You guys are shitting too much on Phil - he's responsible for the games and seems passionate about what he does; plus he's probably in a Reggie-like situation where he has nothing to say in terms of the console's direction

I mean what else than PR bullshit can you expect from him? He's on that ship and has to sail with it

So when he's talking about having two way conversations, you're saying the conversation is MS talking and consumers replying with money and that's what Phil actually meant?

Er yeah. That's what tells multi billion dollar corporations what people actually want.

Or they could 'listen' to online petitions... you know like the one wanting MS to reintroduce the DRM.

A system for gamers? Yeah, cause a gamer's favorite thing to do is watch a game of football.
Generalisation there mate.

Oh, NOW it's a two-way conversation!

That was not the case a few months ago...

Tell you what, Microsoft. I am definitely not going to buy the XBox One for the next year or two.

Deal with it.

Yeah, handing over your $500 a year later will teach them really bad.

There is something positive to be said about how Microsoft sticks to their guns, until they actually get to play their hand. Back-Peddling before you even TRY is a pretty weak way to react to things.

One of the very reasons I like my Xbox years is because they're so forward-thinking. Playing Monster Hunter on PS2 felt very restricted, compared to the ease of playing things like DOAU and MechAssault at the time. And I loved having an "I swear it's infinite!" Harddrive in my Xbox, while I dreaded having to buy memory cards for PS2, because that was money I could well spend on games. And the push for XBLA was so much more interesting to me than lots of what was being released on PSN for a good number of years.

All those things came from going against the grain, and doing things that people would have spoken out against before. They might not have been doing exactly right from the start, but they were the catalyst to many of the changes we see all over each system's set-ups, now.

It's actually kinda fun to see Sony and Microsoft digging at each other, really. Feels like a mutation of the 16 bit days Sega / Nintendo competition.

If he's the front facing person representing the brand now that Mattrick is gone, he's going to be the scapegoat. That's how PR works really.

What problems did Sony have, other than their hardware being too expensive for the audience they wanted?

Microsoft's policies were fundamentally flawed from the very beginning, but they were just that - policies. Things that are easily changed before the product actually launches. Oh - and they still have that problem of their hardware being to expensive and that's not going away any time soon, apparently.

They had no online service.

They had no games until what MGS 4?

3rd party games were being delayed due to developers having an hard time with the hardware.

People tried to warn Sony and they did listen, but it took them far longer then MS to correct thier issues.

Customer: "Hey MS, we don't want all that DRM stuff and online requirements."

MS: "....."

Customer: "Hey MS! We don't want that shit!"

MS: "....but cloud?"

Customer: "Fuck this shit, I ain't buying your product."

MS: "Whoa whoa hold on! We'll remove it OK? See we listen to your concerns."

Customer: "...."

Looks accurate enough.

Not the high level people I don't but the other tier people yes. As much as I am a Xbox fan you have to admit its been a fractured build up to launch to say the least

Seems about right.

If Microsoft knew or cared about what gamers wanted in the first place they wouldn't have been in this situation at all.

From january when the first always on rumors started to the xbox reveal in may MS could have listened and nothing would have happend.
Instead MS decided to do their thing until preorder numbers factually showed that they were on the wrong path. It's their fault and they are reaping the rewards at the moment...

I really hate the way he uses the word "customers." Saying "our fans" or "gamers" or "gaming community" consistently would have come off better. It's like referring to people in a retail store as "customers" rather than a "guests."

Just my personal thoughts, but it bugs me.

This may come as a shock, but pre-order numbers and media backlash are forms of feedback.

Yep, quite valid forms of feedback. Even so, low pre-order numbers alone would have said little in a vacuum, and the media backlash and our own were mutually reinforcing.

Microsoft clearly did listen, because they backtracked on almost everything people were complaining about. It's always tough for a team to give up on a vision they've invested so much into, but they did a complete 180 in practically record time. That's something to be celebrated, not mocked. So I see nothing at all wrong with what Phil Spencer said.

Actually, I found Andrew House's jab sort of weak. It was more political than substantive.

Lame response, should've gone with 'Sony's momma is so fat that she can't even change her own fucking socks'. It wouldn't have made any sense, but I'd have laughed.

Half a point for the GAF shout though.

Do you like consumer better?

If Microsoft listens to their customers, then what's Windows 8 all about?

No one asked for that interface.

Or how about the fact that 360 UL is currently about 75% ad space? Did customers ask for that? Pretty sure we keep demanding more room for our actual content.

Seems like a one-way conversation to me.

Meh. He said what he had to.

Except for repeating "two way conversation". As if there's another kind ;)

Hindle, to be fair, Sony had problems because people like Phil Harrison* were out of touch, although I do understand he pushed for a lot of things that were then shot down by Japan Corporate.
Sony had internal problems. The price of the hardware, the arrogance of our favorite Japanese, asylum escapee, Ken Kutaragi and the intensely exoctic nature of the Cell Broadband Engine.

It took much of last gen to sort out these problems, but where I see these things being ironed out, and Sony prepping for their 4th successful console cycle, I see MS floundering about(Thanks, Dahlia Gillespie) and even with the billions they have invested, and being as big as they are, they have a stain on their reputation that cannot be ignored. Especially since it's engraved in the internet.

That doesn't mean I'll forget paying 700 bucks for what could be one of the most expensive console launches ever, either.

I'mt appering, so I'll just cut it there.

Seems like a one-way conversation to me.

If Henry Ford asked people what they wanted before the automobile, they would have said they wanted faster horses.

BTW.. Windows 8 on a tablet is fantastic, as is the Metro interface on the Windows Phone. Sure, it's a terrible desktop interface, but it also boots up faster than 7 and is otherwise pretty solid.

RETAIL: God, the XBone pre-orders are horrible. PS4 is beating you clearly. You have to do something.

MEDIA: Xbox policies are horrible. Gamers don't want it. Veterans/Army not able to play the Xbox One due to the 24h check-in! Bad PR! MS not supporting the troops!

MS: "Whoa whoa hold on! We'll remove it OK? See we listen to your concerns."

Customer: lol fu!

Fixed for you!

I think you misinterpreted my input as a shot at M$. It wasn't meant to be. Just a general pet peeve of mine.

This was a different sony back then, with a completely different structure, vision, a different CEO who had a different view on things. Today you are looking at a focussed, efficient and in-touch Sony, and it's up to Microsoft to follow suit, or send their suits packing. Microsoft is paying the price for shit management and a shit vision. They are correcting as much flaws as time allows, as the launches draw near. Not because of the feedback from their customers, but because of feedback from the financial departments. Microsoft is getting hammered at retail, and Phil needs to acknowledge the mistakes made in the most humble ways, and reassure the public that Microsoft understand why things went tits up, and has adjust their vision accordingly and with great focus. Beating around the push with PR fluff is not going to save face. It's going to rile the vocal crowds up, and the backlash will bury any goodwill you had with that statement.

Man the fuck up Microsoft, take responsibility and show us that you have learned from this.

Phil Spencer is one of the few at Xbox that doesn't warrant criticism.

If you're going to blame someone for the state of the Xbox One, blame those in charge of the Console's development.
