Would anyone recommend playing Mother 2 on a SF cart? They go for a lot cheaper than SNES, and I don't have a Wii U.

Maybe I'm weird, but I do feel like Mother 3 was sort of disappointing for me as an EarthBound fan. The story was certainly a strong point, but the more explicit storytelling made it feel more like a contemporary RPG; less distinctive.

It was definitely a good game on its own regard though.

Well, can you read the language? That's really the biggest part of it. The games are all in kana.

I just finished the game again. (after waiting a week for a replacement Wii U Gamepad charge cable)

Oh boy, I forgot how fucked up the Giygas boss battle is. I had trouble sleeping that evening, I can sure as hell tell you that.

Playing through this for the first time.

I... think I hate the combat. The music and backgrounds bug me, and i'm not finding it that interesting. How much of a diservice am I doing to myself by going the autocombat route? I'm finding that it doesn't really work a fair bit of the time, unfortunately (as in, the computer makes awful decisions for me, forcing me to die. Not healing up is a huge problem.)

Why is this game rated T now? It was rated K-A (E) during it initial release. Did standards change from almost 20 years ago and now the content in this game is deemed to be appropriate for Teens and up?

The game was never truly for kids.

Probably had to do with a combination of, at the time, games generally being viewed as "for kids" moreso than now, and the fact that the ESRB was essentially in its infancy.

They can't all be winners I guess.

You'll die a lot with auto combat lol.

How far into the game are you? I thought combat was a little boring at first (mashing attack) until you start getting PSI powers and more party members. The rolling HP gets more interesting as you go, too. A lot of frantic button pressing to get to healing a party member before they drop :)

The combat gets better as you go further, since there's more variety in the use of PSI and items. Enemies do more interesting things and you have to be on your toes. Rolling HP becomes a big factor and learning to be quick with the battle menus is key.

It's a basic combat system like any classic RPG but it's functional, peppy, and easy to keep track of.

In the early goings it's mostly just a mix of bashing and healing, but the options open up as you go on and battle dynamics definitely change.

All this said, it's not something that can be easily loved. You have to get used to it. Auto-combat is not recommended though.

Autocombat is actually extremely useful in one situation: When you're mortally wounded and the counter is rolling back and there's no time to manually go through the menus. Saved my bacon quite a few times.

But yeah other than that, it's not recommended.

Music and backgrounds....bug you? I always thought the background was awesome. Some of the music early on is meh but earthbound has its fair share if great music.

Yes, the backgrounds are just...really ugly and distracting. I want a typical field view or something. If i'm on a grassy plain, show me that! :p

As for the music, i'm actually loving it so far outside of the battle theme. I need something peppy and inspiring, which isn't provided to me during battles.

I love the ambient nature of a lot of the battle themes.

I also love the spell animations in earthbound.

Along with the background they all go so well together. Those are probably so e of my favorite things about the game. I was really glad they maintained that feel in mother 3

I need to post some tangentially related content here: At work, I did some building photography for an online archive and the cover page of a report I'm working on. While learning about the "perspective crop" tool in Photoshop, this happened.

The sign was obviously added by me, since this is a building where the College of Pharmacy does a lot of their work. Praise be to oblique projection!

So, I only recently discovered what the hell people are talking about whent hey say PK Rockin', lol. By the time I got to the point in the game where you get your first main PK attack, I had long forgotten about the name entry part of the game, and thought it was so cool Ness had an attack called PK SNES. It was like, yeah, he loves Super Nintendo, too! Now I know the horrible truth!

So, I've play up to the Mr. Saturn village. I really like the game so far. But I HATE the inventory system and menu interface - don't know if they could make those anymore terribad than they are now.

Resident Evil 5 says hey hey what up!

But yeah, inventory management can be a pain, especially if played as if consumable items are Too Awesome To Use If you loathe trashing items when the inventory is full a For Sale Sign could be handy. Also store things with your sis that you know you won't be using, sadly the Bike loses any real value or function early on so its a good one to store. You don't need to lug around a lot of food, there's plenty of butterflies to top your PP off when you need to heal yourself and never hold on to old weapons. Before you get a full party its very much like old DQ games where you're full of junk and you can't open a chest.

It gets to be a real pain sometimes, but really between how much money you make and the usefulness of items, its never really a problem to chuck or use items at your hearts content.

Yeah, one thing about mother 2 and 3 is to never be afraid to use items (especially 3)

In Earthbound, once you get to Saturn Valley, Jeff and Paula should be carrying all the food anyways. Ness has enough PP to heal everyone in the party by then.

