wonders I bother building if the terrain dictates it.

Sounds like a good reason for an invasion to me.

I was thinking, it'd be cool if the game took snapshots of the mini-map every 10 turns to show the growth and evolution of the world at the end of the game.

There should be a Tundra equivalent wonder to Petra
Good idea for a mod, but I can't think of a man-made wonder, only natural ones, which are pretty hard to add.
Perhaps Udachnaya pipe? "+1 Hammer and +1 Gold for tundra tiles worked by the city."
Or maybe Trans-Alaska Pipeline. "Provides double the amount of Oil resources worked by this city."

Just started up playing Civ 5 again after getting BNW in the summer sale. I decided to start up the Renaissance scenario and give that a try before diving into the new end game features on BNW. I went with Ayyudin Caliphate since I like playing with tons of cash. Spent the first half of the game in fifth or so place, until I could get Camel Archers and bazaars and trade routes rocking. Got up to around 200g per turn and switched over to research, so I could get Exploration for the Caravels to the new world for some nice VP. Took over most of Spain. Rocking a solid 1k VP lead at this point. All systems go. Then I make the bone headed mistake of invading Austria which is just a few tiles over. Between them and me is Tunis. I figure no big deal, I'll just bribe them with cash and roll up and grab a couple of Austria's catholic cities for even more VP. I take 2 cities but can't hold on to them. Within the last ten turns, Austria takes over Tunis with a marriage pact and I lose the game in the last 4 turns by like 40VP. Arrrgh.

Darius just beat me by one turn to Petra and before that by two turns to The Hanging Gardens... Terrible game

Ouch. Do you cut forests and place production focus in the city?
If you're playing on Immortal or Deity, I wouldn't even bother with some wonders, the AI will make them first. Most of the time it's better capture a capital early on, you'll get wonders as a bonus.

Didn't have a forest to cut and focused on production. I actually shouted 'No!' out loud when I saw the notification that he finished it haha. The game wasn't going that well anyway (I wasn't fast enough to get enough good land) but I thought that since I was Babylon and had two cities next to a mountain + a ton of jungle + the pantheon that gives culture for jungle then I might just stick to it and overcome them in tech by the end (which I still might if I stick to it). The city which was supposed to have Petra was also next to a mountain.

I usually don't build too many wonders except those that I know I will probably get because the AI usually ignores: The Oracle, Forbidden Palace (if I opened Patronage) and Big Ben (if I opened Commerce). But when you see a city which would be prime for Petra it's hard to resist :)
The Hanging Garden was a mistake and I knew I probably wasn't going to get it. I tried to chop and came two turns short.

This was Immortal btw

Capturing Petra isn't that great either. You want to give your capital (or maybe a second or third city) a boost. If you capture it you either have a really good puppet that builds stupid stuff or an annexed supergrower that creates enormous amount of unhappiness.

If you want Petra on Deity you really have to commit. Beeline it, wonder boost from tradition, etc.

Next thread needs to be named Wonderholics Anonymous. Whenever I need to decide whether to build a wonder or to skip it, I go through the same internal struggle, like a pathetic junkie.

I usually play on Immortal/Deity but somehow accidentally started a game on Chieftain.

I was so turtled up that it took me 105 turns to notice >_<. Managing to grab the Great Library and unlocking Education on turn 79 should have been a huge flashing light, but nope, I kept on playing.

I marched 6 crossbow units over to my nearest neighbour only to find a single warrior defending his territory, at which point the penny dropped. Doh, what a waste of an hour. I really should pay more attention to the world around me.

I would love that. It'd be cool to be able to look back and reminisce.

"Ah, and that's when I instigated WWIII by bribing China, Egypt, and Greece into invading France. Good times."
