Games for Windows Live shutting down July 1, 2014.

I guess it sucks for existing games that will be impacted, but it sure is nice knowing no future games will use it (Dark Souls II).

It will all be okay people. You're not going to lose access to your games.

Should have said amazon does a decent job with prices/sales. That's what people are worried about, right? Because Steam has no shortage of peripheral features.

I'm with you, but there seems to be panic setting in around here with this. Now, all of a sudden GFWL was a good thing because it presented a service competitor to Steam.

It's as if the last 5 years where no one cared about GFWL as a service, or actively detested it, never happened.

I am assuming Bamco isn't going to patch Dark Souls. Does this mean I would need to download a crack just to install the game?

EDIT: I won't be able to save!? Are you serious?

Hm?
Sounds like Dark Souls will go kaput to me, unless Namco/From pulls a miracle and updates the game, which is incredibly unlikely.

All GFWL games:
- Achievements fail
- Matchmaking fails and online features are permanently broken

GFWL games that require sign-in for initial activation:
- Permanently unplayable

GFWL games that require sign-in / user profile access for saving:
- Permanently unplayable

How much faith should I have that the PC community will solve these problems if the devs/pubs don't step up?

so it's up to companies to patch their games so that doesn't happen.

well that will kill off Dark Souls PC. hopefully folks can still play it single player

Dark Souls PC allows you to play offline so you should be safe there

at least i didn't have to deal with manual patching or the space-cluttering game-box for my Dark Souls... rental...

:(

i will throw my support so-hard behind digital platforms that provide server code and drm-free games.

HOLY SHIT. THIS IS HUGE.

Good (death of GFWL), but a lot of my library is horribly affected.
Dawn of war II and Dark Crusade are games that specifically I worry for.

Games are going to fast become "you had to be there" experiences with so much "always online" stuff creeping in.

I guess Dark Souls hacked player shit meant I wouldnt miss that online interaction, but still.

I always feared that would be the case once DLC and online only features took off this gen. I'm sad that its going to be true.

I don't think anything that was coming out was using it (might be why they're doing this) so this ends up being pretty much solely a guarantee that a number of games will never work again.

So lets see how many gamesi own that this is going to fuck me over on..

GOW
Fallout 3
Batman AA/AC
Dark Souls
Bioshock 2
Resident Evil 5
Dawn of War 2

...god fucking dammit they better make those games available offline before they shit the bed for the last time.

Right, because Namco won't want to achieve any more revenue from Dark Souls through Steam sales or any other distribution, forever.

They're happy with what they have, and are just going to put that sales forecast to "0" because GFWL is going away.

Yep, that will happen. Because Namco can't be bothered to make any more money from a game that seems to have done pretty well on PC.

Sure. It's over.

They should still be playable offline as long as you've created an offline profile, no?

at least i hope Steam does it themselves for all games on their store or else they're basically selling broken shit.

I hope everyone who had anything to do with gfwl thinks long and hard about how their stupidity will leave many games permanently unplayable.

oh wait lol games for windows store here we go

Yes.

Microsoft will probably issue one last patch before the system goes down in order to close down that authentication.

Probably might be a little far. I think I'll settle on a maybe.

I hope you're right, but I still don't really see it happening. They don't exactly seem to care about updating that game.

I'd rather eliminate the vermin but if most of the big and popular titles like SF or GTA4 get patched I would be happy. It would be terribly disappointing to have even supported it only to not want to fix it to work independent of that vermin GFWL.

well it sounds like the batman games, bioshock2, and insanely twisted will all be replacing gfwl with steamworks

if a company still makes long tail money off of their pc release it would be in their best interest to remove gfwl

Sure but even in that situation, are previous owners of non-Steam versions (retail or whatever) going to get Steam keys for their games? Or are they permanently fucked over? It's a really shitty situation that never should've happened in the first place.

What the hell!? So what's going to hapen to the GFWL version of SSFIV AE? I swear, Capcom better patch it so I can upgrade to Ultra or I'm going to flip shit.

Dark Souls on pc preformed well and 2 is Steamworks, seemingly anyway. I could see Namco patchibg it over, sure why not.

Good riddance. Really sucks about losing online functionality in my games and even some will be unplayable.

I have several GFWL games, guess I'll download, activate, crack, then back them up.

Fuck.

I'm not getting my hopes up. They released Dark Souls in such a bare-bones state for pc because they didn't have the resources to make a proper port. The game did well and earned them a profit. Now they have to go and gut the entire network infrastructure which is not trivial. In the long term it would probably pay off in spades, but let's not forget that companies are too occupied with right-now profits.

I don't think Microsoft has issued a patch for GFWL for.... ages. Saying that they will issue a patch to allow offline play on these games is a leap of faith.

Think this through... so all the companies that used GFWL for their PC products all of a sudden cannot sell another copy due to Microsoft.

Major publishers and developers we're talking about here.

You really think that those companies are going to say "Microsoft, it's cool. You don't want to disable online authentication? We'll just not sell any more PC versions of GTA or Dark Souls or Fallout 3? Okay, sure. That sounds good to us!"

Come on people, you're smarter than this.

@LiK, thanks

That just leaves the Batman SP games I have on Steam :(

Maybe those can be played offline I dunno

Arkham games and Bioshock 2 should be getting GFWL patched out

Redesigning that online system could get expensive.