Remember, Ness is more paladin then a mage, rarely use PSI Rockin, unless you're either very lazy (Large Fobby Mobs) or against the bosses.

Also, make sure to talk to all the NPCs multiple times. Their dialogue changes so often after finishing events that even on my like 6-7th playthrough I still find new dialogue. It's not really necessary to completing the game, but the NPC dialogue gives the game a lot of charm. Most of the people i know who dislike the game treat the game like it's Final Fantasy, where the NPCs are useless. Sure the NPC's here are almost always useless, but at least they're charming and awesome.

I should really do an in depth review of all the things this game does right. It's amazing how well this game is. Very similar to the Half Life series with all the attention to detail

Very good info from you guys

I've just been putting everything in storage because I don't know what's valuable and what's not. For example, I have no idea if Jeff's protractor or ruler will be necessary for story purposes or key item functionality, so I put them in storage. My bike is in storage too now. After I equip new items at the store, I just sell the old ones. And what's this For Sale Sign you speak of? I remember someone in Twoson was talking about that...

Rulers and protractors are useless. You can also buy one of them (forget which one) at the Twoson bazaar.

You need one for the monkey cave right?

And if you hate the storage system never play an old school dragon quest game which the system is based on.

The only items you have to bring into the monkey cave are a
Picnic Lunch and Skip Sandwich
- everything else can be found in the cave.

And the For Sale sign is a $100 item you can buy in the Twoson bazaar that lets you sell items as long as you're not in a cave or something.

It sometimes works in caves! Every now and then I got an angry phone call though lol.

Got a question: I want to buy this on eshop. I have no funds but when I select the purchase tab it gives me four option to add funds. Since the game costs $10.99 w/ tax, I'd have to click the $20 option but I only want to add the exact amount required for purchase. How do I do this?

Ondore

Don't go through the "Add funds" screen - try to buy it with less than the amount required and you'll have an option to "Add needed funds with credit card".

Indeed. You can always choose to "pay the remainder" and you can start from $0. Wonderful feature that should've been there with the Wii.

I don't keep funds in my eShop account (since I just don't download that many titles), so I just pay the exact amount I need to when a game comes out. I did it for all of the 30 cent titles. With tax each game came to 32 cents, and I paid that exactly because I never chose to "add funds," only to "pay the remainder."

Three points:

1) This game has over 29,000 community members on Miiverse. It's beaten SMW and could be on its way to beating Super Metroid. This is pretty decent considering that the game isn't available for upgrade or 30 cents; it's building this community as a full-priced (and higher-priced) VC title.

2) Wow, I didn't think I would notice the "new" PSI effects but I just recently tried out PK Rockin Gamma and yeah, definitely different.

3) I forgot how cool it is to immediately press B after using a "healing spot" and seeing everyone's PSI and HP roll up to max. Rolling bars are a nice touch for this game in more ways than one.

I remember seeing a bunch of folk elsewhere complaining hard about this. I haven't played much on Wii U yet but I'm gonna say I prefer it. So many times playing on SNES I had to cover my eyes because it was waaay too flashy.

Notice that this isn't "members." The number is probably for the amount of posts. Not sure whether that incldues comments on posts or just pure posts. The fact that people post a loooooot of screenshots of the funny dialog makes up for a lot of that. Though, again, it's not entirely clear what that number means. But it isn't members (=as in sales) there are posts by players and also by people who don't have the game.

How do you know for sure? You mean as in unique IDs that may or may not own the game? Does it include comments? That's what would be interesting to know.

Regardless, the size of the community is impressive no matter how you look at it.

Hm okay. This then skews the numbers to weird almost useless if it even counts Yeahs.

Yeah, it would be better if it was just for posts and comments, but it still and interesting number, as all communicities are given the same statistic. Earthbound is the biggest community in EU Miiverse by a quite large margin.

Burning Justice

It looks like the EarthBound community is shared between North America and Europe, while other VC games have separate North American and European communities. So that number is really pretty useless.

Jeff became my fav after this quote:

"I'm not very strong, really near-sighted, kind of shy, and I tend to be a little reckless. This is just the way I am... I hope you want me to be your friend..."

Played a bit in the last few days. Got demolished by the Kraken twice and then realized there was an opportunity to go back to Fourside and do the Sanctuary there (and another sanctuary after...).

Haha. Gotta love that non-linearity.

I think in past replays I've always waited to get Poo before doing Sanctuaries 5 and 6. This time I did 5 without him and 6 with him, and then proceeded to destroy the Kraken. Still, that fire-breathing move...you can never be truly prepared for it.
