Nintendo Announces Nintendo 2DS

I think I may need help. The more I think about this thing the more I want it. It's so dumb it's awesome. I really want to know what it feels like in-hand.

I think it's a great idea but ugly as hell. And perhaps more importantly, it doesn't look very comfortable to hold.

Maybe this design is hinting towards the next Nintendo handheld: a larger tablet like handheld with one unified screen that can simulate a dual screen experience for backwards compatibility without a 3d display.

In testing the hardware, I found the 2D to be considerably lighter than the 3DS. It also feels more durable; it consists of a thicker, more rugged plastic than the slick, thin shell of the 3DS, and the lack of a hinge helps make it feel more solid as well. The control layout feels considerably more comfortable than that of the 3DS, with interface elements high on the face (similar to the GamePad). This benefits the D-pad in particular. Perceptually, I found the screens seemed larger than those of the standard 3DS model despite their being the same size.

People should be praising this move just for the meme/gifs it has already given us.

The 3DS is nowhere near as successful as the DS. In Japan, the 3DS is performing much better. Hence, the 2DS is only being released in Nintendo's international markets.

Also, going by your notion, wasn't the 3DS a stupid name? Yet you still say it was "successful". If this is just a repeat with a stupid name but with a low price entry point, isn't that a good thing?

3DS showcases it's a step up from the DS and that it also utilizes 3D gameplay. 2DS is as redundant as the OG DS.

Unfortunately, I don't see this being that much better of a hit compared to the 3DS. It's just Nintendo being desperate.

I get the idea behind it. I really do. A smart move really for Pokemon and the Holidays.

... but that is the most godawful looking system I've ever seen.

No game needs 3D and no game ever did need 3D. It was always just a graphical... flourish.

There are plenty of games that have been ported to and from 3DS, and they've lost nothing in the transition to 3D or back to 2D. From Street Fighter IV to Mutant Mudds.

This really doesn't change anything. This is just a new model of the 3DS that has the slider turned down, meant to hit a budget price.

Mario 3D Land was way better with the 3D slider turned on. I usually leave it turned off but in that case it really added to the experience in a meaningful way.
Landing jumps between floating platforms was much easier when you actually had a sense of depth.

LOL

Did the already successful 3DS really need an overhaul to just confuse the market for the attempt for extra sales at a lower pricepoint? As most people said, this renders the OG 3DS useless. And what the fuck at the console name, couldn't they just call it the 3DS Lite?

This. They could of reduced the price and advertised to customers that 3D can be TURNED OFF IN THE FUCKING SETTINGS.

The name is ridiculous and it's going to piss of consumers when they think the 3DS came after the 2DS. It's stupid and it seems rushed like hell.

I cannot wait to see future game boxes now. What's the spine gonna say? 3DS/2DS?
They've missed a great opportunity here.

It's stupid because the OG 3DS is here for what the new one sets out to do. Absolutely daft.

The success of others absolutely infuriates me.

I imagine "3DS Lite" is reserved for the 3DS's immediate successor. This 2DS seems tuned to the tablet/phone market and young children and is a clear offshoot.

The thing looks awful, but looks don't matter when you're going to become a dedicated Pokemon machine that fits nicely in your hands.

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
I thought this was a joke when I saw it first on IGN this morning
This is the ugliest thing I have seen since "Virtual Boy". Funny, it's the same 2 colors as well....

I played it in 3D, but when difficult sections arose, I still used the shadow on the ground as the ultimate tool for 3D platforming.

Suddenly I can't help imagining 2DS, visually, is Nintendo's response to all those people who kept saying they wouldn't buy a 3DS XL in red or blue because just the color was too kiddy.

*Iwata holds up 2DS* "Please understand. And fuck you too buddy!"

There is a lot wrong with this post. Let's start from the beginning.

The 3DS is not a success in comparison to the DS. This design allows them to strip features which will allow them to reach a lower price point easier and while still generating a profit for the company. Lower price point gets this into DS Lite price territory, which will stir more sales.

There may be slight confusion, but hopefully informed sales folks and good marketing can help with that.

This does not render the OG 3DS useless, as it is still the cheapest entry unit if you want 3D.

And 3DS Lite makes a lot less sense than 2DS, since this system offers no 3D functionality for games.

Whatever then, they could have called it 3DS followed by any inane suffix and it still would have been better than the 2DS. I'm still cringing at the name.

It doesn't have 3D so...

I really think playing Mutant Mudds on 3DS and other platform to be different.

You know what I just realized. A bunch of parents going into Walmart asking "Do you sell 2ds games? All I see is 3ds games"
lol, its the DS/3DS scenario all over again.

That's just brillant. I've been waiting for years for a DS model that doesn't play old games, has no 3D effect slider and doesn't fit into my pockets. Now I can finally not carry it around with me when I go out.

Paraphrasing the launch video: "A new handheld the world has never seen before. play all your favorite 3DS games in 2D!!!"

Nintendo Red and Black budget hardware, yeah I am seeing a trend here.

Why is it not one single big screen.

The Nintendo 2SS ?
